4-Orono Weekly Times, Wednesday, December 7, 1988 SPORTS *3gg0mmÊÊÈÊmmBÊÊmmÈÊmK*mÊÊ!mËMmÊÈmiÊmmHmmËM Tykes lose close match to neighbouring rivals The Orono Tykes gavé parents and fans an entertaining show this past Friday evening as they lost a close match to Newcastle. The final score of 5-2 does not do justice to Orono's play. Newcastle hit the scoreboard the first 5 minutes into the first period as Craig Harness slipped a puck past Orono's net minder Jamie Parry. Orono quickly replied as one minute later Bobby Witheridge forced His way into the Newcastle goal crease an'd fired past goalie Nicolas Stacey assisted by Andrew Beacock and Andrew Reid. This ended the first period scoring a 1-1 tie. It was another action packed second second period. There was not a lot of scoring though as both teams saw many scoring opportunities slip away, a result of excellent goaltending. goaltending. Orono's Alan Robb left the ice for tripping (Tminutes into the period and we managed to survive Newcastle's advantage (however, Alan, Andrew Beacock has a bone to pick with you over a shift he had to miss). It was not until 3 minutes from the end of the period before the first goal came as Newcastle's Mike Patrick fired a puck past Jamie. Orono came right back to even things again as Kevin Copping picked the corner to score his first goal assisted by Paul Landers and Andrew Reid. The second period closed in a 2-2 tie. Just one minute into the third period Newcastle took the lead once more as Jim Conboy fired into the Orono goal. Orono worked hard with several good scoring chances and a number of breakaways. In every case however, we were robbed either by excellent goaltending, or good back checking by Newcastle or in a few cases even by that darn 3 minute buzzer. At any rate Orono just could not buy a goal and when Newcastle's Jim Conboy scored again with just over a minute to go in" the game all hope seemed to be gone. Just to ensure the victory Newcastle's Mike Patrick scored unassisted with only 9 seconds left to play in the game. It was an enjoyable game to watch and we look forward to more games with Newcastle our neighbouring rivals. Orono, you played a very good game and everyone was working hard. A loss is easier to take when you have done your best. We will all just have to work a little harder in practices and next time "watch out"! Unfortunate week for Tri-County Novice It's been an unfortunate week for the Tri-County Novice. It started on Monday in Millbrook' with 6-1 loss. Orono played well and tried hard, but couldn't find many weaknesses in the more experienced Millbrook team. Steve Foster scored the only Orono goal assisted by Jamie Richter and Joshua Bon- netta. Steven Gates played devinely in net and" showed some talent in blocking shots with his stick. It is hoped that both the kids and coach can learn from this type of game. The next game was Friday in Oakwood. This game also ended in a loss, the score 5-0. The loss was not the fault of (he players. To start, we only had a goalie and eight , skaters which means a lot of work for everyone. This in itself is not bad for even kids this young to understand the circumstances and bare down harder and intact can have some of their best games this • way. The main problem was the ice. Ice conditions that were the worst I've ever seen. The kids would shoot the puck as hard as they cofild and it would only travel 20 or 30 feet. Stick handling was impossible because the puck would not flow smoothly, grabbing hold of the ice constantly. Ice conditions stayed that 1 way until abçut halfway through the third period when enough snow was present to help the puck slide somewhat better. Oakwood was definitely use to these problems and would flip the puck in the air when passing or shooting, building up a good size lead before Orono could adjust. I think we'll just put this game down as frustrating from start to finish and hope these conditions don't present themselves again. The third game of the week was the only home game, but the outcome outcome was the same. Cannington 2 - Orono 1. This loss was" caused by a lack of motivation. Motivations has to' be provided by the coaching staff and on this day was not. Believe me, when I say a fire will be started in the internal engines of the players come next game. Silver lining, yea we can find some silver linings. Steven Gates again played quite well in net. .Am drew Reid and Allen Rob played like they were having the time of their lives. Jamie Richter got his first goal of the year and along with Ryan Schoep played in their respective respective positions fairly well. Then somehow everyone decided to play the way we know they can. But this was in the third period and just to late. Steven Wilson got the lone assist on the Orono goal with some hustle and determination. I feel confident in saying the rest of the year will be all up hill. "Rocking" Roughleys blank Pickering 7-0 Tlie Rocking Rougleys met Pickering in a ret tint match Friday night in Orono. The Orono boys started out at a slow pace, but once they settled down and played their positions they dominated the rest of' the game, however, no matter how hard they tried, they couldn't put the puck past the Pickering's excellent excellent goaltender until the last three minutes of the second period. Or,ono scored three goals in the 2nd period and four mote in the third. The passing and skating perforated Orono OMHA Pee Wees split games Monday night last week, Millbrook came to Orono. It was the third game between the two clubs who enjoy the competition. In the first period; Millbrook scored three times. Orono's two goals of the game also came in the third period. Jason Hanson scored a beautiful goal unassisted to open qur scoring. Brandon Ovcnden, recently recruited from the Tri County team scored Orono's second goal assisted by Henry Kaldeway and Jason Mercer. The penalities were evenly split between the two teams. Each had five penalties. On Wednesday night Orono played in Newcastle. The boys love these games which are played with much enthusiasm because the boys are 'school mates. Orono won this game 5-2. Brandon Ovenden started the scoring off. His goal was assisted by Daryl Reid and Chris Yeo. Orono scored again to start off the second period. Henry Kaldeway was assisted on that goal by Stephen Shetler. Later in the second period Stephen scored assisted by Jason Hanson. Orono had two more goals in the third period. Daryl Reid scored with the help of a beautiful pass from Trevor Lomax. Michael Landers scored the final goal with some great stick handling", unassisted. The penalties were almost even, Orond had five, Newcastle 6. Chad Maartense and Jarrett Aus shared the goalkeeping in both games. They are a greàt pair! by the Orono team has greatly improved improved from their first games played. On Orono's fourth goal Danny Buttigieg made a good rush coming in on the Pickering, blue line, passed the puck to Grant Esler, where he made a great move around the Pickering defensemen, going in on the goalie, faking a shot and passing it over to Danny MacDonald MacDonald who in turn put it past the goalie in the far corner. Plays like this were one of many during the game. Orono's four defensemen played a strong game preventing the Pickering team from scoring. Goals scored in the second period: Ryan Winning with 2, Grant Esler with one, assists going to Danny MacDonald and Danny Buttigieg. Goals scored in the third period: Scott MacDonald with two, Danny MacDonald and Brett Maartense with one each. Assists going to Grant Esler, Danny Buttigieg, Buttigieg, Scott MacDonald, Devon Witheridge and Chris ;Mumby, Aaron Staples and Paul Flintoff are very good defensemen, who continue to give steady support to the team. Object to possible GO noise level An objection filed with the Ministry of the Environment about potential noise problems from the proposed GO Transit extension to Oshàwa could delay the extention of commuter rail service into the south Of the City states GO Transit chairman, Lou Parsons. Orono Atoms again on the move After coming through a tough previous week the Orono Atoms played against tough competition (his week and again showed that they are a team to be reckoned with. Three weeks ago Orono suffered a 10-2 pasting at the hands of Bowman ville. Last Tuesday night Russ Major's Mavericks skated and scuffed their way to a 1-1 tie. If a Bowmanville player expected Orono to roll over and die, he was sadly mistaken on this night, as Orono actually outskated Bowmanville. Bowmanville. Jason Lawrence bagged Orono's goal at 7:01 of the first period, but as much pressure as the boys applied they just could not put the game away. Jamie Shetler played a strong 2 way game for Orono.
