From Around the Region Port Boss Says Osfaawa Should Take Over Marsh Dr. Peter Zakarow chairman of the Oshawa Port authority wants the Oshawa Harbor Commission to give the marsh back to 'the city as a natural reserve. Council had deeded it and other waterfront property to the port 20 years ago for industrial development and harbor expansion. A study completed last December recommended that the Harbor com- , mission spend $500,000 to turn the marsh into a supervised education ' and recreation area. Zakarow said that "We're not in the recreation business, the city is and we don't have the money." Port Commissioner Jack Sned- den said he was surprised by the chairman's move, and that it was ir- * responsible to spring it on the com- missibn. He complained that port hasn't yet dealt with the 10 month old management study. Roads Row In Newcastle In Bowmanville, a co'uncil decision decision to allow rural roads in an ur-> ban industrial park doesn't make up a bonus to the developer states, councillor Diane Hamre. Mayor John Winters warned that a motion to allow roads to be built to rural'standards in the Bowmanville Bowmanville area would be a violation of the Municipal Act. Agreeing with Hamre was councillor councillor Marie Hubbard- that thp decision decision would help bring more industry industry to Bowmanville. Only one councillor" Ann Cowman voted against the decision to allow In- ducon to build raised roads with natural drainage ditches instead of roads with gutters and storm sewers. Quality Worries Herrema Regional chairman, Gary Herema, told the Regional Planning Planning Committee on Oct. 13th that he was concerned that local municipalities are going for quantify quantify instead of quality when it comes ,o new development. & District He commented on the 51 percent increase in building permits issued in the first sevens months of this year to a total of $581.2 million. He added that houses were being built in areas without thought as to the looks of the homes or subdivisions. Marie Hubbard, planning chairman, chairman, said that the problem in the municipality of Newcastle is the lack of staff for site plan control and building inspections, "if the problem, is not tackled, it'll be tomorrow's ghetto,-" she said. Submits Wishlist of 1988 Requests The Ganaraska Region Conservation Conservation Authority submitted it's bare bone financial requests for the 1988 year to the Ministry of Natural Resources. It included a 2 percent increase in salaries and operations from $ 160,628. to $ 163,992. A .11 percent decrease in water and 'related management, operations will drop to $358,340. from $358,741. in 1987. The G.R.C.A. asked for a 28 percent increase in conservation and recreation programs programs from $18,768. to $23,761. because of proposed trail signage and a public information program. Township Told Sales Slow For Project , * Hamilton Township's plan to turn a gravelpit into a subdivision has attracted investment interest, but was told that sales of the 18 estate residential lots have been very slow. Hamilton unveiled the Majestic Hills Estate project a month ago, to develop municipal .revenue for the township. ' The township originally purchased purchased thé 50 acre gravel pit in 1977 for $47,500. located 10 miles north of Cobourg. ,, The 15 remaining 2 acre lois are being put on the auction block between between "$30,000. and $45,(XX). price range, a remaining lot of 10.6 acres with a laege pond, will sell for about $60,000, Hamilton township has-estimated the cost of developing .Majestic Heights, north of Cobourg ' at $130,000. a small amount to put out for more than $800,000. expected in sales revenues. The property will soon be listed with all area real estate agents. Old Mill At Hampton Demolished The old grist mill in the centre of Hampton has been demolished at a cost of $19,600. The cost of the demolition has' been shared by the Town of Newcastle and the Central Lake Conservation Authority. Arnot Wotten Named To SWEAP Newcastle councillor Arnot Wot-; ten has been appointed to represent the Town on the Metropoliton Toronto's Solid Waste Environmental Environmental Assessment Plan. Toronto and Durham Region politicians are represented on the committee to come up with a plan for waste management for the future. Port Hope fair $3,500.00 short With gate receipts dropping to $11,000 in 1987 from $21,000 in 1976 the Port Hope Fair is facing a $3,000 to $3,500 deficit on the operation of their annual fair. Poor weather greeted the fair on its three days of operation this year. However the poor weather cancelled only one event at the fair. Last year the fair had a surplus of $2,000. Consideration is being given to make application under their rain insurance which it is considered would provide $1,000 which could be applied to the 1987 deficit. Mixed views over , free trade deal Eldorado Resources Ltd., Port Hope, is up for the challenge to meet U. $. competition which would come about in a free trade deal. An official said Eldorado would have to hustle and outproduce the American competition. A federal policy has been removed removed which has favoured the Port Hope firm in processing contracts. A small industry representative in the Port Hope-Cobourg area said they have more to gain than lose in the deal. He did say that Ontario would be the hardest hit over free trade. The recent trade deal worries dairy farmer Jim Tunney who also is a director on the Ontario Milk Marketing Board. He said that terms are still sketchy but notes that milk surpluses in the U.S. amount to a greater volume than does all the production in Canada. A director of the Ontario Pork Producer's marketing Board has said that the majority of pork producers producers are so far pleased with the deal but again the final draft has yet to be seen. Curtis Chicks in Port Hope who this year will supply 15 million day- old chicks to Ontario poultrymen say they will be relatively unaffected. unaffected. Recommended agreement be signed-recycling The Public Works committee of the Region of Durham has recommended recommended thàt the region sign an agreement with Durham Recycling Centre to collect, process and market recyclable waste.
