Kinsmen Pee Wees end season undefeated Friday, January 15th saw the Oronp Kinsmen Peewees play Manvers for the last time in the regular season schedule. It was obvious obvious from the start that the Manvers team was out to avenge their previous losses to the Orono team, as the Manvers players forced the play at every opportunity and put the local boys off their good team form. The action was going up and down the ice until Manvers opened the scoring at the 1:16 mark of the first period. It was not until the 2:11 mark of the second period that Orono finally got their opener after lots of hectic action at both ends, Mike Schoep took a pass at centre ice and tried to dump the puck into the Manvers end past the last defenseman. The puck bounced off of the Manvers defender and Mike was able to step around him, grab the loose puck and score with a good shot on the breakaway. This goal got the team back on track and Orono went ahead with just 28 seconds left in the second period as a result of a goal-mouth scramble in the Manvers end. Stephen Shetler poked a puck loose from a crowd in front and got it into the crease where Cameron Tomkins got his stick on it in tirfie to get it past the sprawling goalie and into the net. The third period was even harder . fought as both teams tried to add to their scores»while not giving the other team a chance. Finally, at 5:50, Stephen Shetler got the puck out of the Manvers corner and passed passed to Mike Schoep in the slot. Mike wheeled to avoid a Manvers player and fired a shot into the net for Orono's third goal. Manvers wasn't finished and kept pressing until they managed to score again at 2:19 to cut Orono's lead back to just one goal. Super forechecking by Dan Walter, Greg Hooper, Jason Mercer, Jason Hansen, Scott Hen- tig and Brandon Ovenden held Manvers off while the defense of Scott Hartwig, John Buttigieg, Adam Wallace and Sean McKenzie cleared the puck out of Orono's end. Chad Puk and Scott Hall were called on to make, and made, several heart-stopper saves over the course of the game to keep the team on top. The final countdown was frantic as Orono took a late penalty and Manvers pulled their goalie for an extra skater but to no avail. Final score stayed Orono 3 and Manvers 2. Definitely not one of the best team efforts, boys, get back to that style as playoffs are coming up soon! On January 22nd, 1988, the Orono Kinsmen Peewees finished their regular season with a game against Millbrook in Orono. Orono started the scoring at the 7:02 mark of the first period when Scott Hen- tig dug the puck out of the corner to Adam Wallace in the slot. Adam's shot was knocked down in front of the net but Brandon Ovenden was able to sweep the puck into the net before the goalie could recover. Millbrook came back less than a minute later to tie the game as Orono failed to clear the zone, but Orono came back to again take the lead at 5:11. On this play, Sean McKenzie blocked a clearing pass at the Millbrook blue-line and fed a pass to Jason fiercer deeper in the zone. Jason got the puck to Stephen Shetler who flipped the puck over the falling goalie to end the first period scoring. Orono scored the only goal of the second period when Scott Hartwig got the puck at the blue-line and passed to Jason Mercer in the corner. corner. Jason got a quick pass to the front of the net where Stephen Shetler batted the puck into the open corner. The Orono team really took over in the third period as they outscored Millbrook by five goals to one. The first goal was a beautiful passing play that completely handcuffed the Millbrook goalie. Brandon Ovenden carried the puck into the Millbrook end and drop-passed the ' puck to Scott Hentig. Scott passed to Adam Wallace on the wing and he relayed the puck back to Brandon Brandon at the open side for a wide open Tri-County Tykes play .500 hockey The Tri-County Tykes were very bu'sy on Saturday with 2 games. The first, at home against Manvers. The second in Bowmanville against Shoppers Drug Mart. In the game against Manvers the players were told to keep smiles on their faces for the game was video taped' and in seeing the video I can say everyone looked gdod, lots of hussle and enthusiasm. enthusiasm. 1 must also point out that the video had souhd and two mothers sitting nice and close were heard through out the tape having a very good time. The game itself was well and evenly played ending in a well deserved 4,-4 tie. The first period was rather a defensive one in which the Ofono goalie Andrew Reid showed Manvers he was here to play. Orono-got the only .goal in the first period from Adam Van- Dam with assists to Kyle Beacock and Amy McAllister. The second period was a little more offensive with 3 goals, one by Orono and two by Manvers. Amy McAllister got the Orono goal just 1:00 into the period with assists going to Murphy Irvine and Steven Foster. This seemed to wake up the Manvers scorers who came back 1:30 later with one of their own. Then with 2:00 left they tied things at 2 - 2, Manvers then got the lead 2:00 into t hr v d forcing Orono to increase the---attack. Adam VaiiDum did this with a great end to end rush pulling the Manvers goalie to one side and stuffing the puck home on the other. Orono then went ahead on a beautiful 3 way passing play -started by Steven Foster from behind the Manvers goal out to Jeremy Pare at the right face-off circle who then passed to Murphy ' .Irvine, in front of the* goaf.and he . fired a 10 foot wrist shot into the > net. Manvers tied the game with just" 1:00 left sending both teams home happy. David Harman in his first game as a forward and Kevin Copping coming back after a bout with the flu must be thanked for their good effort. Steven Gates played Well defensively and Mike Hutton Jii. stopped a great many sho}s and passes from reaching the front of the Orono goal N In the Bowmanville game Orono came up against a strong and experienced experienced team and although the score was 4 - 0 for Bowmanville they have nothing to hang their heads about. They played the game with great effort and hussle, not allowing a stronger team to out do them. Jeremy Pare had to stop many shots on the Orono net and did a good job of it. Adam Van- Dam who was asked by the coaches to shadow a talented Mike McCrory showed he could play with the best. Thanks:, Adam! Thanks Orono Tykes! We'll get them another time. (Continued page 6) shot at 10:10! At 9:28, Scott Hartwig Hartwig fired-.the puck into the Millbrook crease and a goal-mouth scramble resulted with Stephen Shetler poking the puck to Cameron Tomkins who got the puck over the line for the goal. Orono tallied again at 8:20 after a face-off deep in Millbrook's end. Dan Walters won the draw by hooking the puck back to Sean McKenzie on the point and Sean's quick shot beat the goalie cleanly high to the glove side. The game then settled into an end-to-end type of play with more work for the goalies and defense until the last Orono Wei minute of hectic action, With 56 seconds left, Mike Schoep dug the puck from the corner and passed to Dan Walters behind the net. Dan gave the puck to Greg Hooper in front of the crease and Greg quickly shot the puck into the net. Just 23 seconds later, Scott Hentig intercepted intercepted a Millbrook pass at centre ice and got the puck to Jason Hansen. Jason carried the puck in over the blueline and passed to Brandon Ovenden who wasted no time in finishing his hat trick for the night as he banked the puck in off the near goal post. ' Millbrook finished the scoring at the 7 second r Times, Wednesday, January 27, 1988-5 mark on a wild rebound from the back boards. Chad Puk and Scott Hall played their usual fine game in net, keeping Millbrook off the board on several fine plays. As well as those mentioned on the score sheet, John Buttigieg played a fine game on defense, blocking rushes and feeding the forwards. A fine team game, boys, you deserved the win. The final score was Orono 8 and Millbrook 2. The season ends for the boys with an undefeated record of 16 wins and 4 ties in league play. Next up is a few exhibition exhibition games and then into the playoffs. Keep up the good play!
