Orono OMHA PeeWees at Maple tournament The Orono OMHA Peewees travelled to Maple for their final tournament of the season on March 27th. Orono faced a well balanced team from Wellesley for their first game. The play was wide open, up and down the ice with Orono capitalizing for the first score at the midway point of the first period. Scott McAllister fed a beautiful across the net pass to Dusty Reid who shot the puck in to make it 1-0 for Orono. The score remained 1-0 until late in the second period when the puck was fed back to Craig Nemis on the point, Craig blasted a slapshot at the net where Scott McAllister picked up the rebound and again passed to Dusty Reid who fired the puck home to ; bring the score to 2-0. Only a minute later Brent Gates stole the puck from a Wellesley player passed to Trevor Lomax who relayed to Cameron Esler and Cameron moved in, dek- ed the goalie and scored Orono's third goal. Wellesley notched their only goal with less than two minutes to go in the game to bring the final score to 3-1 for Orono. Strong offensive offensive drives and excellent backchecking by Dusty Reid earned him the MVP for the game. Orono met a tough team from AYR for their second matchup. This game* was even more exciting than the first as both teams had many excellent scoring opportunities opportunities only to be obbed by very steady gOaliending. Orono again drew first blood when Mike Landers (an Atom player called up) passed to Dusty Reid who passed to Scott McAllister and Scott fired a hard shot into the net. Mike Landers again figured in the second and final goal for Orono when he passed to Dusty Reid who blasted a low drive past a frozen goaltender, Orono won this game 2-0 earning Jarrett Aus a shutout and MVP selection for this game. This win moved the Ofono squad into the "A" Championship almost immediately after the AYR game and the lack of rest had its effect in the final game against a well rested Maple team. Orono scored the first goal early with Scott McAllister getting getting the goal on passes from Jim Partner and Brent Gates. Maple's fresh legs would become too much for Orono as the game wore on and they jumped into a lead they would not relinquish. Orono's final goal was scored by Chris Yeo on a pass ffom Craig Nemis. Maple won the game 11-2. Orono OMHA Peewees, despite this final ^loss, had an excellent season winning the league championship championship and OPP trophy. Another rarity During the winter of 1986-87 the Hawk Owl which spent the cold months in the area, the fifth line of Clarke east of Highway 115, was the rarity as far as birds were con sidered. This particular sighting brought bird watchers from all corners corners of the province and even from parts of the United States bordering the Great Lakes. On Friday of last week Bill Bun ting and,I picked out another rarity at the Garden Hill pond and according according Vo recording 8 this White Fronted Goose is more of a rarity in this particular a rea than was the Hawk Owl. The White Fronted Goose spends the summer in the Yukon and along the rim of the Artie and its flyway to the south is through the prairie provinces. It has distinctive markings which include a white front-face patch, a yellowish beak and legs and black bars across its belly. The goose is easily distinguished from the couple of hundred Canada Geese that are now resting at the pond. I do have two. books on the birds and sightings of birds in the Durham Region and a similar book on Prince Edward County. The first book is written by Jim Richards of Orono and does outline those birds ■ that breed in the area as well as all sightings that have been verified. Richards notes only two suc'h sightings of the White Fronted Goose which number compares with at least some 12 for the Hawk Owl. The first sighting was made away back in 1894 in Port Perry with the most recent in 1962 at the Oshawa Second Marsh. As for Prince Edward County two confirmed sightings have been recorded, one in 1937 at Wellington and another in 1972. This compares with five recordings of the Hawk Owl. Just to make sure of our sighting at Garden Hill I had phoned a qualified bjrder in Peterborough, who along with others, made a quick trip to Garden Hill to confirm that the goose was, indeed, a White Fronted Goose, a rarity for this area. We can't resist this Last week we were talking to Ron Locke, Newcastle, who is heading up the Newcastle Lions Chili International International Cook-off to be held at the Orono Fair Grounds in May.
