The intent of the program is to stimulate job and investment opportunities and create economic growth through appropriate appropriate forms of development. development. Although the focus of the program is upon northern Ontario, Ontario, the philosophy of using Crown land as a tool for economic development applies province wide. At the present time, six primary development areas have been designated across the province. These areas include Ear Falls, Ignace, Atikokan," Wawa, the Detour Lake/ Abitibi Corridor and Whitney. These areas will be investigated investigated for development opportunities opportunities and investment. Sqme of the development plans which the .Ministry has received ' and reviewed include cottaging, small hydro electric facilities, aquaculture, peat and water based, tourism and recreation plans. While this Ministry is exam- ing these'land uses, it is fully expected expected that other ideas will come forward for review. PIKE THREAT Dave Maraldo, Kawartha Lakes Fisheries Biologist There have been persistent reports of finding northern pike in Canal Lake in Victoria County. County. This is cause for concern since northern pike have not been found in the Kawartha Lakes. Biologists believe one of the reasons the Kawartha Lakes maintain excellent muskellunge populations is because there are no pike. When pike invade new - waters they can seriously affect existing fish stocks, particularly muskellunge. In April, Ministry of Natural Resources staff conducted a. netting study on Canal Lake and confirmed that pike were well established. Immediately, netting was shifted to Mitchell Lake, the next Lake upstream, to determine if pike had invaded it as well. The Kirkfield Liftlock presents a formidable but not impossible barrier to the movement movement of pike from Canal to Mitchell Mitchell Lake. The netting in Mitchell Mitchell Lake did not catch any pike. Although a good sign, this cannot be considered conclusive and further studies on Mitchell are planned. Anyone catching a northern pike from Mitchell or Balsam Lake should keep it and notify the Ministry of Natural Resources in Lindsa'y at (705) 324-6121 or Zenith 73000. Pike or any other species should never be released into another body of water. MERVYN B.
