Those in attendance were able to converse with the two on views and the coming election sometime this fall or spring of 1989. Federal Associations in a 'wait and see' position Both federal Durham Riding Associations of the Progressive Conservatives and the Liberals seem to be playing a 'wait and see' procedure as to their nominations of a candidate for the coming federal election. Ivan Grose of Courtige and Doug Moffatt, Kendal have both announced announced that they will be liberal candidates as nominees while John Reid, Orono, announced his intention intention at a recent Newcastle-Clarke meeting to be a candidate for nomination for the Progressive Conservative Association. John Reid announced that he did have support from the Newcastle- 1 Clarke Association and the Bowmanville Association for his nomination. fL • Last week Irwin Hamilton, president president of the Durham P.C. Association Association confirmed that members of the association had contacted Dennis Timbrell asking if he would be interested interested seeking the P.C. nomination nomination in Durham. It is reported that Timbrell, a high-profile conservative conservative having held a, number of cabinet posts, didn't say 'no' nor. did he say 'yes'. John Reid states he has not yet filed his nomination papers and as yet a date for the nomination meeting has not been set to his knowledge. He said he still is considering considering his final decision as to whether he will be a candidate or not. It has been rumored that as many as twelve P.C riding associations are seeking Dennis Timbrell as a possible candidate in their particular particular riding. The Durham Liberal Association had intended to call their nomination nomination meeting for mid June but it was postponed to a possible date of August 11th. It was rumored at the time that the postponement was to allow time for a decision for a possible entry of the race by Gary Herrema, chairman chairman of the Region of Durham. Herrema at the time was attending a convention in Vancouver.' No declaration has come from the Regional chairman to this point. In the meantime both urose anu Moffatt are' organizing for the liberal nomination meeting. Around the Board with Bob Willsher , 1 attended the annual convention of the Ontario. Public School Trustees Association in North Bay' on June 3,4 and 5. This marks the 20th year of OPSTA and. their service service to Public Education in Ontario. Ontario. Most will not really be familiar with OPSTA. Our association is one of the major watch 'dogs over public education. The association during the 2.0 years has accomplished accomplished much tp improve public education. But times have changed. There are • three major public. school trustee associations in Ontario: i Association of Large School Boards of Ontario (ALSBO), Northern Ontario Ontario School Trustee Association (NOSTA) a OPSTA. At the convention convention we approved a motion to join with ALSBO and NOSTA to form one Trustee Association for Peter Trueman compares free press It is interesting (0 note that in the battle for the hearts and minds of the third world, it is the Soviet model of what capitalists and communists communists alike call a free press that seems to prevail. I was reminded in a recently published lecture by Larry Black, the Director of the Institute of Soviet and East European Studies i at Carleton University, that although Soviet citizens are guaranteed freedom of the press in Article 50 of the new Constitution, it is with the proviso that the primary purpose of the press is to enhance socialism, to educate, and to lead to shape public opinion. Soviet journalists are not expected to be impartial observers, but active participants in the struggle to promote promote the ideals of the state. I could never work in such a system, for reasons that will be obvious obvious to anyone who has ever listened listened to me, but I confess to being more tolerant of the idea that 1 used to be. And Lam at least prepared to listen when the argument is made that the Soviet Media philosophy might be more realistic for developing developing nations, particularly in the early stages. It is really not terribly different than the journalistic credo adopted by western nations during the Second Second World War. War correspondents correspondents wore their countries' uniforms, took the news that was dished out to the them, put up with censorship and other democratic limitations, and at least for the duration, saw nothing improper in the fact that they were loyal citizens first and newsmen second. The Soviet journalist has tended Public Education in Ontario. This, in my opinion, is a very important step for the future of public education education in Ontario Government in Ontario Ontario is influenced a great deal by the various lobby groups. In the past public education spoke 3 times through the 3 associations. This was not always from the same position. This, in turn, lessened our effectiveness effectiveness in getting Queen's Park to listen. Now when we address an issue with Queen's Park it will be with one clear and unified voice. Public education has to benefit. At the Education Committee on June 13 a recommendation to ban corporal punishment in our schools was to be considered. As this column column was written prior to that meeting 1 cannot say if it was approved. approved. I hope so. It seems to me that corporal punishment is from the dark ages. to be a citizen period. Professor Black points out jhat as early as 1905, in discussing freedom of the press, Lenin maintained that all literature should be party literature x and used as a weapon in the class struggle. Lenin insisted that advocates advocates of absolute freedom of the press were hypocrites, because they never practiced such principles themselves. That's not true, today. Given a reasonably tolerant publisher or network owner, a commentator in this country can write and say just about anything he or she likes, within the confines of the laws of libel and the limitations of the commentator's commentator's own intestinal fortitude. There is no need for a mature adult to beat a child to convince him or her that their behavior needs to he changed. Given the knowledge that educators possess there are more effective, effective, and positive, forms of obtaining obtaining a change in a child's behavior. By the way, from September 1986 to April 30, 1988 the strap was only used on one occasion occasion in our board. With any luck the Clarke High School/Pines Senior Public School parking lot should be paved this summer. Tenders have been galled and should go to the board meeting on June 23 for approval. I know that students and staff will be pleas- . ed to see an end to the mess currently currently encountered in the parking area. I had the pleasure of attending the Clarke High School Band Parents Annual Dinner on June " 6th. The evening was enjoyable and very entertaining. It is great to see parents who care about their students and are not afraid to get involved. The support provided goes a long way to enhancing the quality of the Clarke Music program. program. Congratulations to those involved involved in organizing the dinner. The quality of the music program has improved a great deal over the last 2-3 years. Most of the credit goes to the very fine music teacher at Clarke, Mr. Nicholas. It appears to me Mr. Nicholas has instilled a love of music in all those he teaches. The program ■ demands a commitment from the student but the returns are generous. It's great to see a well run program like the one at Clarke. Congratulations "Mr. Nick". It appears there is significant reaction to the Radwanski Report. As the details are examined and the issues understood there is less support support for Mr. Radwanski's philosophy on education. And so it should be. His lack of in-depth analysis of the needs of children and the focus on what appears to be his own personal preference leads one to give his report little credibility. credibility. Chris Ward, Minister of Education, Education, said the Radwanski Report will not be considered, in isolation, but grouped wi.th other 'studies. Hopefully it will be filed in the circular circular basket. It's that time of the year - examination examination time. 1 wish all'the hard working students the very best Op their exams. I hope that you give it your best and then enjoy the summer summer months ahead.
