4-Orono Weekly Times, Wednesday, January 20, 1988 SPORTS Opposition improves for Orono Juicers Orono 4 - Milibrook 3 Last Monday, January 11th the Juicers travelled to Milibrook where they came up against a greatly greatly improved Milibrook team, Danny Danny Buttigieg's unassisted goal opened opened the scoring for Orono. Milibrook potted the next 3 goals, ending the second period, leading the game 3 - 1. Orono came out in the third getting goals from Wade Peacock, Danny MacDonald and Chris Mumby, assists going to Brian Hogenhout and Grant Esler. Chris Mumby scored the winning goal with 4 minutes left in the game, unassisted. Milibrook pulled their goalie with 2 Vi minutes remaining in the game and had numerous chances to score, but the Orono players kept clearing the puck out of their end to make the score ending ending up in a 4 - 3 win. Orono 2 - Manvers 1 On Saturday, January 16th Orono faced a much improved Manvers squad. Orono opened to scoring with a goal by Chris Mumby assists çoing to Wade Peacock and Scott Sawyer. Manvers came back in the second tieing the game at one a piece. The Juicers had numerous chances but failed to put the puck in the net. With 1 minute and 10 seconds remaining in the game Brian Hogenhout gave Orono the lead, assists going to Jeff Gates and, Wade Peacock. Coach Sawyer feels he has to go back to basics as the kids are not playing their positions or hustling on the puck carriers. Orono 7 - Ops 1 On January 17th, after a fan- MEET THE JUICERS tastic practice in the morning with the whole time spent on basics, the Juicers faced an undefeated Ops team, but this was short lived as Orono defeated them 7 - 1. Orono opened the scoring first putting them on the scoreboard in the first period with four goals. Danny McDonald scored twice, Brian Hogenhout and Wade Peacock each scoring once, assists going to Wade Peacock, Grant Esler with 2 and Greg Bull with 2. The second period was scoreless with end to end rushes. The start of the third saw Orono score 2 more, with goals going going to Danny McDonald and Brian Hogenhout, assists going to Jeff Gates. Ops got on the scoreboard with their only goal with 3 minutes left in the game. The seventh Orono goal was scored by the line of Greg Bull, Grant Esler and Danny McDonald./Since both the referees and the players were unsure as to who actually scored this final goal, credit was given to the whole line. The Orono team played a much improved improved game from Saturday's gamè. As I've mentioned before in our write-ups I think it's great the support w,e get from the player's families, and it is also nice to see so many grandparents, uncles and auhts that come out to cheer our team on. It's very important to these young people to have the kind of support you as parents are giving them, so keep up those cheers and words of encouragement. Newcastle 7 - Fenelon Falls 1 On Sunday, December 20 the Newcastle "Mikels Place" Midgets travelled back to Keswick for game two in the "Silver Stick" tournament. tournament. Again Newcastle had to play Fenelon Falls as the first game was a total point series. This game was almost an instant replay of game one with no scoring again in the first period. The second period saw Newcastle outscore Fenelon Falls 3 - 0, and the thrid period 4 -1 with the final scoe Newcastle 7 Fenelon Falls 1. Scoring for Newcastle were: Marty "Mr.. Hustle" Robinson /with 2, Brian Hill (2), Tony Bar- noski, Patrick- Woods and foaryl. Burke. With assists going to: Richard Maki (3), Patrick Woods (2), Garret Jones, Stuart Irwih, Todd Thertell, Marty Robinson and Patrick Woods. Again an excellent team effort guys!!! Special mention to Jeff Martin between the pipes. Newcastle 4 - Uxbridge 3 Tuesday, December 22, 1987 saw the Newcastle Midgets back in Keswick for game 3. This time the opposition was the powerful Uxbridge Uxbridge Club whom Newcastle had beaten in Exhibition and lost to in the Championship game of the Port Hope Tournament. The first period saw Uxbridge open the scoring at the 6:47 mark on a goal by Steve Christie, at the 6:29 mark Uxbridge made it 2 - 0 with Ronnie James doing doing the honors. In the second period Uxbridge went up by a 3 - 0 count on a goal by Brad Forsythe at this point it looked like it was going to be a blow-out but the Newcastle Club kept their composure and just kept up the hard work and were finally rewarded. With 3:19 left in the period Richard "Mr. Magic" Maki cut the count to 3 - 1 assisted by Stuart Irwin to put the Newcastle Club back in the game. The Newcastle Club came out flying in the third period and at the 8:01 mark Brian Hill assisted by David Bailey and Tim Bailey made it a 3 - 2 game. With 3:52 left in the game Stuart (never give up) Irwin tied the game 3 - 3 assisted by Brian (the lip) Hill. The last 3:52 saw both teams with excellent scoring opportunities only to be turned back by strong' goaltending at both ends. The teams then went into a 10 minute sudden death overtime period which saw end to end wide open hockey. With 1:24 left in overtime (Mr. Clutch) Stuart Irwin blasted one from just inside the blueline past a startled Uxbridge goalie to give Newcastle a great come back and win. Stuart's goal assisted by Tyrone Sluymers. Special mention to the whole team for a great team effort - way to go team! Newcastle 0 - Bradford 2 Wednesday, December 23rd saw the boys back to Keswick for game 4. Again the local lads showed they can stay with the best as they held the powerful Bradford team scoreless for over two periods, (Bradford as Uxbridge are both 6" centres). The third period saw Bradford go up 1 - 0 oh a goal by Mike Beaman, with 4:45 left iq *' ' game Bradford's Nelson G, came up with the insurance goal to end the game 2 - 0. Although this ended the tournament for Newcastle Newcastle they proved they are capable of playing some excellent hockey when they want to and should do well if they stick to hard work and disciplined hockey.
