Rose Gerald Robinson Large crowd attends Orono Tractor pull Somewhere between 1200 and 1400 spectators attended the annual Tractor Pull held at the Orono Fair Grounds Monday afternoon. A full card of pulls were presented for the occasion being sponsored by the Central Ontario Tractor Pullers' Association. Modified Tractors, Modified 2-wheel and Stock 4-wheel drive trucks along with Modified Mini Tractors were features of the pull lasting from one t<|) four-thirty in the afternoon. The Canadian Warrior, owned by Connie and Arrjold Coburn of Toronto was present for the Orono pulls. The Warrior competes most successfully across Canada and the United States. Local participants were evident in the events as well as participants from Toronto and Wasaga Bèach. The special clay track at the Orono Fair Grounds was in excellent excellent condition for the pull and competitors were well pleased with this 'feature of the event. Attendance was possibly one of the better^for this annual event in the village. Durham Dairy Princess was in finals The 32nd Ontario Dairy Princess was crowned last Wednesday, September 2nd on Agriculture Day at the Canadian National Exhibition Exhibition in Toronto. Winner of the annual contest was Andrea Lange of Simcoe County. Other contestants who had made it to this the final level in the competition competition were Kim Partridge of Perth County, Elaine Barkey, from our own Durham County, Maribeth Burkitt from Hastings and Angela Nethery of Huron. The 1987-88 Ontario Dairy Princess will conduct public relations relations activities on behalf of Ontario's Ontario's dairy farmers during her twelve month reign. The contestants contestants were judged on their public speaking ability, knowledge of the dairy industry, maturity, personality personality and poise. Some of the prizes which Andrea won were a trip'to Great Britain, a dairy calf and a silver tea service. Polls open from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. SAM CUREATZ Progressive Conservative DIANE HAMRE Liberal MARG WILBUR New Democrat According to Helen MacDonald, a member of the Citizens, for a Safe Environment, Town of Newcastle Group, it was just over a year ago that Eldorado Nuclear of Port Hope made its announcement that two sites had been selected for com sidération for a low-level waste disposal àrea: The company had selected a site north of Newtonville, another in the Tyrone area and also for consideration was a site at the Welcome radioactive waste dump. The announcement awoke the area from a dreamy summer rest period resulting in the area quickly organizing t.o object to the proposal arid with the' final defeat of any consideration of the proposal. As a result of the demise of the proposal the Federal Government has set forth a Site Selection Committee Committee who have furnished an interim interim report with a 'final draft to be presented within a week or two. Helen MacDonald states the Site Selection Committee has meet with individual concerned groups and elected parties when the Interim report was discussed. The committee committee met with the Town of Newcastle Group, which is headed by Terry Hutchison of Tyrone, in June. MacDonald said the report seemed seemed too good to be true and that the Site Committee is hopeful in enticing enticing some municipality to agree to a waste management site within their municipality. She said they feel there will be a stampede. As to the final draft a mailing is" to go out to all municipalities in the province outlining the offer and opportunities opportunities being offered. It is expected the host community will then negotiate with the government government for the location of a low-level waste site in their municipality. Motorcyclist hospitalized following Orono accident An accident in "Orono on Saturday Saturday afternoon at the intersefction of Dixon Street and Mill Street has hospitalized Jamie, Lunny of Main Street who at the tiriie of the accident accident was driving a motorcycle. The accident happenèd at 3:30 in the afternoon when Elaine Mercer of Church Street, Orono was proceeding proceeding south on Mill Street and Jamie Lunny with his 85 Honda motorcycle was proceeding north on Mill Street. According to Durham Regional Police Elaine Mercer was making a left hand turn onto Dixon when the accident oc- cured. Jamie Lunny was rushed to Memorial Hospital in Bowman ville and later taken to Oshawa General Hospital where on Monday he was in satisfactory condition. The motorcycle was a complete right off with the police estimating $3500,00 damage to the Mercer vehicle. Happenings. C.L.O.C.A. The competition will feature five Rock Bands iji competition, two from the local area. The feature gefs underway at 8:30 on Saturday evening following the Walters Family musical prdgram in front of the grandstand. TOWN COUNCIL RESUMES SESSIONS « After a month recess the Newcastle Tqwn Council and General Purpose Committee resume their regular weekly sessions.
