4-Orono Weekly Times, Wednesday, May 18,1988 SPORTS Orono Kinsmen Pee- Wees close out seaso n Saturday, March 18th s^w the Orono Kinsmen Peewees finally get to play a many times rescheduled game against the Bowmanville Major Major Atom Selects in Newcastle. Orono opened the game with two goals late in the first period. The first came at 4:15 when Cameron Tomkins got the puck to Mike Schoep. Mike's shot went off the post but Adam Wallace got the rebound rebound and scored on a quick shot. Stephen Shetler put Orono up by two when he stickhandled into the Bowmanville end, deked the goalie, and snapped a shot low to the corner corner of the net at 2:10'. In the second period, Orono really took over the play, - keeping the puck in the Bowmanville end for most of the time. At the 12:30 mark, Orono got their third goal. Seari McKenzie passed to Jason Mercer who broke in on the Bowmanville goalie and fired a quick shot that was stopped but Stephen Shetler scored on a shot from the rebound. Mike Schoep parted the next play with a pass to Adam Wallace who crossed the Bowmanville line and passed to Cameron Tomkins on the opposite wing and Cameron's low shot beat the Bowmanvile goalie at the 10:50 mark. A shift change brought another goal when Scott Hentig and Jason Mercer combined to get the puck to the Bowmanville slot area where Stephen Shetler fired through a crowd to score at 8:30 of the second second period. Orono added another late in the period when John But- tigieg carried the - puck out of Orono's end and passed to Jason Mercer. Jason crossed the blue-line and passed through the defense to a breaking Scott Hentig and Scott's shot went over the goalie's shoulder to the top corner at 1:10. Orono added added another early in the third period on an individual effort when Mike Schoep outfought the defender for the puck behind the Bowmanville net, circled the net and stuffed the puck under the goalie at 13:10. From this point on, Orono played defensively and held Bowmanville ' until late in the game when the Shutout was broken at the 1:30 mark and added another with :06 on the clock. Final score of the game Orono 7 and Bowmanville 2. A very good effort by all the boys against a fine opposition. Chad Puk and Scott Hall deserve lots of credit for their play in net, stopping- Bowmanville on many good scoring chances. Although not showing on the score sheet, Greg Hooper worked worked hard to assist in the victory. On Monday, March 21st, the Orono Kinsmen Peewees played an exhibition rematch against the Orono OMHA Atoms. Like the previous meeting of the two teams earlier in the year, this gam'e was to be a nail-biter with very close play throughout the game. The Peewees opened the scoring with :38 seconds left in the first period. On this play, Sean McKenzie blocked the puck at the blue line and fed a pass to Jason Mercer in the slot. Jason relayed the puck to Greg Hooper at the side of * the net and Greg lifted the puck over the diving goalie. The play went end-to-end with no goals scored by either team although there were several good chances at each end. The defense and goaltending goaltending was more effective than the offense offense at either end. Finally, the Alums got possession of the puck it fie: a bounce off the referee and Clarke High School News report scored with a high screened shot to tie the game with just 2:37 left in the game. Although both teams tried even harder to get the winning goal, the game ended in a 1 to 1 tie. Friday, March 25th saw the final game of the year for the Orono Kinsmen Peewees as they played a contact-style game against the 'Dykstra Deli' team from Bowmanville. Bowmanville. Both teams worked hard in the first period to get the advantage but it wasn't until late that the first goal was scored. Bowmanville jumped into a lead with two goals, one at 2:51 and another at 2:24. Orono came back before the period ended to cut the lead by one. John Buttigieg got the puck into the Bowmanville end and passed to Stephen Shetler at the side of the net. Stephen relayed to Jason Mercer in thé slot and Jason's quick shot beat the goalie. Bowmanville restored their two goal lead just 7 seconds later on a quick break to end the first period scoring. Both teams, played very well in the second period with Orono having several good chances but it was Bowmanville Bowmanville that got the only goal of the period at the 1:50 mark. The third period saw lots of action, both on offense and defense and the Orono goalies were called on to make some fine stops and shut out the Bowmanville players for the rest of the game. Orono struck at 9:03 when Stephen Shetler passed to . Dan Walters who circled the Bowmanville net and dumped the puck into the crease where Greg Hooper was able to poke it home. Lots of good action filled the rest of the period as Orono forced the play and finally scored again at 3:43. Greg Hooper passed to Stephen Shetler who raced up-ice to the Bowmanville end, centred a pass to the slot which Dan Walters tipped • in for the third Orono goal. This gaol brought both teams alive and the rest of the game was a tough struggle, but Bowmajtville held on despite excellent attempts by the Orono boys. Final score of the game was Bowmanville 4 and Orono 3. Good game, team, you can play any team, any style, and hold your own if you keep up your team spirit! The last "game" for the Orono Kinsmen Peewees for the 1987-1988 season took place on Saturday, March 26th when the boys tooks-on the Parent/Family. With some «changes in line-up, this was a close game (according to the boys), both sides claiming victory with no one keeping official score. This put a final ftin topping to a great season. Although the boys finished out of the playoffs, their record for the season was 1 very good. In,the 20 game regular season, the record was . 16 wins, no losses and 4 ties, outscoring the opposition 126 to 53. The 10 game playoffs saw a 5 win, 2 loss and 3 tie record, with 59 goals for and 34, against, while the 16 game tournament and exhibition record was 9 wins, 6 losses and 1 tie, and a 54 to 47 lead in goal scoring. Overall, the 46 game record is 30 wins, 8 losses and 8 ties, outscoring the other teams by 239 to 134. You have done very well, boys, a real class act! Thanks to you for your fine work and efforts over the season, boys, have a good summer, and good luck nek year for an even better time! Programs and certain events are starting to wind down while outside activities are just, beginning. On May 4th people in various trades came to Clarke to talk about their professions and how to become involved in those trades. This month new peer counsellors are being trained for next year by the student services office. Later this month Choices, a computer research program will cease until, next year. Clarke is holding this years annual annual Arts Day, Challenge '88. It will take place in the Clarke gymnasium on Tuesday, May 17th at 12:00 - 3:00. The purpose of this day is to bring together art students from various schools and their art work. Students have a chance to meet with and talk to each other and display their talents. The Clarke Bands are once again holding their spring Dessert Concert Concert on Wednesday, May 18th. Everyone is welcome to come. • ; t For those that are interested, thd-' Student Services bulletin board has various jobs that are available to students. A new restaurant on the south side of the 401 are asking for a number of students for various jobs. For those students that would still like to attend college starting in September, many community colleges colleges can accept more applications. Even though they have already sent out acceptances to Secondary School Students. Meanwhile, universities will be mailing out offers offers of Omissions on June 10th. Lastly! a Student Employment Centre' in Bowmanville is now open to help students in finding jobs. Changing Times! Changing Lives! Over 300 students from schools within The Northumberland and Newcastle Board of Education had the opportunity to explore a number of non-traditional careers on Tuesday at Durham College in Oshawa. The event, called Changing Times - Changing Lives, is organized organized by a volunteer group of teachers within The Northumberland and Newcastle Board of Education and will include sessions on aviation technology, civil engineering, electronic electronic assembly, and precision metal fabrication. Cheryl Brown, a member of the volunteer Northumberland and Newcastle Status of Women Committee, Committee, says the group picked these occupations because, "we wanted to get young women interested in areas that are truly non-traditional, and areas where the job opportunities opportunities and pay are good." "Many female students are still looking at traditional occupations," she says. "Statistics show that women will be in the work force for many years and all career alternatives aren't considered." considered."
