Port Hope Keeps Licence Office The Ministry of Transportation and Communications crumbled under public pressure and has allowed the motor vehicle and driver's licensing office to be reestablished reestablished in Port Hope. The Cobourg bureau was to take over Port Hope business when it closed last week. Just as Port Hope was gearing up for a fight, the Ministry retracted it's decision and decided to keep the office running. Victoria College Finally Sold In keeping with government guidelines to preserve the college's architectural significance and create new housing, Cobourg's Victoria College is being developed into an 85-unit retirement community. Watchfree Construction purchased purchased the lands for $530,000 dollars and plan to construct an $8 million dollar complex including restoration restoration and new construction. Curbside Blues Are Picked up The West Northumberland Recycling Group has suggested commencing a Port Hope, Cobourg and Hamilton Township weekly, blue box curbside pick-up. The blue boxes, in whitih bottles , cans and newspapers are put for recycling, will be given to all the homes in the area. The sale of. the material is eventually hopfed to bring bring a profit for the Recycling Group, and reduce the quantity sent to landfill sites. Former Co-ordinRtof Of Women's Shelter Blames Board Ann Jackson, co-ordinator at the Our House Shelter in Cobourg says the Board's behavior undermined her leadership" and ruined morale among her staff, causing 6 * of the 7 shelter counsellors to resign 2 weeks after Jackson's resignation. The council claimed, after dashes with Jackson over membership expansion, expansion, they could no longer work with her, and issued a number of complaints about jter performance. ' ■ : V- Hoiheowners Join Ranks in Bid to Stop Subdivision Stop Subdivision Protests were heard from homeowners at Newcastle's council meeting Monday, against a proposed proposed 160-unit subdivision at Townline road south and Bloor Street. Residents raised concerns over lower property values, inadequate school facilities, and increased traffic traffic on the 401 interchange at Har- - mony road. Further meetings are being arranged for the future. A place for Port Hope to stretch out Hope Township and Port Hope are in discussions which could result in the Town of Port Hope taking over a portion of 'Hope Township for needed expansion. Talks have been underway for the past two years to clear away paper work. How long the discussions will continue is not known. Canton Dream Estate looking for new owners Batterwood House, once the estate of a governer general is again up for sale. The owners David and Nancy Hadden who have owned the estate for the past fifteen years are moving 1 ' to Vancouver Island. The Haddens during their tenure of the property had intended to build a guest house on the property where members of the Baha'i faith could spend a week or two. Welfare rise concerns social services head Welfare statistics have started climbing, and are well over 1986 levels, the money paid out in welfare this year could be over the amount budgeted. People are coming to Durham because of the building boom, but fewer unskilled jobs are available than expected, leaving many jobless and seeking welfare. Town refuses to maintain river lands Port Hope has refused a request from the Ganaraska Region Conservation Conservation Authority that the Town maintain lands along the Ganaraska within Port Hope that is held under the Ganaraska ownership.
