>m> Weekly Times. Wednesday.. September 28, 1988 Newt on ville Alive Thanlq you again to landowners and workers who made beautiful short order of the much-publicized ' dumpy property along Hwy. 2 that has for a long time been the worst by Peggy Mullan by Peggy Mullan No religion. No polilics. There is probably an unwritten rule in writing a "safe" column. Do not become too opinionated or over zealous on either cause. Thinking on the Federal political level usually makes me ill. 1 Enough said about that. Sunday School never hurt anyone. As a matter of fact it might have done some of us good, shown us compassion and given us more understanding perhaps. ■ Unlike politics, religion is a very personal thing. A person's beliefs, of whatever kind, from whàtever source and for whatever reasons are theirs and theirs alone. Sitting in a building or church faithfully once a week, does not a Christian make... A while back in tiny, beautiful old church by the river, a very special wedding took place. For many réasons undoubtedly, in the eyes of God. Beforehand, the bride and groom met with the minister for the first time. The trio got along famously right from the start; they got to know one another and discussed nuptuals. As the afternoon meeting drew to a pleasant end, the reverend brought up an odd complaint about the intended wedding, that he felt should be known to them..Word of tltrpmposea wearling-lracFteîtctrea a certain prominent individual in the village. She was adament that no "strangers" were getting married married in her church. The kindly minister surely felt a little embarrassed to think that a staunch member of his congregation, congregation, who attended church "religiously" every Sunday would actually leave her heart in her pew, along with all else holy and good, to collect dust until the following Sunday. Sunday. There was no problem. As the couple departed, shaking hands with the minister, the bride (okay, it was me..) asked, "Who's church is it anyway, "Miss Smith's or God's!" It is out of character for me to talk religion. In a small community particularly, the church does play a bigger role. As Newton ville and surrounding surrounding communities grow and welcome younger families, 1 hope the church will become, or remain an open place lor all, whenever needed or wanted, without prejudice prejudice or pressure; that all "Miss' Smith's" who sit in their seats "faithfully" every Sunday morning, morning, shape up and get their act together and remember eac.h and everyday what they are there for in the first place. Our daughter went to Sunday School for the first time and it did get me to thinking. One certain thought does prevail - the people of Newtonville church are indeed warm, good people.
