4-Orono Weekly Times, Wednesday, September 28, 1988 SPORTS 1988 Soccer results for the Orono PeeWees Pee Wee Blues come close in final encounter The Orono Peewees had a thoroughly enjoyable 1988 season. Although the team had only 13 players we never had to default a game or play short-handed. This proves that the players were committed, committed, and it also means the parents should be congratulated for their efforts in getting the players to the games. Even though the playoffs playoffs did not bring victory success should not be measured solely by that criteria. Shellie Nowak and Sean McKenzie McKenzie had a good time on defense as well as on the sidelines where they staged a water fight after each game. Meghan Davies often substituted on the backline when our numbers were down and even "filled in" for Shellie during the "drenchings" on the sidelines. Cameron Esler enjoyed an outstanding year in goal aided at times by Todd Graves and Greg Hooper despite the fact that they both indicated their 'displeasure' with that position, The Bates brothers, Brendan and Tyler, played every position with enthusiasm enthusiasm and without complaint. Dan Walters and Evan Davies used their abundant energy to rove over Last night, the final chapter was written in a story that began late this spring. Oh, it's not high drama for most of us., in fact not many were even aware that it was happening. But, sometime in May, a group of eighteen eighteen young men and ■ women gathered together on a field behind the school in Orono and . loosely formed a team called "The Orono Atoms". Their purpose was the game of soccer - to learn, to practice, practice, to play, and, with luck, to win. From the beginning, the impressive impressive thing about this group of nine and ten-year-olds wasn't so much their soccer skills but their eagerness to please. To a person, these youngsters were well- mannered and well-spoken, with lit- • tie of the school-yard behaviour that most of us would expect. They practiced with a vision of making themselves into better playens. They applied themselves to sportman- ship. And they responded to almost everything asked çf them which, in the end, helped them gain those skills they needed. , The story of their season - fourteen fourteen garnes in all - was one of constant constant improvement. Game alter game, the team grew more cohesive and gradually learned one of the great lessons/of soccer..that it is a team sport a/id that, as such, games are won and lost based on how much a player can rely on and trust liis or her teammates. This is a more grown-up idea than most people realize. The concept of "being there" for others is something this world needs more of. But " be there" this team was; and at the end of the regular season, they finished with a record of eleven wins and three losses - a standing of second in their division. They continued into the first the entire field. Forwards Scott Hentig, Scott McAllister and Scott Hall make it easy for coach McAllister to get the attention of the frontline with one well-placed word. Pontypool import Richard Vernon was outstanding until he broke his leg in an All-Star game, and the whole team would like to wish Richard a speedy recovery. Ah yes, the play-offs! Orono opened successfully with a 15-0 drubbing of Manvers. Scott McAllister (4), Cameron Esler (2), Richard Vernon (2), Evan Davies (2), Dan Walters (2), Scott Hentig, Tyler Bates and Greg Hooper all shared in spoils of that drubbing. However, a week later Bowman- ville, with the help of some weak officiating, officiating, handed our "lads and lassies" a 5-2 defeat. "Hard lines" as coach McAllister would say. Finally, old nemesis, Newcastle, finished Orono"s hopes with a 5-1 triumph, although our team fought doggedly to the end even scoring the final goal. Once again the coaches would like to thank the parents and players for their interest and enthusiasm. enthusiasm. Hopefully, a good time was had by all. round of the playoffs and came away with resounding victories. What now loomed before them was the Division Final against the team that finished first. It's an often used cliche that every game has to have a winner and a loser. Well in score at least, the Orono Atoms lost - three to two. But on the soccer field last week, this group of eighteen young people played beyond themselves. They played with an intensity rarely seen even in professional athletes. They played with a'desire that would have every Orono citizen proud to call them their children. So you see, the ending truly is bittersweet. bittersweet. 'Bitter with the agony of ' running so hard you have no breath left with the' pain other players' spikes raking down your ankles; with the tears of anger and anguish for a dream that hasn't come true. ■ The sweetness is harder to uncover.' It lies in the future. For without realizing it, what every one of these young men and women have learned learned (even while at play) is to set a goal, to keep their heads up and to go after it with their very best ef- Qn September 10th the Orono Pee Wee Blues baseball team went to Welcome Park to compete in the consolation finals for their league. Earlier in the week they had defeated the Port Hope team handily, handily, 12 to 2. Saturday morning they won their first two games; 4 to 3 over a strong Garden Hill team and 16 to 4 over Welcome, Orono Skating Club News The week of October 2nd marks the beginning of the 1988-89 skating season at the Orono Figure Skating Club. The Seniors will start Sunday, Sunday, Intermediates and Can- figureskate on Monday and the Juniors in Canskate on Tuesday. Welcome to all old and new members. We have a large group starting in the Canskate program this year. For many it will be their first experience experience with skating. We suggest that the children be dressed warmly, i.e. snowsuit, mitts and hat. Also have, them use the washroom before going on the ice. For their protection protection a helmet is a good idea and we also ask that skate guards be worn whenever skaters are not on the ice. This will protect the sharpening on the blade and also the floors. Skates should fit properly and provide support. support. Our professional coaches returning returning this season are Allysoh Cowan, Ann Trudel, and Stephanie Hood. Welcome to new coaches Susan En-, nis and Barbara Lehming. The Canskate program could not run successfully without the help of our Junior Coaches and assistant Junior Coaches. These are unpaid volunteer skaters who are qualified through their own level ot skating, attending a course and writing an exam. They deserve the support of parents and skaters. We wish all a successful and enjoyable enjoyable skating season. Lynne Lemieux fort. And to think these high ideals can be learned on a patch of grass kicking a ball around!
