For the second consecutive year, students at The Pines Senior Public School have raised over $3,300.00 for heart and stroke research by participating in the Jump Rope For Heart Program sponsored by the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Ontario. 190 Students participated in the 2 hour event, taking turns skipping in teams of six. Enormous support from the local community was provided provided through pledges collected by the students. As well, oranges were contributed by the I.G.A. stores,in Orono and Newcastle, and Gatorade by the Quaker Oats Company Company of Canada. Staff co-ordinator Carolyn Wilson was assisted by two Grade 13 Physical Education students from Clarke High School, Tony Vanrenen and Chris Pedias, whose spirit and administrative competence competence made the event a highlight of the school spirit at The Pines this year. Student Council President Jim Partner led the students with his enthusiasm enthusiasm and skipping expertise, and his team was victorious in the informal "most creative skipping" category. Held during Education Week to emphasize the school's links with the community, Jump Rope for Heart serves to instil the value of community service and responsibility responsibility in the students. Sent to jail for a three year term Judge Donald Lawson of the Whitby district court sentenced Sean LaRose, 23, to a three year penitentiary term for a single car accident accident which killed LaRose's 18 year old sister and Rhonda Williamson, Williamson, 17. On June 24, The Pines awards Award of a contract for resurfacing on Hwy 401 Ontario Transportation Minister Ed Fulton has announced the award of a contract for resurfacing on Highway 401 in Port Hope district. ' The contract is for resurfacing on Highway 401 from Highway 35/115 easterly at various locations to Highway 28, Port Elope. This resurfacing project on Highway 401 from Highway 35/115 to Highway 28 is undertaken to restore the existing pavement. The work will result in improved driving conditions and reduced maintenance requirements through the. area. Work on the project is scheduled 1 to begin in June, 1988 with completion completion set for late summer, 1988.
