Orono Weekly From Around the Region Port Hope tardy in ining Enercan deal Port Hope has resisted joining in the Enercan deal in which energy is to be developed from the burning of garbage. Cobourg, Millbrook and the Townships of Cavan, Hopë, Haldimand and Hamilton have signed to provide garbage to Enercan Enercan over a twenty year period. Roger Wilson, reeve of Hope and one who has been instrumental in keeping garbage to energy current in Northumberland County states that an interest has been shown from Newcastle, Colborne, Peterborough Peterborough County and Cramahe Townships. He further states that there is enough interest now to proceed to the next step even without Port Hope but , would like to see the town included. Family Coalition Party enters Oshawa race A new provincial political party which is less than two months old is entering a candidate in the upcoming upcoming provincial election for the Oshawa riding. Forty-four year old James Delaney of Oshawa will represent the party. Delaney is a teacher with the Durham Separate School Board. The party takes a strong stand against abortions but Delaney has stated there are other issues. Sluggish July for GM Canada Sluggish summer car sales for domestic automakers are being reported for the month of July in comparison with that of a year earlier for the same month. GM in July 1987 sold a total of 39,190 cars and trucks compared with 56,121 in the same month in 1986. Car sales dropped 28.9 percent percent while truck sales droppêd 29.5 percent. Car sales are down 10.2 percent for the first seven months. Petticoat Creek day camp provides a outing %, A day camp operated for jpatients of the Whitby Psychiatric Hospital has been operating on a weekly basis running Tuesdays through Thursday. It has allowed patiepts to get out in the open and play games of a physical and passive nature. The day camp is actually a holiday for the patients. 4500 blue boxes for , Cobourg residents Some 4500 blue boxes have how. been distributed to residents of Cobourg enabling the residents to take part in a recycling program. The blue boxes for paper, cans and glass will be picked up on the same# day as regular garbage pickup. Radioactive soil exposed by rain Recent rains have cut a gulley through part of a road extension in Port Hope exposing some of the most radioactive soil in the town. the dirt road, closed to traffic, is built on radium-tainted soil. The head of the Low Level Radioactive Waste Management Office "states the washout is not a serious problem but does say that the site is one of the most contaminated contaminated in the Town. The office said there is nothing they can do without the cooperation cooperation of local citizens and council and that some form of stabilization should be undertaken. Hope to sell 60,000 bricks at $5.00 each Fund raising organizers for the new Northumberland County Children's aid office in Cobourg are ready to go with the sale of 60,000 bricks at $5.00 each. The group has a target of $300,000, all of which will be used to meet costs of the new $1.5 million Family and Children's Services Services building. The province has committed $900,000 to the project. Radio control drivers open Cobourg Track 'With the blessing of Cobourg council the Coverdale Racetrack has been opened by a newly formed Radio Control Drivers' Club of Northumberland. The club has a membership of fourteen and has completed at a Cobourg Park the second largest track for radio controlled controlled model cars in Ontario. It all happened within a two month period from the time the club approached toW n council. A Bowmanville C lub assisted in the official opening of the track. Neighbours complain of park noise Neighbours of the Radio Park in Oshawa are complaining of noise created at night ball games and have signed a petition asking that City council take some action to correct the situation which also causes parking problems. An Oshawa Alderman also states that there is a lot of drinking down at the park at the activities. $1 million loan for Westcan move to Cobourg The province of Ontario will provide provide a $1 million load guarantee to Westcan Electrical Manufatcuring Inc. to help the company establish a new plant in Cobourg. Westcan will create 250 jobs in the area when it begins operation this fall in the former United Tire plant. The Mississauga-based firm will spend $9 million to set-up for the manufacture of fluorescent light ballast manufacturing. Big Sisters in need of volunteers The Big Sisters Agency and newly created Little Buddy Program are both in need of volunteers and financial donations to meet the ever increasing needs of children in the area. • Young girls (7-17) need a special friend and little boys need a positive female influence. Both can be provided provided if women volunteer their time, simply 3-4 hours a week. The new "Little Buddies Program" Program" will begin this September as Future of church building The Wesleyville United Church building located 'in the center of Wesleyville continues to be an item of discussion. The church which was closed some twenty years ago still has its future in doubt. A few want the building preserved while a majority, apparently, would have the building demolished as it continues to deteriorate through the lack of any type of maintenance and use.
