Orono Weekly Times, Wednesday, November 11, 1987-5 Stuff Bantams • (Continued from page 4) motrd who are better known as thè "Minnowette Twins" played strong games for their teams. Orono 6 - Port Petty 4 This game was a rough, chippy _ «fair with tempers getting a little flared at the end of the match., However, although not their best effort so far, Orono outplayed the visitors to earn a 6 - 4 win. Tyler Gibson playing a strong game notched the first 2 goals early in the game with David "Shifty" Sheridan earning two assists, Todd Grey and Rob Rowe getting the others. In this game Orono looked like they were going to cakewalk but kept letting Port Perry back into into the game. Port Perry opened up the second period with a, goal of their own only to have the Stutt's team rebound with 2 quick counters to move ahead 4 - 1. Rob "Romo" Rowe playing his strongest game of the year netted his 500 career goal.(this figure is not confirmed, however) Romo's goal was assisted by Jason Major and Todd Gray. Matt Stephenson threaded the needle on a solo effort to pot the other one. At this point.it looked like Orono was home and cooled out but Port Perry had other ideas with Lee Philips scoring right from the draw. The third period was a seë-saw affair with each team scoring two goals a piece. Todd Gray who was flying all , night turned Rob Rowes set up into a goal, hitting the lower corner, stick side. (Todd rallied again late in the game with Tyler Gibson doing the bull work on the play. Jason Burnham and Brian Rodd played strong two way games to help then- teams to Victory. Although the boys are undefeated they still have room for improvement. Their passing and team play leaves a little to be desired at times. However, it is early in the season yet and getting used to each others style will come as the year goes on. Look for still further improvement. This years team con- . sists of Jason Burnham, Andy Taylor, Rob Rowe, Todd Gray, David Sheridan, Tyler Gibson, Brian Rodd, Jamie Ball, Jeff Hart- wig, Jason Major, Matt Stephenson and Mack Cholmondeley, with Billy Billy Todd playing great hockey between between the pipes. Peewee Dustin Reid has helped us out in a couple of games and has shown he can hold his own with the best of them at the Bantam level. Thanks for the help so far Dusty. Mark Cholmondeley has missed the last two gaihes with an injury and his intense intense style has been missed. This years edition of the Stutt's Orono bantams is coached by: Bruce "The Bear" Todd assisted by Russ "Plumb Bob" Major and Bob "The Scout" Sheridan. For an excellent 3 - 1 On November 6th Lakefield "Whites" visited Orono to take on Orono's Kinsmen Peewee Tri County Club. Lakefield came out flying! Only superlative goaltending by Chad Puk and Scott Hall thwarted Lakefield's attempt to score until midway through the 3rd period. Orono finally opened the scoring at 8:08 of the 3rd when centre centre Stephen Shetler banged in a loose puck in the goal crease. Assisting was left winger Jason Mercer. Right winger Cam Tomkins worked diligently in the 'corners' to help make the play possible. Lakefield scored less than 2 minutes later to tie it at 1 on a defensive mis-cue in Orono's end. Lakefield then went ahead 2 to 1 forty seconds later on a two man breakaway from neutral ice!! Coaler Chad Puk had no chance on that one! Finally Orono tied it at 2 - 2 as they took advantage of a Lakefield penalty. Stephen Shetler scored hj,s second of the game with less than 3 minutes remaining in the game. Assisting was number 4 Brandon Ovenden. Orono came on strongly after the tying goal, but couldn't manage the go ahead goal. Game ended 2-2. Forwards Jay Hansen and Adam Wallace as well as the second line combination of Dan Walters, Scott Hentig and Greg Hooper all performed strongly, strongly, especially in the third period. Defensively Neil Haines, John But- tigieg, Mike Schoep and Shawn MacKenzie all played admirably, especially in the first two periods. Next home game is Friday, November 13th. Although not given an official assist, winger Scott _ Hentig was very involved in the play on both of Dan's goals. At 5:38 of the period, Adam Wallace passed to Brandon Ovenden behind the Lakefield net . Brandon carried the puck out to (he side of the Lakefield net and slipped it past the surprised goalie for a 6 to 1 Orono lead. Lakefield scored again at 4:57 but Orono,'came back as Jason Mercer scored at 3:54 again assisted by Stephen Shetler and Cameron Tomkins. With a 7 to 2 lead, the Orono boys seemed to be in an all- out offensive effort and were caught by a counterattack as Lakefield struck for three goals in just 21 seconds! The Orono team recovered from this shock and, with everyone concentrating on the game, shut down the opposition while still testing the Lakefield goalie. The final score was Orono 7 and Lakefield 5.
