4-Orono Weekly Times, Wednesday, January <r. 1988 SPORTS Orono OMHA Novice have happy holiday On December 28th they travelled to Druro to play in a tournament. In their first game, they played a house league team from Peterborough Peterborough and it took a shoot out before they finally beat St. John's. Jeff Parry closed the door on St. John's while the two Jonathans (Burnham and Noble) scored with Ryan Winning netting the winner. With our spirits high we started the second game against Lindsay. But it didn't take long for Lindsay to jump into an early lead. Jeff Parry and the Maytag repairman had a lot in common in this game. The final score was 7 -0. On January the 3rd we started the New Year off with a trip to Manvers. The boys learned a good lesson from Mr. West and Mr. MacDonald about hustle during Saturday's practice and played in spired hockey. Jeff Parry used both his blocker and his trapper to hold Manvers off the score card. Jonathan Nobel, skated the length of the ice to catch Manver's, star centre Brian Nash from behind with a perfect sweep check. Devon Witheridge seemed to have adjusted well to his new line-mates, Brett Maartense and B.J. Hackett and played a very strong game. But all of these spectacular plays weren't enough. With two minutes to go two players swOoped down on Jeff all by themselves. Scott Nesbitt made no mistakes with an excellent wrist shot. Although -we lost, the fans really enjoyed the game and the hustle the team showed. It looks like a good New Year. The team would like to wish everyone a Happy New Year! Orono 'Juicers' win with only 8 players Holiday Juicers were put to a test Saturday, January 2, 1988 when they came up against Manvers with only 8 skaters, the true meaning of team work certainly was evident in this game. Amanda excelled in net after a vacation and came up with fantastic moves to give her and her team mates an 8 - 0 win. Jeff Gates certainly made himself known by scoring 5 of the 8 goals! Congrats Jeff. Assists went to Steve Wilson, Wade Peacock, Greg Bull, Scott Sawyer, Danny MacDonald and Daniel Buttigieg. Other goals in the game went to Brian Hogenhout assisted by Danny MacDonald, Daniel Buttigieg unassisted and Wade Peacock was assisted by Danny Danny MacDonald and Greg Bull. -It was noted by the Orono Management Management how much the Manvers team had improved and that their goaltending goaltending was certainly one of their strong points. Coach Sawyer was very pleased to see how well the team members played in different positions due to a Shortage of e players. The team hopes Grant is feeling much better and hope to see him back in action next weekend. The Christmas vacation saw the Juicers travel to Newcastle for a one day tournament. Wade Peacock made his debute in net in Amanda's absence and Wade turned in an excellent excellent game in net, playing goal for the first time. Carters of Bowman- ville beat the Orono Juicers by 2 - 1 in the first game with Scott Sawyer scoring the only goal, assisted by Danny MacDonald. The second game also against a Bowmanville team saw the Juicers fall to a 4 - 2 defeat. Orono's goals were scored by Danny MacDonald assisted by Grant Esler, and Chris Mumby assisted by Brian Hogenhout. The boys gave 100 percent in both games and did themselves proud. A big thanks to all family and friends who came out to support our team and a special big thanks to our sponsor Verne Cowan for the treats he supplied to the boys after the games. The Juicers are heading into a busy 3 game weekend. Good Luck team'and keep having fun! Tennant Fuelers have most busy- holiday - - Firstly, 1 hope all players and their families had a safe and healthy holiday season. Since December 13th our boys have played no less than 10 games including 4 tournament tournament games and 2 exhibitions games. Through it all the boys, have put forth a consistent effort and on many occasions have provided their families with memorable entertainment. entertainment. On December 13th Orono visited Baltimore for an exhibition game skating away with a well deserved 2 to 0 victory! Scoring for Orono was Mike Landers assisted by David Crozier, Jeff Hughes got the insurance insurance marker with Jason Lawrence