This compares with 70 this year for the nine month period. The senior veterinary consultant for the provincial ministry of health is disturbed that in fact the Durham Region remains one of the only areas in southern Ontario which does not enforce tough ministry guidelines against those who don't t give pets anti-rabies shots. , ' Hospitals closing out or restricting smoking Ninety-five percent of hospitals across the province have either put a complete ban on smoking or have restricted smoking. Memorial Hospital in Bowman- ville has had a no-smoking policy in effect for just under a year which basically makes it a smoke-free facility. Smoking is allowed for staff in the staff lounge while patients who are mobile must.use special smoke areas set-up on the three floors. Terminally ill patients are allowed to smoke in their rooms. Visitors are not allowed to smoke in other than the designated special areas. Fifty percent of hospitals in Ontario Ontario have an ultimate aim of banning banning smoking in total. United Way campaign $700,000 short of target The United Way campaign in Oshawa-Whitby and Newcastle is short $700,000 of its 1987 goal of $2.6 million.
