4-Orono Weekly Times, Wednesday, Novmeber 11, 1987 SPORTS New talent on Roughley tykes hold their own On Friday, October 30th the Qrono Roughley Insurance Tykes had their first game of the year and the first game ever for six of the kids. They played a strong and experienced experienced team from Bowman ville and faired well in a 7 - 6 loss. The Orono scoring was led by Danny MacDonald with 3 goals and 2 assists, Adam VanDam 2 goals and 3 assists and Murphy Irvine 1 goal and 2 assists. Further assists were provided by David Harman (2) and Steve Gates. Some great goaltending goaltending was provided by Michael Hutton Hutton while Steven Foster, Amy McAllister, Andrew Reid, Jeremy Pare and Kyle Beacock all played a very strong game. Special thanks to Danny MacDonald MacDonald for filling in for the injured Kevin Copping whom we hope to h^ve back in action soon. Holiday Juicers come up with fantastic win Orono Holiday Juicers opened their season Sunday night with a fantastic win at Manvets Arena. The consistent practicing of the drills paid off in the "Juicers" first game. The defence was very strong along with the excellent goaltending of our veteran player Miss Amanda Haines with letting only one goal slip past her. Her goaltending duties were put to the test at the beginning of the second period when she had to defend her net from her own team members! Four of the five year veterans accounted accounted for 8 of the 14 goals, with "hat tricks" going to Jeff Gates and Wade Peacock and one each going. to Brian Hogenhout and Daniel Buttigieg. The balance of the goals were divided up amongst the first year players with young Danny MacDonald netting four goals and Greg Bugl with two. The assists were plentiful in this game with Grant Esler accounting for five of them. Both Coach Sawyer and General Manager Dale Haines were very pleased with the performance of their young team. The "Juicers" take to the ice for their second game Saturday, November 14th at 2:30 p.m. against Oakwood at Orono. Congratulations Congratulations team on an excellent game and your first win. Orono Atoms OMHA play close encounters On November 3rd Orono played host to Omemee. The Omemee Club came out flying and goaler Chad Maartense was tested' early and often! Chad made several spec-' tacular saves as did his counterpart Clayton Rendell until finally late in the 2nd period the visitors scored to make it 1 - 0. Orono couldn't muster much offense as they only tallied 5 good shots the entire game! They did however skate with the visitors, as the play went quickly from one end to the operand there were few whistles. Orono 's "J" line seemed to be floundering a bit as centre Jamie Shetler was double shifting for the absent Jeff Hughes. Wingers Jeff Goodmurphy and Jason' Lawrence couldn't seem to get bn track without Jamie on the ice at times. Omemee scored again at the 5:49 mark of the 2nd period to go up 2 - 0. Orono finally got on the board in the 3rd period with only their fifth shot on goal. It was a fine set-up pass from centre Henry Kaldeway to send in . Jeff Goodmurohv all alone from the blue line. Jeff made no mistake and slid it in under a falling goalie to make it 2 - 1. Orono's bid to tie the game was nullified late in the third period on a tripping penalty to the home team. Final score Omemee 2 Orono 1. Forwards David Crozier, Marc David, Owen Taylor and Bryan Haines skated well for Orono. Strong defensive support was supplied supplied by Scott Ransberry,,. Aaron Staples, Paul Woods and, Michael Landers. Injured forward Daryl Reid should see action next week. On November 5th Orono visited Bewdley and came away with a 2 to 2 tie. Orono actually led 2 to 1 at one point but couldn't hang on and had to settle for a single point. Scoring for Orono was Jason ' Lawrence assisted by Jarriie Shetler at 8:11 of the 1st period. Orono's other goal was scored by Henry Kaldexvay assisted by Aaron Staples at 5:22 of the 2nd period. Next game was in Orono, Tuesday, November 10th. Stutt Bantams undefeated in first three games After 3 league games the Orono Stutt's Bantam 1 : are on a. roll and remain remain undefeated. On October 26, 1987 the local boys played host to a big Pdrt.Hope squad and split 3-3. The Orono team drew 1st blood at the 1:30 mark when Jamie Ball converted converted David Sheridan's pass, after Dustin Reid started the play. The visitors fought back in the 2nd period with 2 unanswered goals of their own. Jc if Hart wig tied it up early in this one. / . ' V • Orono 3 - Newcastle 2 On Thursday night Stutt's Bantams Bantams travelled to Newcastle and skated away with a tough 3-2 win. This was a typical hard skating, spirited match between the two evenly matched cross town rivals. The game could have went either way with top notch goaltending being being the order of the day. Orono's Billy Todd and Newcastle's Newcastle's Chris Vanhaverbeke sending them away shaking their heads. Orono finally found the mark though, late in the 1st period when Matt Stephenson found the top corner corner after being set up by Jamie Ball and Jeff Hart wig. Not to be denied though Newcastle owned the 2nd period with Trevor Rogers and Doug Nolton scoring to make it a 2 - 1 game for Newcastle. Terry Rosamond and Trevor Rodgers earned the assists. Orono turned on the jets in the third stance and finally found the key to the vault that Chris Vanhaverbeke set up, with 2 unanswered goals. The first one was scored by Dustin Reid set up by Todd Gray and Matt "The Rat" Stephenson. Matt notched the winner with ■ just 3 minutes left after Jeff "Granny" "Granny" Hart wig set him in all alone. This was a hard fought match but clearly played with just 8 penalties assessed. .It sure is a treat to see these guys go hard at each other for •an hour, with no holds barred. Then after it is over, their best of buddies with boasting rights going to the winners at school the next day. Makes the game all worthwhile and puts the fun back into the sport.
