4-<>rono Weekly limes, Wednesday, August 17, 19*8 ORTS Orono Soccer PeeWees look for scoring touch Orono Peewees, who started the season so well have fallen on hard times in the last two weeks. First, they list a hard fought 5-3 contest to a very strong Hampton side on July 21st and then fell 2-1 to Tyrone at home on July 28th. Basically they have not been able to take advantage advantage of scoring chances to support excellent defensive work and strong goaltending by Cameron Esler. The Hampton squad has such great size, particularly on defense, that our forwards were somewhat intimidated in front of their net. Thus crosses from the wing were easily 'gobbled up' by defensemen as our forwards stood back. The only forwards to put the ball in the net in this game were .Scott McAllister and Scott Hentig with two. However, we were not at full strength for this game against an excellent excellent opponent so credit should be given to all the players for putting out such a good effort. Scott Hall 'came to play' despite a sore hip and when he was not on the field played a strong leadership role on the sidelines. Sean McKenzie played particularly well on defense along with an injured Shellie Nowak arid Todd Craves. Evan Davies ran miles from his 'rover' position taking taking most of the kicks and the throw ins. This was a good effort despite the loss. The game against Tyrone was another matter. The Orono team had field advantage but simply could not plant the ball in the net. Some uneven refereeing compounded compounded the problem but the old story of the lack of a finishing touch cost us the game. Tyrone used their oppor- tunties to blast much more difficult shots at our goalie, Cameron Esler, who managed to get his body in front of all but two. Richard Vernon Vernon was our only scorer although Dart Walters and the Bates brothers, Brendan and Tyler played very strong games at half. Meghan Davies on defense stopped several Tyrone rushes by playing very intelligently. intelligently. Special thanks goes to Greg Hooper for rushing back from holidays to lend support on the front line. A little more determination determination coupled with fewer 'hard lines' will get us back to our winning winning ways.
