4-Orono Weekly Times, Wednesday, May 11, 1988 Letter To Editor Clarke Museum seeks Highway signage "The victimization of women by men appears to be directly related to our sexist society in which male supremacy is reinforced at the cost of the female members." Last year, would I have believed this statement? No! Do 1 now? Yes! Many times, people have asked me if the government considers the crime of child abuse a feminist problem. problem. I have always said.no. 1 was wrong and I admit this publicly. Look at the way our government is made up. Predominately men! Does the government believe child abuse is a feminist problem? Yes, you can tell by the lack of concern on the governments part to take positive action to better the care system for abused children and the rton-offending parent (usually the mother). Society's attitude a few years ago was, "what I don't see won't hurt me." Now there is a new awareness of the problem of child abuse. Society has matured, too bad our provincial government couldn't do the same. The Save Our Children Organization Organization has been fighting the provincial government to mandate long term child abuse therapy programs since September 1987. What progress have we made? We have managed to become „a thorn in the governments governments side! The Minister of Community and Social Services, John Sweeney, continuously continuously tells us there are several service 'agencies to help abused children. I'm not sure where this man is getting his information from becuase it's fact, that he is not getting getting his information from this community. community. I also do not believe he is getting this type of information from any other community. I recently attended a workshop ' put on by the Child Abuse Councils, Councils, Treatment Issues Committee on April 11th, 1988. Here's what we have to offer Essex County. There were approximately eighty reported cases of child abuse in 1987 of preschool children. On a good day no waiting lists, we were able to service 25 Vo of these children. In the Latency age category (6-12 years of age) we were able to service approximately 30% of the reported . cases. For adolescents, 13-16 years of age, it got better, we were able to service approximately 50%. What happens to the 75% of preschoolers, 70% of latency aged children and the 50% of adolescents that we could not service. They fell through the slats of an uncaring system! That will be put in the past as the Save Our Children Organization intends intends to see some major changes and right quickly. The government intends to see some major changes and right quickly. The government may have felt safely tucked away in their ivory towers, since the ones in Toronto have never had to deal with us face to face. But that will be changing very quickly. This organizations members have spent many hours and dollars (their own) trying to show the government the need for these changes. We are not going away until our job is done. If it isn't,Peterson had best enjoy his last three years as Premier. Every mémber of the provincial government has a copy of our petition petition for the public to read and sign if they wish to. If you don't find this petition available to you at your local M.P.P.'s office please write to: Save Our Children Organization 2645 Totten Avenue Windsor, Ontario N9B 1Y2 We will be happy to send you a copy as we need your help to mandate mandate long term child abuse therapy treatment programs. Our children depend on us to protect their health and welfare. Sincerely Arlene Rousseau - President Save Our Children Organization Metro should look after Its own garbage•- NDP A joint meeting of the NDP provincial provincial riding of Durham East and the new Federal Riding of Durham was held in R.R. 4, Port Perry last Wednesday with the NDP's environmental environmental critic, Ruth Grier, MPP for lakeshore as guest speaker. Ruth Grier discussed the problem of disposal of Metro Toronto's garbage especially as it might affect the Town of Newcastle and Durham Region as a whole. She stated categorically that Metro with the assistance of the Province must look after the bulk of its galbage. galbage. Incinerators are not the answer, their toxic ashes are an environmental environmental problem on their own and incinerators put off the day when recycling must be considered seriously. Recycling could take care of a substantial amount of the waste. She also pointed out that taxpayers have been subsidizing the manufacturers who have been paying paying nothing for the disposal of the elaborate packaging that is so commonplace commonplace today. Jim Wiseman of PACTE (Pickering-Ajax (Pickering-Ajax Citizens Together for the Environment) spoke about a new plastic bag that is biodegradable in 3 to 5 years. He is hoping that a major major supermarket chain will be adopting adopting these soon. The meeting elected delegates for the provincial convention convention in Thunder Bay in June. The Election Planning committee of the new federal riding of Durham discussed the organization of the coming election and possible candidates candidates for what, according to recent recent polls, is clearly a winnable riding for the New Democrats. Port Hope garbage costs increase Due to increased tipping costs at