Newton ville Alive by: Peggy Mtillari Rodeo Days at Newtonville Public School Constable Peter Wraight talks with cyclists Blair Barton and Shannon Shannon Armstrong, grade One students at Newtonville Public School. Along with the greening grass, budding trees and colourful flower beds, spring naturally brings with it bikes. A couple of weeks ago the students eagerly took part in the school's spring Bicycle Rodeo. Kids were confident and ready to be questioned and have their bikes inspected by Durham Regional Police Constable Peter Wraight. Constable Wraight cheerfully talked talked with each student individually. Both would then go over carefully, his or her bike. Students bicycles were inspected for proper size, brakes, reflectors and all important safety features. A fprm was checked checked off accordingly by the Officer and each student was able to take it home to cover with parents. After these important preliminaries, students headed on to the obstacle course to lest their agility on their vehicles. Motivated moms were there ready and willing to coach each' through the course, tallying up scores for'each on performance on the bicycle safety sheets. Quite pleased with themselves, the students filed back into their classrooms once they had tackled all the balancing, turning, stopping .and flag-in-the-hole tasks out in the schoolyard. Constable Wraight enjoyed his morning at our school, summarizing., summarizing., "bicycle, safety is so Very critical and cannot be underestimated; most children here lacked rear reflectors and bells., some had difficulty handling their bike because they were either too big or too small for the rider," He also noted that headlights are a must if riding after dark. On May 18th, Durham Regional Council rejected the Laidlaw Corporation Corporation dump expansion proposal. It was originally rejected in 1983 due to the apparent same environmental environmental hazards. "The offer to expand was put 1 to Town Council in October of 1986.." said Mr. David Scott, President of the Clarke Constituents; Constituents; "It was dealt with and rejected rejected by Municipal Town Council, put ahead to the Regional Council. As with the municipality, Regional Council found the proposed site to be technically, geologically and environmentally environmentally unsafe for such a venture, unsuitable for expansion, and rejected the proposal," Mr. Scott added that he and the Committee anticipate Laidlaw Corporation Corporation to enter yet another submission submission for expansion', either to the Region again or directly to the Ministry of the Environment. The Newtonville Public School Parents' Liaison Committee met this past week for a final time before school let out the end of Junei Headed up by Vice Principal McCurdy and the year's Chairperson Chairperson Mrs. Susan Barton, the committee committee reviewed the year's activities and extremely successful events. Many commendable 'ac- ' complishments were listed. A number of terrific, beneficial purchases purchases were made during the school year too - new gym mats and gym benches, rainy day games, library ' books, special teaching aids, music texts and recorders, as well as the school hosting two absolutely wonderful live concerts, "Super- fudge" by the Eerwhon Theatre Troupe, and "New Kids on the Block" by Brad Halls and Paul Caldwell. The Christmas turkey lunch in the spirit of "Sharing" was not to be forgotten, as toys were purchased and donated to children who really needed them, in Sick Children's Hospital. A new committee executive was elected. Sincere thanks to all parents who "hung in there" time after time in support of the teachers, activities and events for the kids. Some successful events are mreiy to do encore performances, such as th.e craft classes and fashion show, but we will see in the fall. All parents are most welcomed to the school with any questions anytime. All are enthusiastically invited to drop in for all parents meetings, or to volunteer too! Pats on the back to the kids, teachers and parents for a year to brag about! Newton- ville's Berniece Milligan, Lena Clysdale and Phyllis Peck joined in on the trip. All enjoyed lunch, the 1 train tour and the safari's unique sights and sounds. -Bend over! Come on Newtonville pick up the rake and keep up the good work. Clean-up, you'll feel a lot better, your grass and your neighbours will love you more. -The Small Wonders Miniature Club of Bowmanville, is holding their 6th annual Miniature Exhibition Exhibition this coming May 28th and 29th at Cullen Gardens in Whitby. Our own Joanne Cleveland a member of the Miniature Club will be one of the exhibitors. An interesting interesting event worth looking into! -As our 16 year old sometimes says, as he throws his arms up in the air, "Whew, Parents, when will they grow up."
