i Over four hundred attend liberal nomination Moffatt comes off winner with the Durham liberals Doug Moffatt of Clarke Township was elected on Thursday evening to represent the Durham- riding liberals in the next federal election, at a nomination meeting in Port Perry. 319 delegates attending the meeting from the riding made their choice between Doug Moffatt and Ivan Grose of Courtice. The result of the vote was not announced. . Well over four hundred were in attendance attendance for the meeting. In making their choice the liberals were the first to elect their candidate for the next election. Neither the Conservatives nor the New Democrats have announced nomination meetings. In addressing the meeting Moffatt Moffatt said he cared about Canada and the riding and wanted to make sure that the first elected representative for the new Durham riding was a liberal. < Moffatt who had served in the Ontario Legislature from 1975 to 1977 as a NDP MPP assured the audience audience that he was a liberal, his friends were liberals and that his ideals were liberal. He said many have been asking, "Why did he change?". The question question he said is better than one of, "Who is he?" He stated that he left the NDP because he disagreed with the NDP position on NATO and wanting to withdraw from the organization. He also said he was opposed to the issue of wanting the government to be solely the engine of progress and development. It came as no surprise to many, that Metro Public Works commit- teeron Friday of last week put off making a decision on development " of a proposed Metro landfill site in Scarborough, just north of the Metro Zoo and ajong the west border of. Pickering. The Metro committee, considered a Public Works-staff report recommending recommending the Scarborough site over other sites including onb in Newcastle Newcastle between Ontârio Hydro and Darlington Park 'on the south side of highway 401. The issue will be considered again by the Metro committee on September 8th when additional information information is to be provided to the committee. , . , The Metro politicians told their staff to continue further studies on both the Newcastle and the Scarborough Scarborough sites. They also asked consideration consideration and reports on expanding . the present Keele Valley site in Maple and as well the possibility of shipping garbage north into a sparse populated area by train. Superior Sand and Gravel which owns land next to the Keele Valley site said by expanding onto their lands the dump could accommodate a further 11,7 million tonnes of garbage. garbage. The firm said this would negate the use of the Scarborough site and the Newcastle site. Mayor Winters of the Town of Newcastle commended the report in that it had eliminated the use of Newcastle land. Gary Herrema, chairman of the Region of Durham supported Winter's view and further stated that the Region would be recycling 25 percent of its waste in the next four years. Metro officials stated that it was not the concern of citizens that they had eliminated the use of the N1 site in Newcastle. M.etro lawyer, Harry Poch stated there were two main reasons the Newcastle site had been eliminated. The lands earmarked for the dump site was .in private and corporate ownership who would seek high prices if. the land was to be expropriated. expropriated. LE WATER The Public Works Department of the Region of Durham are to receive an updated report as to the cost of water installation in Newtonville at. their next meeting on Apgust 30th.'A recent estimate has indicated a rise in cost of the installation from a figure of $2.7 million to $3.6 million. 'The Region's consultants are to issue the new report. According to the Regional Public works approval has been obtained from the province to pay sixty percent of the cost and a ver- . bal approval has also been receieved for'the additional estimates and support from the province. With approval from Public Works to proceed the matter will then be dealt with by Regional council on September 7th.
