Metro may consider leaving dump early Following a meeting of Durham Region and Metro officials on Friday, Friday, Gary Herrema, chairman for Durham stated that Metro had agreed to get out of the Pickering landfill site earlier than original!) planned, 1990. Herrema said the> agreed to take this recommendation to Metro council where the Metro officials would support such a plan. Durham Region has called for the early retirement from the landfill site by Metro leaving the site for the sole use by Durham Region. It has been stated that if Metro discontinued discontinued the use of the Brock West 1 site leaving it for Regional use the site would service Durham for a five year period, Herrema said the move by Metro . was a step in the right direction. He also. stated that Durham officials had demanded that Metro stop any study of the N1 site in, the Courtice area as an interim dump until such time as the two public works committee committee could meet.' Metro has been investigating the use of two . interim sites which would serve both Metro and Durham; One of the sites is in the Courtice area south of 401 highway while the other would be the extension extension of the Keele Valley dump in Vaughan township. Vaughan has also told Metro no expansion of this existing landfill operation. Although Durham was apparently apparently satisfied with the meeting Metro chairman Dennis Flynn nas been reported to state that no figures or dates had been agreed upon. He also said that Metro is willing to discuss leaving Brock West early but they could not just walk away from it without knowing what they were facing altogether. Flynn said Durham had their concèrns arid Metro had theirs but we want to be co-operative. Durham Regional council on Wednesday last went on record opposing opposing the use of Courtice lands for a Metro interim dump but did not go as far as to severe relationships and working with Metro for a joint-use dump.
