Martin calls for integrity in government at Ottawa Paul Martin Jr., the liberal candidate for the federal riding of Lasalle-Çmard, Quebec, was the guest speaker at a 'Thank You Canada' barbeque given oy Bev and Ivan Grose in Courtice Sunday afternoon. Martin, the son of Paul Martin, Martin, a former cabinet member of the former liberal government in Ottawa took as his theme "Why I am a liberal" in a short address to some one hundred in attendance. The speaker said the liberals were the only ones with a vision of where to take Canada. He said it was not a matter of where Canada had been but that it was jparamount where Canada was going in the future to the betterment betterment of all Canadians. He said Canada had changed and would change further and that a liberal government in Ottawa Ottawa would be able to handle the change and to anticipate the coming changes. tytartin made the point that the thrçat to Canada or the world was not nuclear war today today but rather the threat was the environment. Here he pointed out that the conservatives under Brian Mulroney were spending heavily on the military while disregarding the environment. Martin was also critical of the conservatives in that they were treating AIDS as a disease and the handicapped as if they did not exist. "It is a changing time and we must be prepared for this change", he said. "I believe the next five years are most important to this country, country, it is a time when the future of the country will be determined", determined", he said. Martin spoke of political will and said it would be political will that would determine whether Meech Lake was either good or bad for the country. "We cannot have eleven equal governments if Canada is to survive", he said. He also tied the success of Free Trade to > political will and said the conservative conservative lacked the political will to handle the Free Trade issue. He referred to recent incidents incidents that he claimed showed Canada bending to the U.S. Martin said it was a matter of whether Canada would be one of the dominate leading countries countries or end up like Argentina. Martin claimed the issue was not Free Trade or Meech Lake but rather integrity. "When I speak of integrity I'm not talking talking about scandals", said Martin. Martin. He said the conservatives had not shown integrity in that they had not communicated with Canadians either with Meech Lake or the Free Trade issue. He mentioned that the U.S. will closely scrutinize our subsidies and those receiving such subsidies subsidies will not be able to export freely to the U.S. He also said that water was a part of the Free Trade negotiations and that Canada would lose control over Canadian waters. He made the point that due to the 'greenhouse effect' Saskatchewan Saskatchewan would be asking for water diversions to that province province in the future and that this would lead to Canadian water diversion to the adjoining states in the United States. Canada could not say 'No' to the U.S. under the terms of the Free Trade deal, he said. Martin also contended that Canada could not get out of the agreement in a six month period. He claimed that the Tories had not been telling the truth over either Meech Lake or Free Trade and mat it was a lack of integrity on their part. Martin stated that Canada was made up of a multi-culturai society which was not duplicated anywhere else in the world, a fact, he said we should be most proud of. "Surely Canada deserves better better in Ottawa", he said, "and the Liberals are the party with vision and integrity". Martin had flown into Oshawa from Montreal for the Ivan and Bev Grose event leaving leaving to return to Montreal in the mid afternoon.
