Blue boxes for Cobourg recycling Northumberland Recycling, a private venture, in Cobourg, in cooperation cooperation with the province, municipalities and the Ontario Multi Material Recycling are about to provide blue boxes to a possible five municipalities in Northumberland Northumberland County. - . Cobourg has already put its money upfront and'will be the first to receive the boxes. They are being distributed free of charge to residents agreeing to participate in separating glass, tin cans and paper from their garbage. Sports Centre host to Ball Hockey tournament The Darlington Sports Centre is to be the site of thé 1987 Ontario "A" division Ball Hockey championships championships to be held August 28-30. Twelve teams are to compete from all across Ontario. The Darlington Ball Hockey league plays on Tuesday and sun- day nights' at the Sports Centre. Twti Olympic Torch runners from Port Hope Ten-year-old Mikal Hiscock and 29-year T old Anne Floyd have been chosen to" take part in the Olympic Torch carry which passes through Port Hope as the torch moves from Colborne to Omemee. ' Mill demolition, to cost $25,000 Central Lake Ontario Conservation Conservation Authority wants to demolish the old Hampton Mill before further further disrepair occurs. The Authority is asking the Town of Newcastle to split in the ■estimated cost of $25,000. By refurbishing the 30 year old building the company is able to offer offer reasonable rents of $3.25 per square foot. $1 million to relocate Port Perry fair Scugog Township has stepped aside of any further attempt to relocate the Port Perry Fair grounds across the road so that the present location could be used for a needed new public school. Negotiations have been ongoing for the past 18 months with the fair board that holds a lease for $1 a year up to 1995. With a $1 million price tag in relocating the fair to a new premise the Township council has stepped ' out of any further negotiations. The Durham School Board has begun expropriation proceedings to obtain the present fair property for school purposes. Dog's throat slashed A-dog owned by a rural Bowman- ville resident, John Dejager, was found dead recently still chained to its kennel. Its throat was slashed in two places. A second dog was unharmed. Police are investigating. Male volunteers wanted Durham Region Multiple Sclerosis Society is looking for male volunteers 18 years and older for its programs throughout the Region. Males are particularly wanted to work with male victims' of the disease. Other volunteers are also wanted such as for office typing. Small surplus may exist for Durham Region Predictions by the finance cbm- missioner for the Region of Durham now feels that the Region could end the year at a tireak-even point or with a small sufplus. Water is expected to show' a surplus of $300,000 while sewers could show a surplus of $500,000. Other departments are expecting to run as according to their budgets. Union to go ahead with charges against police Union leaders at the strike-bound Tarxien Co. Ltd. plant in Ajax have said they have identified six Durham Regional Police officers involved in picket-line clashes and - will file charges against the six with a justice of the peace. 12 applications for new vehicle licence office The Ministry of Transportation and Communication has received 12 applications from persons seeking seeking to operate a vehicle licence office office in Port Hope, The Ministry closed such an office office in the Town in June but consideration consideration is being made to re-open the office. * No final decision as to operator or location has been made. Shakeup at Eldorado Faced with world-wide" competition competition Eldorado Resources has fired .nine managers at the Port, Hope refinery and has cut, managerial staff to four. Three replacements come from the Crown Corporation's Ottawa office while one from the Port Hope plant. The shakeup originated in Ot- ■ tawa. Alderville woman chief of Ojihway band V Because of her leadership role in the community Nora Bothwell was chosen last week chief of the Alder- ville' Ojibway band. The band is celebrating its sesquicentennial this year. Bothwell has been instrumental in setting up the Alderville Trading Post through which the band has learned a lot about its cultural crafts. The 36-year-old single mother of two children is a graduate of Trent University with a BA degree in native studies. Bothwell said she has a wonderful wonderful council with Penny Crow and Glen Marsden. Bothwell said housing and communication communication needs attention. Golden Plough difficulties continue Northumberland County Warden Rosemarie Robins was within her rights to accept the resignation of Golden Plough Lodge Administrator, Administrator, Helen Chalmers, says Rick Baldwin a lawyer brought in by Robins to handle questions about the resignation. Now an outside consultant is being being employed by council to select a replacement for Helen Chalmers at a cost of $10,000. "We're basically saying we have no expertise to hire somebody."
