The week-end of May 27-29 will bring chili connoisseurs from far and wide to the 9th Annual Great Pine Ridge Chili Cook Off.' The three-day event is formerly known as the CHOO Chili Cook Off. While the name may have changed, ' organizers don't expect that to hurt the very popular yearly happenings. This year's cook off is being run • by the Newcastle Lions Club. Lions members Brett Rickard and Roy Watts report that the organizational process is well underway for the chili extravaganza. The Sirst cook-off was held nine years ago when the CHOO radio station got "accidentally involved" in the vent, according to Lorna Braid, community affairs and • public relations manager for the station. Since that time, the station has engineered the yearly chili cook off while at the same time looking for a ' service club or group interested in taking over the event. Enter the Newcastle Lions Club and the search is over. Although CHOO radio has given up the official sponsorship of the weekend they are by no means out of the cook off business. Mrs. Braid is working hand in hand with the Newcastle Lions Club and Orono Fairgrounds' management ,to promote promote the cook off and ensure its success. Mrs. Braid sees no reason why the event shouldn't attract four to five thousand people over the three days in May. "The event is people working together",. said Mrs. Braid. She estimates that it will take 400 volunteers to help out in all aspects of the cook off. The highlight of the weekend must surely be the chili cooking itself. The competition is tough and •rvune has a secret recipe. ■'u'Vnlav is devoted to making Texas style chili. In order to qualify for the competition the only thing that can show in the chili is the meat. Texas chili recipes don't contain contain any fillers (such as beans) arid the spices, onions and garlic give it the southern flavor that has won cook offs all across the country. On Sunday, the chili pots are filled filled with Canadian chili. Recipes can include just about any combinations. combinations. In order to qualify for the judging, Canadian chili cookers must use ground beef, beans and tomatoes. After that, the rest of the recipe is up to the imagination. There are four cooks per team and the top ten teams will, receive prizes for their culinary, efforts. Ron Locke manager of the Durham Central Agricultural Society (which looks after the, Orono Fairgrounds) explains that the judging is very serious business indeed. Even the judges have judges, as several monitors are present throughout the taste testing to ensure that ■ everything goes smoothly! * Mr. Locke also reports that planning planning for other events during the week-end is well underway. There will be horseshoes, activities for the children and plenty of entertainment. entertainment. Friday, May 27, will be an arrival and set up day for many out-of- town travellers.
