Although the boys played well they ran into a hot goaltender and lost the game 8-0. On Saturday, October 22nd, Orono's Atoms, travelled to Markham and lost a close 5-4 decision. decision. Jamie Shetler scored a hat- trick while Jeff Goodmurphy pick ed up a single; assists Went to Jeff Gates, Jeff Goodmurphy and SteVe Bonneau. Orono's forwards checked checked hard all night and the defense played a very solid game. Game two of our young season was an obvious improvement over game one. The boys are starting to put things together and other teams in the league should take note. Manvers, Stouffvffle shell out to Orono Atoms The Orono Atoms "had some ghoulish tricks in store for teams from Mangers and Markham. On Tuesday, Manvers came to town and played our boys to a 5-5 draw. This was a tough loss with Orono holding a decided advantage throughout the game. 'Spinner' Wakefield scored two beautiful goals, one on a superb set-up by that artful dodger 'Bingo' Goodmurphy. Goodmurphy. 'The Silk' Shelter scored 2 very nice goals as well as working hard all night. 'Catfish' Lawrence stood out with his aggressive play. On Wednesday night the lads shook off the effect of a long car ride and tricked and treated their way to a 7-3 win over Stouffville. A word first about great checking; 'The Wedge' Weagant, 'Pepper' Peacock 'Bomber' Burnham, 'Noodles' Noble all drove Stouffville Stouffville up the boards with their superior effort and tenacity. Goals in this game were scored by 'Bingo' Goodmurphy and 'Gabby' Gates, 'the Silk' Shetler arid 'Spinner' Wakefield. The star of the game was 'Bomba' Bonneau who scored a hattrick - all three on rink long rushes. Assists went to Noodles Noble Noble (2), Silky Shetler (2), Gabby Gâtes (1), Catfish Lawrence (1) and Bingo. Rambler Ransberry and Ripper Rowe patrolled the defense in workmanlike fashion. And oh yes 'Put-Put' 'stoned' em! The boys are rolling, readers should stay tuned for the further conquests of Orono's Atoms. Alas every silver lining has a cloud. On Sunday, October 30th our lads travelled to Millbrook and were defeated 6-0. The boys put up a stout hearted effort but still had their troubles with a slick skating Millbrook Side. 'Put-Put' Perry was a 'stand-out' in net turning aside 22 shots. Wait until next game. Tri-County Novice play for win and loss Ah! Hockey season is here again, isn't it great? The Tri-County Novice open up with two road flames. First game was Saturday in bps the Second on Sunday, in Little •«Britain. The Ops game was the very first game for, Joshua Bonnetta, Ryan Schoep and Michael Morrison. The veterans with the fJovice team are Steve Wilson and Grant Esler. Kids moving up from last yam Tyke team are Amy McAllister, Steven Foster, Mike Hutton Jr., Steven Gates and Jeremy Paris, We also welcome Jamie Rjcter who played last year in Whitby. The coaches are Mike Hutton* and David Pare and trainer is Joe Gates. Orono came up on the short side of 5-1 score, but played a good game just the same. Every one played hard and tried their best which showed there will be better things to come as the season progresses. Jeremy Pare played between the pipes and made some good saves. Grant Esler scored the first goal of the season with an assist going to Michael Morrison. On Sunday, Orono came out of the blocks slowly, taking until there was 19 seconds left in the first period to score. They then scored two in the second period and three in the third for a 6-0 win. Jeremy Pare again played goal and got a well deserved shut-out. The offence was provided by Grant Esler with 2 goals and 1 assist, Steven Wilson 2 goals, Steven Foster 1 goal and 1 assist, Ryan Schoep 1 goal and 1 assist, Steven Gates 2 assists, Michael Morrison 2 assists and Amy McAllister, Mike Hutton Jr. and Jame Ricter with 1 assist each. Joshua Bonnetta played a strong game on defence not allowing Little Britain to many chances to control the puck. Good luck the rest of the year kids. OMHA Novice take to ice for '88-'89 The OMHA Novice first game was against a Whitby/Brooklin team last Friday night with the Whitby team edging the Orono team 3-2 in Orono. The visitors opening the scoring in the first period holding their lead till the third period when Orono scored their first goal by Brett Maartense unassisted, Whitby went ahead 2-1 f ijjjP ^ ï-VtHKHWi Orono retaliating, tying the score at 2-2. Scott MacDonald scored with the assists going to Ryan Winning and Brett Maartense. Whitby game, both with their third and winning goal with 2 minutes left in the game. The game involved a lot of body contact and end to end rushes by both teams. The Orono team played stronger than Friday night but still lack team work. Coach Sawyer feels in order for the team to produce 100% the boys must build up their corifidence and that they have to play as a team. It is great to see so much parent and family support. The whole team wishes Danny Buttigeg a speedy recovery on his knee injury and hopes to see him back in action real soon.
