And Grotto did just that. They came out strong scoring the First goal by Adam VanDam with assists going to Jeremy Pare and Andrew Reid. But at this point Oshawa put their secret weapon on the ice in the form of a kid named Beck. This young lad proceeded to score the next four goals and left everyone shaking their heads. Adam got one more with assists going to Steven Gates and Kevin Copping. Beck then scored 2 of the 3 remaining Oshawa goals. Steven Foster closed out Orono's goal scoring assisted by Amy McAllister and Kyle Seacock. Murphy Irvine played very good in the Orono net stopping many shots. Despite losing this game and being being knocked out of the tournament everything was very positive. The kids had lots of fun and the parents also enjoyed themselves. In closing Pd like to say this week is not over yet, wc have a game Thursday in Newcastle and we will continue to play strong entertaining hockey. Pcewees met their long awaited nemesis when the Millbrook #1 team arrived for playoff action on Monday, February 1st. This was Orono's first look at Millbrook #1, who had played in another division all year, and were returning for playoff action. action. , The two teams played scoreless until the end of the first period when Millbrook dumped one in with 40 seconds remaining on the clock. Millbrook scored again at the 7 minute mark of the second period, but Orono quickly tied it up one minute later with a goal scored by Scott McAllister and assisted by Dustin Reid. Unfortunately, this was to be Orono's only goal of the game, with the score ending in a 5 - 1 loss for Orono. In the absence of Brent Gates, Paul Flintoff took over the winger,'s spot but was unable to score. This change in the line up left all the defensive duties to Ryan Tomlinson, Tomlinson, Jim Partner, Craig Nemis, who recently returned to full time play after an ankle injury, and Brad Minnis. The defensemen had a busy night trying to keep up with the fast paced Millbrook team. Jarrett Aus made some tremendous tremendous saves tfmid a flurry of action in the Orono netminders territory. The visitors scored first at 2:01 of the 1st frame. However, Orono came back to lie it in the 2nd period as Mike Landers took' a David Crozier pass and' skated around the net and tucked it in the corner at 9:21. At this point it looked as though Orono was really pressing to get the 'Go-Ahead' goal for their first playbff victory of the season. But late in the third Omemee scored again to go up 2 to 1. With less than a minute left and the face-off deep in Omemee's end, coach Vey pulled the goalie for a sixth attacker, but Ôrono lost the face-off and the visitors scored an "Empty-Netter" with just 17 seconds remaining to win 3 to 1. Tough one to lose guys! Orono travelled to Bewdley February 4th for their next playoff outing. Still looking for their first playoff victory, they were not to be denied this time as the Daryl Reid, Jamie Shetler and Jeff Hughes line came out flying! Jamie broke in all alone, but as the goalie went down anticipating the deke, the puck rolled rolled oft Jamie's stick into the corner. I lowever, Daryl Reid followed up i with the goalie stiil out of posi- ,, lucked it in the open side at 4:12 of the first period. At 3:11 of the 2nd period Jeff Goodmurphy fed a breaking Mike Landers a nice pass and Mike put a pretty good deke on the goalie, making no mistake, for Qrona's 2ntj goal. Less than 3 minutes later Daryl and Jamie combined again, as Daryl "faked the shot and slid it over to Jamie who re-directed into the emo- ty net. It was a pretty play as they say in "Hockey Circles". Getting the early lead seemed to give the whole team a lift as everyone skated and performed well. Owen Taylor made a couple of fine passes up the middle as did Jeff Goodmurphy. Marc David, Brian Haines, and David Crozier all played exceptionally well up front as they constantly checked their opponents opponents at every opportunity. The defensive core of Henry Kaldeway, Jason Lawrence, Paul Woods, Aaron Staples and Scott Ransberry moved the puck well behind their blue line and several fine passes "Up the Wings" were observed. Jason Lawrence seemed to fit in well on the blue line. Normally a right winger, Jason seized several" good opportunities to carry the puck in "Open Ice" and in full fligljt created his own scoring chances. Jeff Hughes had several >s Orono Weekly Times, Wednesday, February 10, 1988-5, Orono Novice Juniors suffer first league loss On January ^Oth, the Juicers played an exhibition game against a Port Hope Select Team in Orono. Orono's first "'goal was scored by Wade Peacock-assisted by Darrell Buttigieg. Second goal was scored by Jeff Gates assisted by Brian Llogenhoul and Wade Peacock. The score ended in a 5 - 2 win for Port Hope. The week previous saw the Juicers tie the score 1 - 1 with "the same Port Hope team with only seven skaters. On Saturdays game the Orono players were out hustled and out positioned. Orono then travelled to, Millbrook on February 4th to face a much improved Millbrook team. The game was scoreless until Steven Wilson scored his first goal of,the year with 48 seconds remaining in the game. The Juicers ending up winning 1 - 0. Although the boys won this game, they didn't use their scoring chances up front as well, but didn't connect this time around. With Orono up 3 to 0 Mike Landers took a bad fall into the boards as he was checked from behind. Mike had to be carried oft on a stretcher and taken to Port Hope Hospital. Fortunately he's okay, but he's.going to be a little tender on his back side for a few days! Orono seemed to be a little mesmerized by Mike's injury and as play resumed Omemee took advan- basics of hockey in this game. They are nol shooting or skating or playing playing their positions nearly as well as they did at the beginning of the season. February 6th the Juicers faced another Millbrook team, losing their first league game 3-2. Orono scored one goal in the second period by Danny Buttigieg, unassisted and then scored their setiond goal in the third period by Wade Peacock also unassisted. Orono's "performance" in the last 3 games has been very shaky in all aspects of hockey. We know you can do it as a team and as individuals so let's go Orono! Many thanks to all the team's parents who helped make our dance on January. 30th such a success!' A good time had by all! tage (even though they were short- handed) and scored at 9:03 of the 2nd period, to .come within 2 goals. Orono got back on track in the 3rd period as Daryl Reid scored his 2nd goal unassisted at;4:17. It was another 'Picture' play effort as he skated in all-alone, faked a shot and with thje goalie falling down slipped the puck intq the open side. Exactly 5 minutes lateç at 9:17, Owen Taylor passed one up the middle to Daryl who in turn relayed the puck to a breaking Jamie Shetler on left wing. Jamie put yet another fine move on the net minder and scored his 2nd goal , of the game! Final score 5 to'1 Orono. Although they weren't tested as often as Omemee both Clayton Rendel! and Chad Maarten.se, put in steady performances performances between the pipes for Orono. It 'was a fine effort all around. Let's hope it carries over into the next game February 5th in Omemee. February 5th saw Orono travel to Omemee for their 2nd playoff en- countef with this dub. Orono's line up was 1 sparse as Jamie Shetler, Daryl Reid, Chad Maartense and Aaron Staples ail had 'Previous {Engagements'. Going with only 11 skaters Orono gave their best shot, but were 6 to .0 losers. February 6th Orono visited Port Perry for a playoff contest. Only Owen Taylor and David Crozier were missing from the line up this time as our guys came up with one of their finest efforts of the season! There were several good scoring chances at both ends of the rink, but both opposing goaltenders were in a 'Stingy' mood resulting in a scoreless tie at the final buzzer. Mike Landers, playing centre in this contest, actually had Orono's best scoring chance as he broke in all alone, put a nice 'Deke' on the goalie, only to have the puck roll off his stick and harmlessly go bÿ the open side, at the last second! Good Game Guys! Next game for Orono is Tuesday, February 9th. (Continued to page 6) LOVE IN BLOOM ... FOR YOUR VALENTINE...
