2-Orono Weekly Times, Wednesday, May 18, 1988 f <E>rotm aSBeefelp Eimes Second Class Mail Registration Number 000368 Published Every Wednesday at the office of Publication Main Street, Orono Roy C. Forrester, Editor More garbage debate The Town of Newcastle council is now considering a town-wide municipal garbage pick-up through tenders based on a uniform rate throughout the Town. At the present present time the Town using a private collecor picks-up refuse for 7,574 residential units and 245 commercial units. Through the town-wide service these pick-ups would increase increase by 5,007 residential units and by some 470 commercial commercial units. Although some members of council have come out in support for a town-wide service and a uniform rate others are holding back wanting to see the figures before they take the leap. At the present time those areas served by the Town are paying in the neighbourhood of some $110.00 a year while those in the rural areas are paying private contractors anywhere from $180.00 to $200.00 for pick-up. The difference difference being the distance between pick-ups. An overall uniform rate no doubt will raise those in the urban area and decrease the costs in the rural areas. This may or may not become an issue but it could become a thorny problem for those seeking re-election or to a position other than they hold now. There is always the chance of setting aside the concern of a whole group of electors no matter what side one takes. And it is an election yè&r. The Town at the present time b at the mercy of the private contractorhaving disbanded its own garbage collection collection system. It is not that the present system doesn't work well but its a matter of what control the town may have over costs. Garbage collection costs have jumped considerably considerably over the past year and especially since disposal rates have jumped from $18.00 a tonne to $50.00 a tonne. Certainly this is cause for contractor to boost their rates but! by just how much. The tipping charge has increased by some $32.00 a tonne} while in Orono garbge rates have increased from $65 .00 on average to $110.00 an increase of $45.00 a tonne and il is stated that this increase is due to the increase in tipping charges. ; But considering that a family of three produces just undei| a tonne of garbage a year and three to a household is more than average the cost increase for the home pickup of $45.00 is much more than the $35.00 increase in tipping charges, this is using the Orono average pickup increase which thd least in the five areas in which the town is involved involved in garbage pickup. ; This is just one aspect of the cost increase but those who s ;ek more information on council could well be on the right rack and surely there is a need for unit comparison with those municipalities that continue to operate their own garbage pick-up. , And further with the loss of industrial assessment, through Ihe uniform rate charge garbage costs take another jump. ¥■ ' Future debate on the issue should be interesting. Most of us housekeepers arc doing doing one thing and thinking of something else miles away. My caretaker in Hudson said he was up early and built up the kitchen fire and put on the tea kettle. A few minutes later he sçooped up a shovel full of coal, by this time the tea kettle was boiling. He took the lid off the; tea kettle and poured the coal into the tea kettle. My oriole didn't return on May 10th as in other years. He came this morning May 16th. On Sunday morning the choir sang, "This is the day that the Lord hath made." A fine new anthem that we enjoyed. Pen Portrait of Jesus The only pen picture known was a description written by one Publius Lentullus, President of Judea in the reign of Tiberius Caesar. He was writing to the Monarch of Rome and his description was found in the writing of Saint Anselm of Canterbury Canterbury in the eleventh Century. The following is the description. There appeared in these our days a man of great virture, named Jesùs Christ, who is living yet among us, and of the Gentile is accepted for, a prophet of truth, but his own disciples call Him the Son of God. He raiseth the dead, and cureth all manner of diseases. A man of stature somewhat tall and comely with very reverend countenance, such as beholders may love ; and fear. His hair is the colour of a chestnut full ripe, plain to His ears whence downward it is more orient and curling and waving about his shoulders; in the midst of his head is a seam or partition in his hair, after the manner of the Nazarites. ' His forehead plain and very delicate; His face without spot or wrinkle, beautiful with a lovely red; His nose and mouth so formed as nothing can be reprehended; His beard thickish; in colour like his hair, not very long, but forked; His look innocent and mature; His eyes grey, clear and quick. In reproving He is terrible; in admonishing admonishing courteous and fair spoken; pleasant in conversation mixed with gravity. It cannot be remembered that any have seen him laugh, butj many have seen him weep. In proportion :of body excellent; excellent; His hand's and arms are most delicate to behold. In speaking, speaking, very temperate, modest and wise. A man for His singular beauty, beauty, surpassing the children of men." In Kendql Church we have Salman's "Head of Christ." This picture was placed there in'"Loving memory" of Mrs. Chas Thompson and Mrs. Mary Luxon. In the column Newtoriville Alive, May 10th, 1 read, '"'Hoorahs! Once ' again, cheers go out to many who are talking up, looking about, and cleaning out their own backyards." Now it's not the backyards of Kendal Kendal that worry me'it's the southern entrance to Kendal-. I remember the southern entrance to Kendal in 1913 - before we went to the Prairie as one of the prettiest spots in Ontario and I have a picture to prove it; painted by Miss Dora Boyd. She was an English girl who decided to return to England. A picture 24" by 20" was too large to pack so she gave it to Fred Winn. Word would come over the phone that visitors had arrived at Starkville Station. Of course everyone on the telephone line listened and as Mrs. Lowe Senior said, "You'll have to wait till we get the horse dressed." Then we set out for Starkville in the horse and buggy. On the return from the station station we would wind slowly down, "Carson's Hill" till we came to the flowing water trough. There we would water "Lady." Then we wound down to cross'over the big mill stream. When we came to Jackson's mill pond "Lady" would be tied to a post and we would go in and watch that magic saw with a loud whine cut out the boards. Sometimes we walked across the dam. How beautiful the big mill pond with the dozens of saw logs bobbing around. Now today the burnt out charred ruin of a once beautiful home is an eyesore. When a barn burns a few weeks later there is a barn raising, when everyone helps. Perhaps with the owner's consent we could hold a demolition party when everyone would help to tear down the burnt out wreck. Even I could make sandwiches sandwiches to feed the workers. A surprise party was held at the the home of Mrs. Clifford Terrill on Sunday, May 15th in honour of her brother Mac's 65th birthday. About forty-five gathered for a pot- luck dinner at boon. Numerous humourous gifts were opened. There was a fine cake' decorated with square dancers accompanied with music by Graham Townsend. A good time was enjoyed by all.
