4-Oroho Weekly Times, Wednesday, July 29, 1987 Tamblyn Family Picnic Despite the hot sultry weather, Saturday June 11th saw the Wedding announcement Tamblyn 'Cozens by the dozens' gathering at Orono Park for the annual annual family reunion, an occasion for remeniscences, good food and fqn and carrying opt the Hawaiian theme of the picnic. - All were welcomed by members of the executive and each was given a lei in a colour matching his or her costume. Soon all were renewing acquaintances and welcoming new additions. Following singing of Grace all did justice to the traditional Tamblyn Family picnic buffet. President Garnet Towns called for a minute's silence in memory of four cousins who had passed away during the year,, namely, Gladys Lamb, Marion Brown, Wilfrid Bowman and Russell Armiston. Greetings were brought from Glenn and Lillian Tamblyn of Victoria B.C, Past President Bill Tamblyn presided presided for election of the following slate of officers: Past Pres. Garnet and Berniece Towns, Peterborough, President Ross and Jean Ashton, Haydon, Vice-Pres. Alyward and Dorothy Little, Thornhill, sports convenor Wayne and Marilyn Coons, Schomberg, Sec. treas. Mark and Darlene Tamblyn, Pickering. Hilda Tamblyn gave a brief but excellent talk on the importance importance of searching our ancestry, keeping memorabilia and even more importantly getting our children interested. Hilda had an excellent display of interest to all on family history- Mark and Darlene conducted some surprising and humourous contests for adults with appropriate prizes. Bob and Karen Tamblyn and three wee daughters from Spirit River, Alta., came the farthest and received a tape measure to determine determine the mileage %ack home. Much fun was created by the Hawaiian costume and dance compedtions. Jill Brown with her grass skirt and Alyward Little with his multicoloured multicoloured shirt were first prize winners. winners. Jill and Franklin Tamblyn were voted most accomplished hula dancers and are no doubt enjoying their prizes of fresh pineapple. Shir- ly Brown played appropriate accompaniment accompaniment on her electric organ. Marilyn Coons conducted sports for the children. Some of the prize winners were Jeremy Coons, Sarah Tafford, Sarah McDougal, Jill Brown, Chris Tamblyn, Tyler and Michael Daniel, Lloyd Robin and Jessica Atcheson. President Garnet thanked all especially Phyllis and Art Dalberth from Rochester who kept up their tradition of supplying barbecued 'White Hots' for all. He also expressed expressed the appreciation of all to the Brown Trio, Shirley, Jill and Gerald with organ, baritone and trumpet and to Gladys Brown for her usual treat of organ music. AU too soon a most enjoyable picnic was over and farewells were mingled with "See you next year". Final architectural draft for arena approved The final architectual draft of the Bowmanville Arena was presented to Council and the draft, which remains similar to the earlier plans, was received and approved by council. The only problem that arose was tendering this major project. Don Clarke, a representative from Phillip BarratL Kaiser explained explained the Durham Region construction agency had suggested four companies companies and three more contacted the firm with an interest-in bidding on the project. He emphasized that within ten days one of the seven companies would be chosen and that limiting the number of possible bidders meant less time spent on selection, and a better response in bidding because the chance of getting the job is greater. Councillor Hamre picked up on the flaws in this method immediately. immediately. She reminded Council that "we've already experienced pubjic flack for restricted bidding once before." She assured the Kaiser representative representative that Council did not want to prolong the project, "but we don't want to see council set up for a barbecue either." She.maintained that selective bidding would cause problems for council. The council was badly criticizçcl in it's tendering of i the administrative administrative building for using selected listing. ■ Council was -,in agreement with Councillor JHamre and advised the firm to-go through the Town's usual procedure for calling public tenders.