Laidlaw Landfill, north-west of Newtonville, Port Hope garbage costs are to increase from $64,000 for 1987 to $130,000 for the period from May to the end of December. Council members state their hands are tied as tipping fees have increased from $20.00 to $50.00 a tonne at the Laidlaw site. words like ball came out bell and Michael had become Michelle. It just wasn't my day for talking. I think the worst part was when I forgot a sentence and broke out laughing until tears were streaming down my face. All I kept thinking was, "this was not the kind of impression impression I had in' mind to make." but like I said it just happened. After it was over the teacher made ...well a kind of an insulting remark for my behalf. At least from my point of view, but maybe not yours. I was told by this person that he , could get me a job in real estate. Think about it real estate. At this point in time the other teacher told him that 1 would be next door taking the print journalism journalism course. I actually think that maybe I ended up impressing them after all. We later said our goodbyes goodbyes and wished each other good luck in future events. And get this! I was asked to pop in and visit the broadcasting room anytime that I felt like it. However, not to participate participate but to take notes. Mark Jackman, curator at the Clarke Museum and Archives, has submitted a letter to council of thé Town of Newcastle seeking their, assistance in gaining approval to erected signage along Highway 115 noting the existance of the Museum in Kirby. Jackman makes note that the Ministry of Transportation and Communication has turned aside such a request for Highway Signage for the Museum stating that the service service is not contained in specifications specifications for such signage. Jackman contends that the Museum does provide a service to the pûblic not unlike recreational opportunities and other features. He also notes that they do provide provide a picnic area and as weil an introduction introduction into Newcastle. He points out that a great number of the visitors are from other areas including including Toronto and Peterborough. Jackman calls the reasons for the denial,t "rubbish" and suggests the Ministry visit the site to examine the situation. The letter has been copied to other Ministries as well as Sam Cureatz, local M.P.P. Clarice student prepares for new venture in life Ball to Bell, and Michael to Michelle by Katrina Johnston It doesnt' seem too long ago when I first started High School, that first day was so impounded into into my memory that I will probably never forget it. It wasn't easy getting getting off that bus in the morning knowing or not knowing about what laid ahead. Many minor mishaps and embarrassments embarrassments occurred throughout the morning and into the afternoon. Things like going into the wronfg, assigned class or accidently falling up the stairs and hitting that on'e special someone. But these were alright, you know. These kind of things just happened and could be easily forgotten. Right! Well however, by the end of the day these minor incidents added up to become one by embarrassment. So much for first impressions! Not that first impressions really meant alot to me, anyways. It's just that now and again these incidents have been brought up during casual conversation. This does not bother me! I could laugh about them then and I can laugh even harder now. So far I have lasted approximately...well, approximately...well, almost four years at High School, and 1 have enjoyed every...Well almost every bit of it. I have decided that this would be my last Secondary School year. This however, has well you can say forced forced me into making mature and semi-sensible decisions. In the last 3 months 1 have picked out colleges, sent out applications and visited several community, colleges. colleges. Like just last week I found myself at Loyalist College attending seminars on print and broadcast journalism. This was very impressive! impressive! Too bad th6t I wasn't! The morning seminar just flew by and I didn't learn anything more than what I already knew. Which was fine with me - there's nothing like a good review. However, the afternoon seminar was nothing to joke about. I made an absolute "jerk" out of myself. This was my broadcast seminar and there was a tqtal o£ six of us, not.in- cluding the two teachers. We were given a story and asked to make it "into some sort of broadcast to go over the radio. At first I thought, "Wow! this is it, time to impress." If only I knew what I had gotten myself into. We were taken individually individually into the recording room to do our so called broadcast. I didn't have to wait too long t before it was my turn to go in, and 1 must admit I felt pretty sure of myself at that time. That was until I was given the cue to open my mouth up and talk. Usually I have no problem, problem, whatsoever in talking or rambling on, and on the one day that I could actually prove what a mouth I was - I blew it. The poor guy recording me must have really thought that 1 was losing it and probably asked himself - why me? Honest to goodness 1 didn't mean to make âll thosè mistakes^ Especially when I accidently hit the microphone off button. It just happened! happened!
