You will also see that they maximize that opportunity opportunity as well. Our secondary students are a talented and dedicated group of people. Most know what they want and work to achieve it. If you don't believe me take the time to talk to them. I urge you to visit a school this week. On Saturday, April 16, 1988 1 had the chance to visit the Northumberland Northumberland and Newcastle Regional Science Fair at Cobourg District Collegiate East. And what a fair it was! The day started at 9:00 a.m. with more than 100 judges reviewing the 330 entries. They had a difficult task selecting winners from the projects projects submitted. Students from kindergarten to the secondary level managed to show us their interest in science and a high degree of creativity as well. I would like- to congratulate the students from Orono-Lockhart, Newtonville, The Pines and Clarke who took the time to participate. You did an excellent job ' of representing the schools of Ward III at this board-wide event. I would also liké to express appreciation appreciation to the many teachers who worked for weeks encouraging their students with their science projects. The co-ordinators, Fiona White and Mike Roche are to be congratulated congratulated for making this event so special for the children. A job well done! The board approved the 1988 budget at the last meeting. The budget represents a lot of planning on the part of administration and king hours for all those involved especially Ron Sudds and the business staff. It's no easy task to pull together $90 million budget that will do all the things that need to be done. We don't expect to meet all of the system needs but this budget goes a long way to help. Again this year we were able to improve the funding of day school supplies and services. The board has significant building programs to fund as well. It seems to me we are beginning to get our buildings back into shape. This should help level out our maintenance costs down the road. Monies were included in the budget to improve the identification of the Clarke/Pines campus. In addition addition we hope to be able to pave the parking lot at those two schools and eliminate the hazard that everyone has been coping with for years. One expensive item in the budget is for Grade 13/OAC text books. The province has mandated that school boards must buy textbooks for all students - including Grade 13/OAC. For the first and second ■ semester this will cost our board almost one-half a million dollars. But the province will be contributing contributing only about one-third of that cost. The rest is up to the local taxpayer. I am opposed to this move by the province. With all of the demands on our budgets we can not afford this new undertaking. I do not believe it was necessary at this time. But we have no choice in the rrtat- (Continued page 10) HE-LP WANTED at NOONE'S RESTAURANT Highway 115 and 35 FULL and PART TIME COOKS and WAITRESSES Phone 623-6422 or 576-8837, Ask for Riek Affordable Dream Vacations!
