4-Ôrono Weekly Times, Wednesday, December 14, 1988 SPORTS m^mÊÊÊÊmÊÊÊÊÊÊÊmiamm^mumKÊÊÊÊimÊÊÊmÊaÊÊÊÊÊÊÊÊÊÊiÊÊÊm Orono Atoms push Millbrook squad 'Mike's Place" midgets take over top place Mr. Rolph Wakefield has often been quoted as saying^ "when the tough get going the going gets tougher." While in an odd way this statement is original, its correctness was born out on Tuesday. The Atom lads played one of the tough teams in the league this week and even though the going was tough the boys were up to it. Playing Playing without inspirational leader "catfish" Lawrence who is out for six weeks with a broken wrist Orono held a tough Millbrook team in check for most of the game but finished loosing 2-0. Even though Friday night the Little Britain Pee Wees visited Orono in the last two meetings of these teams Orono outscored them 24-0. This could account account for our boys being over confident confident for this game. The scoring opened at the 7:00 minute mark on a goal by Steve Shetler on a pass from Jason Mercer. They built their lead to 2-0 on a shot from the point by Adam Wallace. Little Britain cut the lead to 2-1 on a goal late in the period. The second started with Adam Wallace scoring an unassisted goal; his second of the evening. Less than two minutes later Little Britain again cut the lead to only one. David Crozier increased the lead for Orono on a nice passing play from Mike Schoep and Brandon Ovenden. The last goal of the period was scored by the same line, this time it was Brandon scoring on It was another exciting game this past Saturday afternoon as Orono, wearing their new sweaters compliments compliments of J M Custom Framing of Whitby, once again, hosted the Millbrook Super Tykes. This time Orono sent Millbrook home with a 3-3 tie, somewhat better than our previous 5-3 loss. It was good to see our boys working as hard as they were. This was certainly their, best effort to date as they all pulled together to come up with the tie. We haven't been too successfuf this season at getting that all important important first goal. Once again this game was no exception as two minutes into into the first period we watched Millbrook break in on goaltender Andrew Reid and fire a shot over his stick into the left corner. Both teams continued to keep the pressure on and as Orono's Greg Shetler put on over enthusiastic check on a Millbrook attacker, the referee gave him 2 minutes for body checking. This didn't slow Orono down however as half way through the period they managed to answer .Millbrook's goal with a short handed handed goal of their own. It was Bobby Witheridgc who broke through the Millbrook defense and fired on the goal, picked up his own rebound and poked the puck under the opposing opposing goaltender. Before Orono could kill off the penalty however, Millbrook's powcrplay slipped a puck into the Orono goal. This clos- this was a loss it was no disgrace, Millbrook is a tough team, well conditioned and accustomed to playing together. The whole team played well, but special mention should again be to goalie "Put-Put" Parfry who was outstanding in turning away a multitude of shots. Toni Wakefield was also outstanding in making a difficult transition from forward to defence. Again hearty congratulations are due to all involved with this rapidly improving team. a pass from Crozier. As had been the case so often this year the third period belonged to Orono. Brandon Ovenden getting his second of the game from John Btittigieg. Steve Shetler increased the lead when he lifted the puck over the goalie with a good wrist shot for his second of the night with Scott Hentig and Jason Mercer getting getting assists. John Buttigieg, who was outstanding defensively all night, helped out offensively with a goal on a hard shot from the point. Rob Jenkins scored the only goal of the third for Little Britain, pushing the puck past a sprawling Chad Puk. This was Rob's fourth marker of the game. With only a minute left Scott Hentig stripped a defenseman of the puck and scored a breakaway goal. Final score Orono 9 - Little Britain 4. , ed the first {feriod 2-1 for Millbrook. The second period gave us more ènd to end action as both teams had their chances but could not find an opening. Murphy Irvine, Bobby Witheridge and Alan Robb all made some strong rushes but just couldn't make it to the Millbrook goal. They were continuously stopped stopped short due t® fine back checking from the opposition. We got some pretty good back checking of our own from. Paul Landers, Michael Gibson, Jamie Parry and Clinton Hawkshaw. The second period score, still 2-1 for Millbrook. Again the third period was action packed. Orono's Andrew Reid played a strong game in goal preventing Millbrook from extending extending their lead. He had lots of help from his teammates with plays like Kyle Seacock's as he prevented a Millbrook breakaway by throwing himself at the puck. Unfortunately this time the play fell too and Kyle left the ice with a 2 minute body checking penalty. The Orono boys worked hard and managed to keep Millbrook from scoring during this powcrplay. It was not until past the halfway mark in the period before Orono's Alan Robb broke down the ice and perfectly picked the spot to get the puck past the opposing goalie. The assist went to Kyle , Beacock who was also giving his .'team a fine defensive game. Newcastle 4 - Stouffyille 3 On Wednesday, December 7, 1988 the Newcastle 'Mike's Place" minute later Millbrook came back to once again take the lead. This was where the true character of our boys shone through. They kept fighting back and with just under four minutes remaining Bobby Witheridge was able to get another puck past the Millbrook goaltender with help from Kevin Copping and Tyler Robinson who assisted on the play. The period closed a 3-3 tie and a very well played game by both teams. Our boys are looking stronger with each game they play. Let's keep it up! Missing from this game were Andrew Beacock and Jonathan Black away due to sickness. Hope to see you back in the line up soon boys. Next game Thursday .evening at Newcastle 5:00 p.m. Midgets travelled to Stouffville with first place on the line. Stouffville had a one point lead going into the game and the local lads new a win would take over top spot in league play. Even with Stouffville keeping the game sheet until they hit the ice for warm up giving the local lads only 0:50 to warm up or the referees calling calling 3 minor penalties to Newcastle in the last 3 minutes was going to the stop the local lads this night as they hung on with a hard fought, exciting 4-3 victory and top spot. Although the lads played excellent excellent with some great penalty killing, killing, the number one reason for the win had to go to Roger Palmer between between the pipes for Newcastle, who single handed stopped the Stouff- . ville club cold time after time, leaving leaving the Stouffville coach just shaking shaking his head in disbelief, and his players talking to themselves. to go Roger. Scoring For Newcastle were: Rob Roe, Daryl Burke, Todd Thertell and Jan Vanderheyden, with assists going to Daryl Burke (2), Mark Millson, Todd Thertell, Garrett Jones, Dwayne Foster and Rob Roe.
