8-Orbno Weekly Times, Wednesday, March 16,1988 Letter re: Library closing in Orono On Thursday evening, March 3, the residents of the Orono Community Community gathered in the Town Hall to discuss the proposed closing of our local library in accordance with a recommendation resulting from a recent study carried out by a Toronto Toronto consultant firm engaged by oùr Town Library Board, We assume that this firm performed performed a comprehensive study considering considering fully the proper locations of libraries to be placed where necessary with respect to future residential development, at the same time, bearing in mind the Of- ! ficial Plan of the Town of Newcastle. Newcastle. We understand that this Plan designates Orono as a hamlet with no plan for future development. Likewise, we presume such places as Kendal, Kirby, Leskard and Newtonville are under, similar restrictions. At the recent meeting in Orono, however, one Council member mentioned that this Official Official Plan is to be considered soon with respect to some up-dating. Today, upon the development of a new sub-division a person may purchase a property within the Town of Newcastle and immediately immediately receive and benefit from all municipal services, whereas, those citizens living in the "old" settled communities are not allowed to up- i date their services or even retain 'those which they themselves I established and have continued to ; maintain, dating back even to the -turn of the century. Fifth generation generation families are now threatened with being deprived of services, even that of our local library - a service service which they have been privileged to use for many years. Is it any wonder that we are facing an era of not only urban, but also rural illiteracy illiteracy in this year 1988! (according to latest statistics) Also, please understand that many of the residents of Orono are living here, not because of destiny but rather by reason of choice. We prefer this life-style; we are educated and we like to read the good books! It is our request, therefore, as well as our most sincere hope, that you, as our official democratic governing body, will give most serious consideration to this very pertinent issue and finally see fit to leave the Clarke Library in Orono, Town of Newcastle, open for the necessary use and services of the taxpayers ancj, their families. BUSINESS OPPORTUNITIES Mayor Winters at Monday's council meeting stated that he and the Chief Administrative Officer had met with the assistant deputy minister of Municipal Affairs as to the possible use of OHAP funds, now held by the Town, to assist Courtice residents who had paid the full amount for water connection. Some fifteen Courtice residents are asking that the Town assist them in the $5,000 charge which they paid for municipal water con nection in mid 1987 while others had paid only $300 for the same connection near the end of 1987. Mayor Winters said they were awaiting a ruling from the Ministry of Municipal Affairs. He pointed out that paying out money for water connection was not within the jurisdiction of the municipal council council and that this was the problem holding the Town back from assisting the residents. Grand Old Lady ages well (Continued from page 1) estimated at $2300.00. In all the work suggested to be undertaken amounted to an estimated amount of a little over $25,000. Of this cost the repair to the roof and the new furnace have already been completed. In summing up their remarks the consultants stated that the building was in over-all good condition and had indeed aged well. It was pointed out that the buildings of 20 • to 25'years ago and that strutural membranes were in most cases over- siz.qri.. With the repairs the consultants called for nothing more than normal normal maintenance for the building.
