The complaint about the Mulroney correspondence correspondence was lodged with the Ottawa . Citizen's popular columnist, Dave Brown, by two people who were apparently among the Tory faithful at the time of the landslide in the „ Fall of '84. In November of 1985, our two Tories were rewarded with an invitation to wine and cheese at the official residence, 24 Sussex Drive. They managed to persuade the PMO's official photographer to take a picture of them with Mr. Mulroney. And 14 months ago they sent a blow-up of that same picture to Mr. Mulroney's office with the request that he autograph it for them. They've had no response. Sbmeone who has been making repeated inquiries about the photograph was told recently that if the people in question were in such a tearing hurry, the unsigned photo would be returned immediately. immediately. I suppose they complained to Dave Brown and recounted all these details'because they wanted to hurt Mr. Mulroney, or at least Mr. Mulroney's staff, for ignoring them. And 1 suppose the story will do the PM some damage among people who feel that the gossip about his Gucci's is reason enough "for voting against him, or who see evidence of presidential aspirations in the size of his hotel bills and his use of government aircraft. But I live in high hopes that most people, whether they vote for Mr. Mulroney the next time or not, will judge him on something other than the way he handles his mail or the speed with which he signs things. ' There are twenty-five million of us, and although he has-a good deal of help in the office, he is the one and only Brian Mulroney autograph machine. If I didn't know something about human nature, I'd be tempted to think that two loyal Tories'would be the last people to bug him for his signature. But they're probably the worst,.because they figure he owes it to them, and I suppose that next time out, they'll vote for John Turner. As far as I'm concerned, this simply adds to the continuing eonundhim about why anyone , would want to be Primé Minister in T the first place. everyone wants to eat outside (with -the minimum of fuss and preparation!).