and Owen Taylor assisting. December 1.5th Orono hosted Newcastle and battled to a 1 to 0 victory. This was a real crowd pleaser with Clayton Rendell and Chad Maartense sharing the Orono shut out win. Scoring the lone winn- m ing goal was David Crozier assisted by Daryl Reid at 8:19 of the 2nd period. On December 19th our boys travelled to Cobourg for a 1 day tournament. Their 1st game against Belleville was an exciting come- from-behind 3 to 2 victory in overtime. overtime. Jamie Shetler opened Orono's , scoring assisted by Jason Lawrence and Jeff Goodmurphy. Daryl Reid scored unassisted to tie the game 2 to 2 to send it into a 5 minute overtime overtime period. Tournament rules dictated dictated each 'side plays a man short and after every minute in overtime an additional player is removed from the ice. Daryl Reid banged in the winner with j'ust 22 seconds left in overtime. The goal was assisted by Mike Landers, tiie only other Orono skater on the ice!! Orono's 2nd game was a 4 to I loss to a much stronger skating Warkworth Club. Henry Kaldeway scored unassisted for Orono's only tally. Tri-County Tykes earn 'B' Div. championship December 21st saw the boys host the Tri-County Orono Peewee's in an exhibition contest. The Peewce's understandibiv cam.e out on top, but only by a narrow 1 to 0 margin!! Hats off to our boys as they skated their hearts out against their older counterparts. Credit must go to the Peewees for a fine display of sportsmanship and fun as well. December 22nd the boys hosted a much stronger and disciplined Millbrook team and went down to 4 to 1 defeat. Once again it was Chad Maartense and Clayton Rendell who..kept the score low with many fine saves. Jeff Hughes scored Orono's only goal assisted by Bryan Haines. Orono only managed half a dozen shots on goal in Millbrook's end. December 23rd, Orono visited their cross-town rivals in Newcastle to thé tune of 3 to 1 loss. Orono seemed a little flat in this contest and Newcastle was seeking revenge for their 1 to 0 loss in their last outing with Orono. Jeff Goodmurphy Goodmurphy was Orono's lone marksman assisted by Jamie Shetler. December 28th, saw the boys travel to Cannington for another 1 day tournament. Orono lost a 1 to 0 squeaker to Bowmanville in the 1st game. The 2nd game saw an 'awesome' Gravenhurst team thump our guys 12 to 0! "Oh well, as they say back to the drawing board!" January 3rd saw Orono play it's final regular league game in Millbrook. Unfortunately they weren't prepared for this stronger skating club as they went down to a 5 to 0 defeat. Millbrook appears to be the 'team to beat' in the playoffs this year. With a little more team effort effort and some good old positive thinking the boys could do well in the 'second season'. Good Luck Boys! Well, we've lots of hews this week ' on the Tri-County -Tykes. Four games, all on the road, including including a three game performance in the Newcastle Tournament in which we're happy tp report the ypungsters came out "B" Division Champs. On Decerrtber 19th the Tykes travelled to Millbrpok for their first road game .of the year. Unfortunately Unfortunately it seems they left their scoring scoring touch at home and lost 4 - 0. From the parents and other fans its clear scoring was the only problem. The kids worked hard, hustled and skated the whole game. Both as individuals individuals and as a team it was probably probably their best game to date. They just had no luck around the net. Adam VanDam was goalie and did his best. Stopping 15 good quality, close in dnd break away shots. We only hope the kids realize this happens happens to the best from time to time. On December 29th the Newcastle tournament was held. In the first game Orono played London Life from Bowmanville. It was an evenly matched game featuring some good end-to-end rushes and great goaltending from both teams, Amy McAllister was in net for Orono allowihg only one screened shot which she may not have seen. That goal wasn't until the third period. Unfortunately it was the only goal ,of the game moving Orono into the 'B' division. What can be said except except the effort was definitely there but the breaks were not, (Oh for that magical scoring touch).
