The school has been open for • three weeks after sharing quarters with the elementary students of St. Stephen's at their school in south Bowmanville. ' The new school has seven classrooms, six portables along with a gym, a swimming pool, the latter to be ready in the new year. The school offers 'similar programs programs as other schools with the exception exception of shop which is, provided by the Courtice High School with busing. The Peterborough-Victoria- Northumberland and Newcastle Roman Catholic Separate School Board has taken out a five-year lease on the property from the Members In Christ Assembly. The separate high school was started in 1985 with only grade nine. Since that time one grade a year has been added. The Separate School Board now operates besides the high school four elementary schools. With a growing population in the area it is felt that a new high school could be a reality within four to five years when the student population rises to 400 to 500. * ^ a- Clarke High News by Heidi Jenkins Clarke High Update The Clarke High School band is • planning to hold several fundraisers in the time to come. The reason for these fundraisers is to raise rnoncy to help send the students in the band to England. There will be around 25-30 students going on this trip, which will be a good experience for all the students who are going. Some of the fundraisers that the b,and will be holding in the near future are: Car Watfi, Saturday October October 15th at Orono IGA parking lot; Dessert Concert, December 8th and one in April or May; Hamburger Hamburger and Hotdog day no date at this time; Band-a-thon no date at this time. And the parents who are invplved with the band will also be holding various fundraisers such as: à dance on Friday, November 18th at the Newcastle Town Hall; meat packages will be sold; and an auction. auction. Hope that everyone will support the band, to make it a successful trip. Clarke High School Student's visiting Universities and Colleges Many Clarke High School students will be taking several trips to different Universities and Colleges. Colleges. These trips are to give these students the taste of what it's going to be like, and the necessary information information needed about the schools. V ; These special clinic are being sponsored by the Toronto Academy of Veterinary Medicine and are to be held from 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. oti Saturday, October 22nd at participating participating Durham Region Veterinary Clinics. The cost is $5.00 per animal. Only cats and dogs at least 12 weeks of age are eligible and dogs must be leashed while cats must be individually boxed. Rabies Vaccination Clinics Your Best Protection In most cases where a rabid animal comes into contact with a human, the animal is the person's own unvaccinated dog or cat. Since " Southern Ontario continues to have the highest incidence of this always fatal disease in its animal populations, populations, the special Rabies Vaccination Vaccination Clinic due to be held across Durham Region later this month, presents Durham residents with a good opportunity to protect themselves and their pets from this terrible disease. Rabies is a viral disease of warmblooded warmblooded animals which can be passed passed to other animals, including man by bites, scratches or other .close contact with an infected animal's saliva. In Ontario the main animal carriers of the disease are the red fox, skunks, bats and unvaccinated domestic dogs and cats. The best protection from the disease is the rabies vaccination of pets. In addition, careful avoidance of any strangely acting animal is crucial since the main symptom of rabies is a change in an animal's usual behaviour. Wild animals Block Parent Week "National Block Parent Week" will be held from October 23rd to 29th, 1988. During this week there will be many different displays and programs programs in area schools and malls. The Block Parent Inc. is an organization which helps children if lost in a strange area. They are in need of volunteers for every school in the area including Orono and fof the central committee committee executive.. The organization is funded by the United Way and usually has one major fundraiser in the spring. Meetings are held the first Tuesday Tuesday of the month at the Court House, Room 1 at 7:30 p.m. These meetings are open to anyone who is interested in the program whether they are Block Parents now Or want to be Block Parents. f October's meeting was a special information meeting.
