Various other articles that you may read in the Times will also be written by me. Janet Crowther I am a student at Clarke and am participating in the co-operative education program this semester. My co-op placement is <U the Orono Weekly Times where 1 will be able to -obtain experience in photography and journalism. Alan Worthington of Cobourg Hospital has said Rj.at the area has a huge drug problem and massive pro blems with alcohol. He also stated that, "There is a large intravenous drug population in Cobourg and Port Hope." Wells in Janetville must be tested first In reply to a letter from Sam Cureatz concerning the extension of the municipal water supply, in Janetville the Ministry of the Environment Environment said that they would do additional sampling of wells in the community and prepare to report. This report on the hydrogeological conditions, will give the Ministry a better indication as to whether a communal piped supply of water is necessary. The Ministry states that the suggestion that 80 percent of the wells in Janetville are unfit for human consumption may not be entirely entirely accurate. Big Sisters Needed The Big Sisters of Newcastle, Oshawa and Whitby require more volunteers. At the time there are 20 youth on the waiting list, that would be pleased to have you for a Big Sister. One MPP's views on the new abortion law Northumberland MPP Joan Fawcett was surprised by the Supreme Court decision to overturn the federal abortion laws. Fawcett states that she is pro-life, mainly because of her strong Roman Catholic faith, and hopes that the law will apply equally in all cases. She believes that society has a committment committment to help women and young girls struggling with unwanted pregnancies but not by providing them with cheaper, easier access to abortions. To mount campaign for Whitby General Although the provincial Ministry of Health has, so far, turned aside additional expansion at the Whitby General Hospital the Board. is about to go ahead with fundraising activities. The Ministry, last year, gave approval approval for an additional floor at the hospital but the board is asking that further additions be undertaken to ' meet the needs of residents in the area. Expect child care centres next year With the province providing $235,000 for built-in child care centres centres in new schools the Durham Board expects to have three such. centres completed in 1989. Graham Brooks of the Durham Regional Police who pressured an Oshawa man to sell a handgun to him was found guilty last week of attempting to obstruct justice. District court Judge Patrick LeSage said he was satisfied beyond a reasonable doubt that Brooks has offered to drop an investigation of a 22 year old .Oshawa man if he sold his nine-millimetre Browning pistpl to Brooks for $50. Allegations taking toll on PCs In speaking in Cobourg recently Allan Lawrence said a barrage of conflict-of-interest allegations against the Prime Minister and two cabinet ministers was taking a toll on the federal government. . He said the controversies take away from all the good things that are happening. He said there were some fundamental achievements and that the PCs had a worthwhile story to tell. Lawrence said there was a strong case against Cote and it could get worse before it gets better. He came out swinging in defence of the Prime Minister stating that Mulroney did not violate Cabinet ministers' conflict-of-interest guidelines when he accepted a $324,000 loan from the PC party.
