Knsmen Pee Wees v (Continued frqtn page 4) The Orono Kinsmen Peewees played their third playoff game of the week on Friday, March 11th with a game in Orono against Little Britain. Now short four players to the March Break, the boys were assured of lots of ice time and chances to skate. Again, Orono opened the scoring in the first minute, at 9:01, as Scott Hentig stopped the puck at the blue line and fed Jason Mercer a pass. Jason cut across infront of the net and fired a backhand shot into the het as the goalie tried to follow. Little Britain tied the score at 8:25, but Orono came back with another at 6:35. Scott Hentig cleared the puck from the corner to Stephen Shetler in the slot. Stephen's shot was blocked but Jason Mercer dragged the rebound to the Side and shot it into the open corner. At 5:10,' Adam Wallace fired from the corner corner to the slot where Mike Schoep deflected the puck to Cameron Tomkins at the side of the net and Cameron rifled the puck home. With 3:33 left in the opening period, John Buttigieg's shot from the point came to Jason Mercer in front of the net. His shot was blocked blocked but Scott Hentig was able to push the puck into the net before the goalie could cover it. The second second period saw lots of action but no scoring. At 1*1:21 of the third, Scott Hartwig's low drive from the point came to Stephen Shetler in front and he tipped it to Jason Mercer at the corner of the net. Jason scored on a low shot that the goalie wasn't able to stop. Little Britain scored quickly at 11:01 but from then on, Orono took over completely with five unanswered goals. Scott Hartwig fired from the point to Mike Schoep at the opposite opposite corner of the net and Mike relayed across the goalmouth to Adam Wallace who finished the play with the goal at 9:36. Later, Jason Mercer stole the puck in Little Little Britain's end and fed Scott Hentig. Hentig. Scott passed to Stephen Shetler and the quick shot found the mark at 8:06. At 6:51, these three combined combined again with Scott Hentig and Jason Mercer getting Stephen Shetler into the clear and his quick shot found the top comer. At 6:22 Stephen Shetler scored on another play after Sean McKenzie's clearing clearing pass from the Orono zone up- ice to Jason Mercer put Jason and Stephen on a two on one break. Orono ended the scoring at the 1:29 mark when Scolt Hentig dropped a pass to the point from the corner. Scott Hartwig's drive from the right point bounced off the boards behind the net where Jason Mercer grabbed the puck and came out on the right side, away from the corner covered by the goalie and tucked in his fifth goal of the game. Although the score doesn't show it, both Scott Hall and Chad Puk were called called on to make several close stops and did their usual fine job in net. The last game of the. preliminary round of playoffs came on Saturday, Saturday, March 12th for the Orono Kinsmen Peewees with the game against Oakwood postponed from February 12th. Orono tried to get the game off on the right foot with lots of pressure in the first period and had several good scoring chances that just went wide of the mark, but it turned out to be Oakwood's day as they scored a goal in each of the three periods to take a commanding lead. Orono fought hard, but a combination of three hard-skated games in three days, (four games this week) four regular players off and some playing playing while ill, finally caught up with the boys. Although tiring, Orono never quit trying^and with 5:23 left in the game, John Buttigieg stole the puck at the Oakwood blue line and fed a pass to Stephen Shetler whose high shot broke the shutout. Orono regained some strength from this and pressed hard to come back once again. Chad Puk and Scott Hall in net had worked well against, stealing many shre goals from the opponents throughout the game to keep Orono close. Scott Hartwig, John Buttigieg and Sean McKenzie on defense cleared the Orono zone and covered the Oakwood blue line well while the forwards, Stephen Shetler, Jason Mercer, Scott Hen- tig, Cameron Tomkins, Mike Schoep and Adam Wallace pressed the attack and backchecked hard but, in the end, the spirit just . couldn't overcome the lead Oakwood had built up and the final score stayed Oakwood 3 and Orono 1. With this loss, Orono is out of the final playoff round to be between between Lakefield Blue and Oakwood, but I still think that they are the Champs of the League! Next step, on to a tournament in Port Perry on Wednesday, March 16th, then some exhibition games: Do your best, boys, keep up the team efjorts. Orono Juicers head into playoffs winning The Novice Juicers have put in some interesting ice time since our last write up. They ended up in first place in league play with 28 points. While waiting for the other teams to play off the Juicers hosted Newcastle Newcastle team and although they skated and played hard the United County Champs proved to be too strong for our kids, but it was a good experience experience for all. The score ended up 8 - 1 with Greg Bull getting the only goal assisted by Danny MacDonald and Adam Van Dam. On March 19th, we playfed our first play-off game in Orono against Millbrook #2, the Juicers played a strong game and won it 6 - 2. Orono had two super Atoms in the lineup, Mike Landers and Darryl Reid, but these two were in fact our best players as our veterans let us down. Mike scored the first goal from Darryl and both also picked up another assist. Chris Yeo picked up two goals with assists to Trevor Lomax before they both flew off to Florida for some rest and relaxation. relaxation. By this time coaches Reid and Partner probably thought the whole team needed some similar sort of transfusion considering their late game defensive lapses and the fact that any chance at the O.P.P. cup now seemed slim to say the least. One of the few bright spots was the goal scoring of transplanted defenseman, Jim Partner, who picked up his fourth goal in three games. On March 10th in Millbrook, Dustin Reid returned from the land of the sick to sink three goals and get Orono back on track. Cameron Esler took over Trevor's spot at centre and sparkled with some tremendous play making as he set up another transplanted defenseman, Paul Flintoff, for two goals. The final score was 5 - 1 as Orono once again allowed a late Millbrook goal with 1:33 remaining in the game -- talk about habitforming!! habitforming!! Millbrooks return to Orono on March 14th also saw the Orono team to early season standards. This time there was no defensive lapse, in fact two defensemen Craig Nemis and Brad Minnis were particularly particularly outstanding. Scott McAllister scored with 5 seconds left in the first period and then carried carried on into the next period with a second goal assisted by Craig Nemis. Paul Flintoff continued his goal scoring again assisted by Cameron Esler. Mike Landers then took over with two goals' sandwiched sandwiched around one by Dustin. Chad VanDam got a well deserved shut out and the team despite the loss of Trevor, Chris and Ryan Tomlinson, appeared ready for a final showdown with unfriendly rival, Omemee the next evening. • Omemee never knew what hit them! If they needed the number of the truck it was number 4, Dustin Reid, By the time the dust settled Dustin had scored 6 times and assisted on three other goals by Brad Minnis and Jim Partner. Dustin also finished the game in the dressing room after a little "dust- up" with one of the frustrated Omemee players. All in all an eventful eventful evening for the Orono captain ! More importantly, the Orono defense once again looked totally in command. Brent Gates has made the switch to defense with ease and along With Brad Minnis and Craig Nemis supplied Orono with the most ROCK SOLID three men tandem in the 'area. Both goaltenders, Chad VanDam and Jarret Aus, are playing with confidence confidence and authority. Hopefully, this bides well for our final play-off against Omemee. • , group Orono-Lockhart School weekly news report The Lockhart Public School students would like to welcome back all travellers from the March Break.
