6-Orono Weekly Times, Wednesday, January 27, 1988 Orono outplays Ops ties Port Hope , On Saturday, Orono faced Ops winning 2 -1. The Orono players dominated the play throughout the game with great goaitending by the Ops'goalie. Orono's first goal was by Gram Esier assists going to Greg Bull and Danny MacDonald. Ops also scored in the first period tieing the game. Wade Peacock scored the winning goal in the second period assists going to Jeff Gates and Brian Hogenhout. Orono had numerous chances, but failed to put it pass the Op's fantastic goalie. Later that afternoon Orono Juicers travelled to Port Hope to face a Novice Select Team. Orono's 7 skaters faced a full squad of 14 MEET THE JUICERS Daniel Buttigieg Defense Port Hope players. The seven skaters made up of Brian Hogenhout, Daniel Buttigieg, Wade Peacock, Grant Esier, Steve Wilson, Jeff Gates and Chris Mum- ly had to play every position against the strong Port Hope team. Scott Sawyer was faced with numerous shots, playing very strong in net for Orono. The forwards and defense played a superb game protecting their tie. Jeff Gates potted the only goal for Orono unassisted. Coach Sawyer was pleased to see how well the young players handled so much ice time without much rest. The Juicers face this same Port Hope team January 30th in Orono at 2:30. . ' Steven Wilson Defense Busy week for the Orono OMHA Novice This week marked the beginning of the playoffs for the local skaters. They played a total of four games and worked hard in two practices all in six days. On Tuesday, January 19, 1988 they travelled to Omemee to begin the round robin series. Scott MacDonald MacDonald pounced on a rebound on a shot from Jonathan Noble to ptit the Roughley's team ahead. In typical playoff fashion the teams played exciting hockey. Orono held on until 4 minutes left in the game and Omemee created a tie game. On Friday, January 22, 1988 Novice playoff hockey came to Orono. The team from Man vers continued its domination of the Orono team by shutting them out three to nothing. The score could have been higher if it had not been for the brilliant goaitending of Jeff Parry. The Orono team was held off the scoreboard by a solid effort by the Manver defensive line. The coaches were pleased that even though we lost, the players were using using some of the plays developed in practice. On Saturday, the team was on the ice again for an ,8:00 a.m. practice. After a light practice, the team gathered v in the dressing room to watch a hockey video that coach Burnham provided. They also enjoyed enjoyed doughnuts and pop. Then it was on with the gear for an exhibition exhibition game with Oshawa's House League leaders. The teams were evenly matched, hilt played a more open style. Orono scored two unanswered goals to end the third period with a 7 - 6 victory under their belts. Sommer West lead the attack with three goals and an assist. Devon Witheridge had two and singles going to Scott MacDonald MacDonald and Jonathan Noble. Simon Weagant had two assists with Ryan Winning, Scott MacDonald, MacDonald, Brett Maartense and Tomas Wakefield each chipping in for one. Again the game provided plenty of spectators with exciting end to end back and forth hockey. On Sunday, January 24, 1988 the Novices travelled through - snow and slush to Millbrook for' their third playoff game. Both teams came out starting the game with spirits high and playing all positions well, typical playoff hockey. Millbrook scored their 1st goal in the early part of period one and with Orono putting putting forward an extra effort Sommer Sommer West scored from. Scçtt MacDonald MacDonald to tie the game. The second period was steady fast hockey going end to end but Millbrook scored a second goal at 2:54, going ahead with 2 - 1 lead. With defense working working together we held off Millbrook until the last 4 minutes of the third period when they scored 2 more goals making the final score 4-1. Our next playoff game will be Friday, Friday, January 29, 1988 at Orono Arena. . • Local teachers 'D' champs in Peeler toumie All school and no play make a teacher a dull person. So on Salur- day, January 23, 1988 the Wednesday Wednesday night skaters joined forces lo enter their first old-timers tournament tournament sponsored by the B & F Peelers of Newcastle. They lost their first game in an overtime sud den dealh period without their goalie 4 - 3, after leading most of the game. In (he second game, they bowed to the Bay Dukes 4-1, The educators played poorly and didn't get any breaks. They regrouped in . the third game and seemed to have Lady Luck sitting on, their backs. Orono-Loçkharts' Public School news Orono Campus If you sit in the school library you can hear the kids playing and hard at work. The little kids come out to the library to work. You can work fine if you like working where you can see everyone hard at work . Some people think school is no good. Have you thought what school can teach you? Just think before you say anything! Orono Girls Volleyball The girls for volleyball have been trying hard. They have been meeting at the 'school Mondays, sometimes Wednesdays and Fridays. They have to be at school by 8:00. I should know they're trying trying hard because I'm on the team. Orono team has played a couple of games against other teams. We didn't win them all but we tried our best. I'm sorry for the people who tried out for the team and did not make it. For those who did I hope you do well at the tournaments. House League The boys and girls House League has been going well. For all the people people who show up for the games, all the captains thank you. The Orono teams are called Panthers, Cougars, Town council briefs On motion of Councs. Hubbard and McKnight the Public Works department is to report on the possibility and feasibility of constructing constructing a sidewalk from Bowman- ville to the new arena site at the west boundary of the Town. Counc. Hubbard said the walk would be a connecting link for pedestrian traffic. Mayor Winters suggested that the old arena be retained in the Town's ownership. He suggested that the building be dismantled but the ice pad be retained for an outdoor skating rink in a park-like setting. Counc. Cowman pointed out that the Town was expecting some $170,000 from the sale" of the old arena to help finance the new arena. Staff are to investigate. Counc. Cowman pointed out that the bridge in Hampton across the old mill pond had been closed due to its delapidated condition. She stated the last estimate to replace the bridge had been set at half a million and that if the pond was to be restored along with a new bridge the cost rose to one and a half million. "It is a contengious issue", she said. On motion of Councs. Stapleton and Wotten the Town is asking the Region to consider the Tyrone road north of Taunton and the Kendal- Newtonville road be considered for upgrading in 1988. This resulted in a 7 - 2 victory over a team from Pori Hope and won the "D" championship. Pa'ul Peyman was selected as the_ team's M.V-.P. and received an equipment bag. The team would like to thank the Peeler's for their plaque, hats and 'an enjoyable tournament. Cobras, Dragons. All the learns have been trying hard. Il does not matter if you win or lose it counts if you had fun. Outdoor Centre The Grade 6 went to the Outdoor Centre. Half of the grade sixes did Contour Mapping and the other half did things about trees. Then we would trade. After we had lunch we went tubing. All the grade sixes loved loved it. Some people went down oh the double tube - they would always yell and wipe out. We all went down a couple of times. Mr. Leith went down on the big tube. Everyone had a great time.
