4-Oronti Weekly Times, Wednesday, November 18, 1987 SPORTS O.M.H.A. Atoms win one, lose one On November 10th Orono hosted Manvers to the tune of a disappointing disappointing 2 to 1 loss. Orono once again had a slow start as Manvers was allowed time and time again to penetrate the defensive zone with many good scoring chances. Only the combined goaltending duties of Chad Maartense and Clayton Rendell with many fine saves kept Orono in the game. With the score 2 to 0 going into the third period, Orono finally got on the board when defensemen Mike Landers found the mark unassiste'd at 9:39. Unfortunately time wâs running out quickly and another 'late in the game' penalty by Orono at 9:24 nullified any effort to tie the game. Final score Manvers 2 Orono 1. On November 14th Orono travelled to Port Perry and came away with a fine effort. As well as 2 points! Early in the game it looked like the same old story as Orono was down 2 to 0 after the 1st period! However, this time the tide turned as Orono fought back for 3 unanswered goals. One in the 2nd period and two in the final frame. Scoring first for Orono was defenseman Aaron Staples unassisted at 4:25 of the 2nd period. In the third period Aaron scored his second of the game assisted by centre centre Jeff Goodmurphy. The winning goal came at 8:05 when defenseman Mike Landers made another one of his patented end to end rushes 'ala Bobby Orr* and found the mark, assisted by goaler Clayton Rerrdell! Final score Orono 3, Port Perry 2. Daryl Reid was back in the line up and provided a much needed 'offensive' 'offensive' lift for the team. Nice to have you back Daryl! Forwards Jamie Shetler, Jason Lawrence, Bryan Haines, Owen Taylor, Jeff Hughes, David Crozier and Mar David all put forth a fine effort. Centre Henry Kaldeway dropped back on defense for the evening and played admirably as did Paul Woods. Once again excellent goaltending was provided by Chad Maartense and " Clayton Rendell. Coach Vey was certainly pleased with the boys' efforts this time around; Next home game is November 17th. Pee Wees squeak by Pickering Village In exhibition play on Thursday, November 12th, the O.M.H.A. Peewees managed a 3-2 victory over Pickering Village in Pickering. . The game was long, consisting of a 10 minute period, a 15 minute period, and a 20 minute period. It was fast moving and hard hitting resulting in 8 minutes in'penalties for Pickering Village and 11 minutes in penalties for Orono, with a game misconduct going- to Scott McAllister for- high sticking. The teams played for two scoreless periods before getting on the board at the 14 minute mark in* the third period witti a goal by Dustin Reid, assisted by Brent Gates and Scott McAllister. Pickering Village retaliated by scoring two goals and moying to a 2 - 1 lead over Orono. Fine defensive playing by Jim Partner, Partner, Paul Flintoff, Craig Nemis, Brad Minnis, and Ryan Tomlinson thwarted countless scoring opportunities opportunities by Pickering. Ryan, who was playing his first game after coming off the bench with an injury, injury, turned in a fine game for Orono. Jarrett Aus was superb in net, blocking numerous shots and executing many remarkable saves while Chad VanDam waited on the sidelines, ready to provide backup if necessary. Orono played most of the third period short-handed due to penalties, and although they were obviously exhausted, their fine defensive and offensive playing put them on the board twice more. Dustin Reid put one between the pipes at the 4 minute mark, assisted by Jim Partner and Brent Gates, and again fired one home with 45 seconds remaining, assisted by Craig Nemis and Brent Gates. Trevor Lomax, Cameron Esler, and Chris Yeo showed finè offensive playing and good bàck-checking and although they had several hard shots on'net were unable to get on ( the board. " Congratulations to the boys for their fine effort and superb team work. That's what sports are all about! Kinsmen PeeWees trade a win for a loss Bad luck was around for the Orono Kinsmen Peewee Tri-County team on Friday the 13th as they met the 'Dykstra Deli' Peewee team from Bowmanville for an exhibition game. The local boys started out on an even footing with the visitors, with lots of action in both ends, but the visitors came out of the first period with a two goal lead. The second second period was hard fought but neither team was able to score. The final period was a repeat of the first, with Bowmanvlte scoring twice and the home team unable to get a score. The final score of Bowmanville 4 and Orono 0 is misleading as Orono had several good chances but couldn't connect. Orono's goal't ending dim of Chad Puk and Scott Hall were both excellent excellent in net, with Scott robbing Bowmanville by gloving a shot while flat on his back and stopping them on a penalty shot late in the third period. Just a little more team effort and the score could have been much closer. On November 14th, Orono Kinsemen Peewees travelled to Millbrook for a scheduled league game. Having seen that individual effort wasn't enough, in their exhibition exhibition game against Bowmanville, the boys put on a devastating display of team play with good passing and heads-up playmaking. At 7:31 of the first period, Jason Hapsen knocked the puck behind the Millbrook net where Adam "Wallace outfought the defense to pass the puck to Brandon Ovenden for, Orono's first goal. Orono scored again as Jason Mercer fed a pass to Stephen Shetler whose shot was partly stopped by the goalie. Cameron Tomkins was right at the goal crease as the puck came loose and batted it in. At 3:09, there was an altered replay of Orono's first goal as Brandon dumped the puck behind the Millbrook goal where Adam took over. He passed to Jason Mercer, open and alone in front, for a quick shot and score. A goal-mouth scramble late in the period allowed Millbrook to get on the scoreboard. The defense of Neil Haines, John Buttigieg, Mike Schoep and Sean McKenzie worked hard containing the play in the Millbrook end and this effort payed' off just over a minute into the second period. Sean McKenzie blocked a clearing shot and rifled a low shot to the goal crease where Brandon Ovenden deflected the puck into the net. Later iri the period, Jason Mercer preventèd an icing call by outracing a Millbrook defenseman for the puck shot into the Millbrook end and 'centered a- pass to Stephen Shetler in the slot and his quick shot gave the goalie no chance. For the rest of the second and most of the third period, there was lots of ac- (Continued page 5) MOM'S KITCHEN Downtown Orono 983-5310 EAT IN or TAKE OUT THEY'RE BACK Deep Fried Chicken and Wedgies For Take-Out Telephone yôur order (983-5310).
