On November 14th Clarke High School held College Day This event gave students time to participate in seeking which College and which program would best suite them. Students from other High School also attended the event at Clarke. Some of the Colleges which participated participated in the College Day were: Loyalist, Seneca, Conestago, Durham, and George Brown, just to mention a few. After a walk-around was completed completed the students went into classrooms of their choice and listened and asked questions put before the College's representatives. representatives. The Pines Report Published Pens from Ontario Visit the Pines On Wednesday, November 16th the Pines Senior Public School hosted a Young Authors Writing Workshop. Visiting the school was Canadian novelist Bill Freeman, author of many historical fiction novels, Robert Priest and George Swede, two well published poets and, Jim Betts and Murray McRae, two published playwrights. Many thanks to the Writers on Tour programme, programme, the League of Canadian Poets and the Canadian Playwrights Union for helping with some of the funding for this event. The day was planned to expose the students to professional writers and to provide a stimulus for the writing process. Students Raise Money for Local United Way Students at the Pines concluded their fundraising activities towards the United Way with a terrifying haunted house and arm wrestling tournament, organized by Iroquois house. Other fundraising events included included a Halloween dance, bake sale and Fun Fair. All of these activities activities provided students with fun filled noon hours and at the same time contributed $567.92 to a very worthwhile local cause. This figure represents a 42% increase over last year. A true Pines effort!!! Just watch out for the over-flowing food hampers in December!!! Hockey Finals In November? That's correct. The Pines House League Floor Hockey finals are in full swing. Inside sources feel it could be close! We'll keep you posted in the weeks to come as to the winners and losers in the first round of the House League competition. competition. Pines Teacher Scoops Degree Congratulations to Mrs. Gibson this month. She graduated with her Bachelor of Arts from York University on November 5th. With this "in course" study she will further further pursue a specialist's certificate in guidance. Prediction of the Week With all of the confusion over polls for the upcoming federal election election our News hounds conducted a poil of their own. Here are the results: Local candidate most likely to win: Doug Moffatt,, Liberal 54%; Ross Stephenson, P.C. 24%; Marg Wilbur, NDP 14%, Other 8%. Party most likely to win the election: Liberal 62%; PC 26% and NDP 12%. Free Trade - those in favor 10%; opposed 76%; Undecided 14%. It was an excellent experience for the students giving them an insight into the various Colleges and their program. A most helpful event. During November i6th the Pines Senior Public School held a Young Authors' Workshop. This day was organized to expose the students to professional writers and to encourage encourage students to write. All of the guests for thé morning and afternoon sessions discussed their work and the motivation to write and engaged the students in writing activities. The five professional writers taking taking part in the event were: George Swede, who is a poet, lives in Toronto and has published 32 books including 18 collections of poetry, Robert Priest, who is also a poet, born in England, now living in Canada, He has published such writings as The Ruby Hat. Bill' Freeman, an author, lives in Toronto. His work includes Danger on the Tracks and Harbour Thieves. Jim Betts, a musical theatre writer and lives in Ontario. Some of his plays, include Tonight at 8:30, 9:00 in Newfoundland and his most recent play Thin Ice. Murray McRae is a playwrite and lives in Toronto. His plays include Visiting Hour, Mens' Room, and In Search of the Snark, just to mention mention a few.
