This is a cosmopolitan plant you are dealing with. Although it probably arrived here from Europe, it is also native to Asia and northwest Africa. ' Its common name comes from the French, dent de lion, a reference to its toothed leaves and also to its long tap root which, when cleaned, - is very white like a lion's tooth. Only recently, sacrificed to our passion for uninterrupted stretches of green, has the dandelion been classified as a noxious weed. Under its common name, dandelion, and its vulgar name, piss-a-beds, it appears appears in Culpepper's "Complete Herbal" which was published in 1653. The vulgar name refers to the plant's efficacy as a -diuretic. Culpepper also mentions that it , grows everywhere and flowers in one place or another almost all year long; Any gardener will recognize that it's habits haven't changed. After carefully removing all dandelions from the lawn, we are likely to find a healthy specimen pushing through a crack in the asphalt driveway. And even in our climate, a dandelion may bloom in a sheltered spot in early March, and the last, jaunty bloom persists until there is a severe frost. A plant this hardy should surely be put to uSe. Culpepper highly recommends a decoction of the root or leaves in white wine for healing and cleansing the urinary tract. The broth he also advises to combat high fevers and as a healer of open sores. He concludes, "Great are the virtues of this common herb, and that is the reason the French and Dutch so often eat them in spring." If he'd known above vitamins, Culpepper would certainly have added added that the greens contain twenty- five times more Vitamin A than tomato juice and fifty times more GROW FOR IT, $$$ Raise baitworms at home. A weed is commonly described as any plant which grows where it is not wanted. It is also difficult to get rid of, like a tedious visitor who comes when we are rushing to go out and seems impervious to our lack of cordiality and constant consultation consultation of our watch. Like the visitor the dandelion is a sticker. It is a perennial with a sturdy tap root. Unless the whole root is dug up it will shortly send up new growth from the stub. It is also a member of the composite family with a flower which is really made up of many small flowers, each producing a seed with its own parachute. Thus equipped for survival, dandelions raise their tousled golden heads in spite of frantic spraying and industrious hand- weeding. You may feel yourself becoming obsessed by them. If you, spend a lot of time on all fours searching searching for those telltale rosettes of serrated leaves, then you are in trouble. If you catch yourself doing this, rush out and buy a copy of "The Edible Wild". Begin immediately to cut the young dandelion greens for salads. You may wish to experiment with recipes for creamed dandelion leaves, leaves with toasted sesame seeds or leaves in batter. You will feel purposeful in your attempts to dig up the roots because you will dry them and grind them as a coffee substitute. Finally you will rejoice in the appearance of the golden heads, which you will employ the whole family to collect so that you may brew a mellow wine, to sip on cold January nights when spring seems impossible to remember. Then the dandelion will become a mystical plant, storer of sunlight and warmth. Marg Wilbur explaining NDP stand on auto insurance . People in such diverse communities as Port Perry, Burketon Falls, Enniskillen, Newcastle, and Courtice are very upset about high auto insurance rates. Many people feel that their rates are increasing without justification. Mârg has been informing the homeowners about the benefits of the British Columbia and Manitoba Auto Insurance Plans. She has found people to be very receptive to a similar plan in Ontario. In talking with voters, Marg has been faced with many situations of unfair gouging on the part of the auto insurance industry. A retired gentleman with a history of no accidents accidents in Wilmot Creek showed an increase of $200 to $600 in his rate over a period of three years. A woman in Brooklin with a son under 25 years old, also with no accidents, accidents, pays over $2000.00. A resident'of Newcastle, recently from B.C., was shocked at the high rates in Ontario. Marg has promised to fight for a fairer system of Auto Insurance. The response to her survey in local newspapers has been positive and Marg is determined to keep working on this issue/ Orono Weekly Times, Wednesday, July 15, 1987-9 Seek $2 Million for UNICEF projects A new year of fundraising has begun for the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) and the organization is calling on support from Ontario residents.
