Peter Trueman expresses NDP disappointment One of the many disappointments disappointments about the impending election , campaign is the NDP's decision to soft pedal if not completely abandon abandon its announced policy of withdrawing from NATO. I'm not sure whether the official NDP policy is right or wrong, but I am absolutely certain that the Canadian role in this aging alliance ought to be reassessed in a major way before the organization's 40th birthday next Spring. The world has changed somewhat since the post war period, and it's not unreasonable to suspect that an organization which came into being then should now be updated or even replaced. The NDP's loss of nerve means that on this issue our three main parties are again falling all over each other in the political centre. The major argument between them on military strategy will be over Defence Minister Perrin Beatty's nuclear-powered submarines. I'm not sure that meaningful T-batC of any kind is still possible in ' ari age of ten second clips, disembodied disembodied questions, and shouted slogans, but it's evident we're not going to have one about NATO or Canada's participation in it, The Economist Magazine recently recently made an unusually witless suggestion suggestion about Canadian defence, in a condescending piece on our undersea aspirations. I agree that some if not all of the nuclear .U-boat money might be put to better better use, but what The "Economist suggests as an alternative is archaic. The magazine wants us to put a division or two in Central Europe instead of what it calls "the lonely little brigade" we have there now. That idea runs against the grain of the economic .and political realties of the 1980's, and perhaps the military realities as well. And coincidentally, it is completely out of step with a report just completed by a group qf NATO legislators and defence experts representing both the Nofth American and the European European membership. According to an Associated Press Junior kindergarten rated highly in survey to the Editor Durham Recycling Centre Too Close for Comfort Dear Parents: The staff of Durham Recycling Centre Inc. would like to express our gratitude to all residents for their support and understanding over the past hectic months of our new blue box recycling program. Our drivers would like to remind everyone once again that children must be educated in the dangers of getting too close to a large truck. Two of our drivers recently had- very close calls. In one case a driver lost sight of â small boy while he was emptying a blue box. To be on the safe side the driver walked around his truck. He found the boy sitting under, the front bumper looking up at the engine. The driver was so shaken by what could have happened had he just driven away without the last check he had to return to the shop almost afraid to drive. In the other case, a driver felt uncomfortable about the children standing around his truck so he took a walk to the back. Here he found a youngster with his arm inside inside the tail light frame. Both incidents could have had disasterous results had our drivers not exercised extra caution. Parents, our drivers are professionals professionals with an important job to do as safely and carefully as possible. Please teach your children to stay clear of our collection vehicles. Our children are our future and we cannot cannot afford to lose one. Sincerely, Greg Loyst Collection Lead Hand story from Brussels, the group is recommending that more of NATO's financial and military burden be shifted to Europe. The report, which was released officially in Washington recently, also suggests suggests that NATO needs a new political mandate to reflect fundamental fundamental changes in the relationship relationship between Western Europe and the United States, and adds that it is time for a new division of military responsibility as well. Clearly, the report raises a number of long overdue questions that could do with a thorough examination examination on both sides of the Atlantic, by politicians and by editorial boards as well. A recently released survey of the Junior Kindergarten program in the Northumberland and Newcastle Board of Education shows a high degree of support for the program from parents who have enrolled their -, children in the classes. Teachers, teacher assistants, and principals who were also surveyed rated the program as successful, according according to the Board's Junior Kindergarten Development Committee. Committee. Conducted after the program had been in operation for one year, the survey results were presented to the Board's Education Committee Monday night. Surveyed at random, random, 81 percent of parents with children in the program saicTfhèÿ would rate it as "excellent", while 34 percent felt it was "good". Commenting on teacher-pupil ratios, 44 percent felt they were "excellent", while 34 percent said they were "good". "I personally feel that JK is good because the program really taught my daughter how to open up, how to get along with other children, and the basics of future education", one parent wrote. Many parents who added comments comments to the survey pointed to the development of social skills as one of the main bènefits of the program. program. Grant Yeo, Superintendent of Instruction Instruction (Program)', says the Board initiated the survey "to examine every issue we could think of ... the issues we thought we would have to address." The survey includes questions questions on school equipment and space, home visits, delayed entry, parent-teacher involvement, community community acceptance, professional development and curriculum. The response to the survey was higher than in normal surveys, the Committee Committee states in the report. As a result of the survey, the Board has developed "an implementation implementation process" which en- surds consistency in the programs throughout the Board, says Yeo who adds that "eight boards have since come down to study our implementation implementation process. Criticisms of the program have been or will be addressed", he says. The Junior Kindergarten program program was implemented in 1986 because "we felt we could provide a quality program and because there was a need", says Yeo. "There is a lot of research that shows early primary programs positively affect children", he says. A Board document on the program program says Junior Kindergarten can provide an enriched environment for students in isolated situations, establish positive work habits, encourage encourage problem solving and language development, and help children develop a positive self- image.
