Outdoors." This 4H unit includes building fires, choosing a campsite, surviving safely, interacting with nature and going on an outing. Our first meeting took place on March 21st.with sixteen memebers present with our leaders Lois McLeod, Tom Barrie and Sally Barrie. We talked about the outdoors. What is the first thing that comes to mind? -Fresh air, sunshine, relaxation, excitement and challenge. Constructing fires safely and successfully successfully was also discussed. We learned about the different types of fires--teepee, log cabin, crisscross and star. . The 4H Club went outside on a chilly night to cook snacks over a warm fire. ' Members used coat hangers as skeweres to toast apples which were then peeled and rolled in sugar and cinnamon. The group also cooked S'rnore, marshmallows and chocolate chips on graham crackers. The second meeting took place on March 28th. Topics included included weather forecasting and setting up a campsite. Future meetings cover topics of first aid, photography and appreciation appreciation of our environment. Members are working on individual projects and "Learning to do by doing" which is the 4H motto. Whatever we choose to do yo can be sure the "Orono Nature Nuts" will be enjoying their encounter with the outdoors. Vicki McGdrvey enjoying Co-op experience with Orono Public School students. A couple of weeks ago I did an article about Stephanie Nemis and her co-op placement at the Apple Blossom Shop. This week is the continuation of the article featuring Clarke students in todays working society. Vicki McGarvey a Grade 12 student student at Clarke wanted experience before venturing off to college. She plans on focusing her career around Early Childhood Education and wants to make sure that she has made the correct decision. Vicki was able to get her experience experience through the Co-operative Education Program which placed her in suitable environment. She was given the opportunity to take Orono skaters with Whitby precision teams her co-op placement as a teacher's aid in a Senior Kindergarten class at Orono Public School. Here Vicki has gained the trust and responsibility responsibility of looking after tomorrows generation. There doesn't seem to be anything that she can say against her work place.. Vicki enjoys the cheery and colourful atmosphere of the classroom. She likes the idea that there are several cute and loveable children that look up to her. She said that "you never know what to expect they'll do or say next." Vicki now looks forward to going to school knowing that she goes to co-op in the afternoon, rather than hating it. By having this new responsibility she feels more mature and satisfied with herself. Vicki has not onlv Andrea Burnham (left) is a member of the Whitby Ice Fyr* Precision Skating Team which over the week-end were Gold medal winners winners in a competition held at Varsity arena in Toronto. The club has been most successful in competition and this year were the winners of the senior gold medal. Ashley is a member of the Whitby Whitby Ice Angels which team won Silver in the competiton but in a lower age bracket. Both Whitby teams will be skating at the Orono Carnival this Saturday with the Fyres in the evening evening and the Ice Angels in the afternoon. afternoon. received the trust from the teacher in charge, Miss David, but also the trust from the children. Vicki does various things such as taking charge over certain activities, joining in with games, sing-a-longs, and playing outside (with the children) throughout their outside time. The only problem that Vicki finds with her co-op placement is that she cannot gain extra hours of credit. And, when school is over she will deeply miss all of the children she has come to know over this semester. For anyone interested in this kind- of career Vicki has something important important to say, "Anyone going into Early Childhood Education should take a co-op course before deciding to go into the field. It is very challenging." Vicki is one of the many students' which has found, through co-op, the right career suited for her. Coop Coop is something different and is an experience worth going through for everyone.
