4-Orono Weekly Times, Wednesday, July IS, 1987 Orono PeeWee Soccer team improving As I reported two weeks ago me Orono Peewee Soccer team had opened the season on a dismal note. However the team has shown marked marked improvement in it's last two encounters. encounters. On July 2nd Orono journeyed to Courtice to meet the Bowman ville Rowdies. Despite having having only nine players our team tied 2-2 with goals going to Jim Partner and Dustin Reid. Richard Vernon was particularly effective on defense with some hard tackling and the rest of the players stood up to the challenges. Jim Partner came close several times and missed potting potting the winner due to some bad luck. "Hard lines", Jim! On July 9th Hampton visited Orono and came out on the short end of a 4-3 score. Scott McAllister scored two with Jim Partner and garnie Ball notching singles. Jamie 1 played one of his best games of the year and his solo effort to open the second half was particularly dazzling. dazzling. Orono grabbed a 4-0 lead but was hard pressed to maintain it by the industrious Hampton squad. Only the fine play of goalkeeper Carl Brown and the outstanding defensive efforts of Kevin Scott, Craig Nemis, : Scott McKenzie, Shellie Nowak, and Dustin Reid preserved the victory. In one -dramatic instance Craig had control of the ball and was looking into an empty net. Fortunately, he booted the ball to one side because the net was his own and Carl had committed committed himself on an earlier shot. This presence of mind was typical of the defense throughout the game. The team should be proud of these two fine efforts and with similar play in the future should be just as successful.
