Island downtown Orono A little bit of Coney Island came to downtown Orono Saturday when a tourist atmosphere took over with the promotion of the Outdoor Art Festival. A decided success with all intending artists exhibiting their various impressions through a number of mediums of art, and sculptures. It was heard a number of times "the village is like a tourist centre" and this was especially so from 10:30 to noon with all activities in full swing and the sidewalks jamm ed with pedestrians. The display continued until four in the afternoon afternoon and not only the Orono downtown being satisfied but so were the artists taking part. The outdoor cafes and cook-out were in evidence, the wondering minstrels were active and the young kids turned on their art creativity amazing spectators and of course the face painting. It was all part of a good venture, under sunny skies and the friendliest of atmosphere. Many cooks compete at Chili Cook-off The second chili cook-off to be held in Orono, sponsored by the Newcastle Lions Club met with the weather as torrid as some of the chili. The event ran for two days, Saturday and Sunday with plenty of musical entertainment and chili for the general public. Some 42 teams of cooks registered for the event, a greater number than last year with the majority1' majority 1 ' camping out in trailers and tents in the Orono fairgrounds. The Texas flag even waved in the hot Canadian breezes. The cooks participated in Texas chili, Canadian chili and in showmanship in preparation and there were numerous secret recipes. Events ran similar to last year but the crowd was down both Saturday and Sunday and the Lions Club is lookjng for some answers. Some 650 attended the Saturday evening dance which number compares compares with 1100 in 1987,. Music was supplied by "Miss Behavin", a band from Nashville, an all-girl band. Again for the main Sunday musical attraction attendance was down with music supplied by Mountain Country. Competition however in the chili events was as keen as ever with the Texas chili cook-off title going to The Travelling Road Show of San Angelo, Texas and their head cook, ' Debby Turner. They were the winners winners of two airline tickets to Las Vegas but returned the tickets to the Lions Club who \#ill raffle them off sometime in the future. The Canadian-style chili contest was won by Chattanooga Charlie of Markham. The showmanship award went to a Pickering team headed by Cathy Parkinson. It is understood that the Lions Club will be considering their future participation in the event sometime in the next couple of months.
