Orono Weekly limes, Wednesday, December 7, 1988-3 Clarke Constituents ready for Round 3 in local dump fight Area residents who attended the 'Open House' held by Laidlaw Waste Mangement Systems on November 28th, to promote a proposed proposed massive expansion of their landfill site north of Newtonville, were distressed by what they saw. Dave Scott, Chairman of the Committee of Clarke Constituents, said that this third attempt at expansion expansion has been expected ever since the Region of Durham Council Council denied Laidlaw's last request for expansion in May of this year. "If Laidlaw still wants input from the public on their proposal, then they have not been listening for the past five years," s'aid Scott. Two previous attempts at expansion in 1983 and 1988 were rejected by the Town of Newcastle and the Region of Durham because the site was not considered environmentally safe for a large landfill operation. In both cases the proposed expansion expansion was vehemently opposed by area residents who have lived with the effects of the current site for the past 17 years. "This most recent proposal; is a blatant attempt by Laidlaw to cash in on the Region's garbage problems problems at our expense. This site does not have the required characteristics for a safe landfill, and it cannot be safely engineered. It doesn't matter Just George Tis the season to be merry Why is it, I wonder? That downtown Orono typify's the Christmas spirit far more sincerely than most of the big cities I have visited over the years, and I've been to a lot of them. The store windows are not as opulent, and the decorations not as extensive, but somehow they manage to portray that indefinable something, we call sincerity, a very rare commodity these days. When you enter any of these premises you can be assured of a smile of welcome that seems to come from the heart, (not the cash register). If you have the time, and inclination, inclination, take a short drive around the area after dark, the homes put on their Christmas face,: with a gorgeous display of coloured lights festooning the trees and: shrubs, I don't think I've seen the equal of this custom anywhere else. And speaking of custom, even today I still have people giving me a smile and often the usual "Hi George," although 1 sometimes can't, place them, and as we get into the season of "Goodwill Toward Men," this sincerity becomes even more extent. And so my friends, and there are apparently so many of you, who make my days brighter, who often encourage me to keep writing these short stores, (where would I be without you?) both Lynne and myse.lf (plus Princess) wish you all, the happiness you deserve, seasons greetings and best wishes for, a happy happy and safe Christmas. As usual Just George Claims birth defects may be linked to nuclear plant A study by an Oshawa based anti-nuclear group indicates a higher than average number of neonatal neonatal deaths and fatal birth defects in Pickering and the group says it could be the result of thé release of radioactivity from the Pickering plant. how many millions of dollars you pour into it, you cannot make a silk purse out of a sow's ear. If Laidlaw wants to handle all of Durham's garbage, then they bought the wrong site!", said Mr. Scott. The Committee of Clarke Constituents Constituents led the fight to stop the 1983 and 1988 expansions of thé Laidlaw Site and rallied the community in July this year to successfully protest the proposed "N3" site for Metro's garbage. Both sites are located in the former Township of Clarke. Mr. Scott sàid, "The residents of Clarke are sick and tired of being dumped on. Our community has. pulled together to preserve our environment environment before and we are prepared to do so again - and again." The Committee has retained retained legal counsel and applied to the Ministry of the Environment for "intervenor" funding. The committee committee holds regular meetings of its Steering Committee on the second Thurday of every month at the Newtonville United Church at 7:30 p.m. Additional volunteers are welcome.
