Spreading the Christmas Spirit Oi oil'll I inn's, Wednesday, December 21, 1988-9 On December 14th the Orono Public School held a Christmas Party when they entertained some 34 senior citizens from the com munity. The older students served tea and cookies while being entertained by other students who sang Christmas carols and as well brightened up the room with their smiles. Resident fishing funds at work in Lindsay area Dave Maraldo, Kawartha Lakes Fisheries Biologist Walleye Spawning Area Rehabilitation Rehabilitation In 1988, Ontario Resident Sport Fishing Licence funds helped ensure the continued natural reproduction of Kawartha Lakes walleye. Presently walleye stocking is not required required in the Kawartha Lakes because of good natural reproduc-- tion. Naturally produced fish are preferred over hatchery rearer fish which are not well adapted to local conditions and are costly to raise. To increase the availability of good spawning areas for walleye in the Kawarthas, clean rock, 4-10 in- ,.ehes across is placed in suitable areas. These areas are generally along exposed shorelines in less than 3 feet of water, where Wave ac- * tion and curretns keep the material free from silt and algae. In early spring walleye deposit their eggs in these areas. Here, the eggs settle among the rocks where they are protected from predators and excessive excessive water movements. This year, six walleye spawning sites have been improved. These include include the North River flowing into Belmont Lakes, the Squaw River flowing into Little Bald Lake, Eel's Creek and Sandy Point on Pigeon Lake, and on the west shore 'of Balsam Lake near the Trent Canal. In addition, another major projfect was carried out at Omemee on the Pigeon River. A deflector island was constructed to increase the water velocity in the channel making making the area more suitable for walleye spawning. The $21,000 total cost of these projects will'provide benefits to the Kawartha Lakes walleye, and anglers for many years. Kawartha Lakes Creel Surveys Resident Sport Fishing Licence funds were used to conduct creel surveys on three Kawartha Lakes, Cameron, Canal and Sturgeon. These surveys are designed to estimate the amount of fishing occurring, occurring, the number, size and age of fish harvested, and anglers' preferred preferred species, place of origin and type of accommodation. A total of 3,100 anglers were interviewed to collect the data. Sturgeon Lake, the largest of the three, had the greatest fishing pressure i (137,275 hours) and number of walleye harvested (13,575). Walleye was the species preferred by 83% of the anglers contacted. Canal Lake provided 32,426 hours of angling and produced produced 1,53.3 walleye and 4,399 largemouth bass. Largemouth bass were preferred by 43% of Canal Lake anglers and walleye by 39%. Also harvested was a total of 343 northern pike which have only recently become established in Canal Lake. Angling effort on Cameron Lake was estimated to be 29,034 hours. Walleye harvest totalled 1,514 fish, while 1,893 smallmouth bass were kept. Walleye was the most popular species, preferred by 66% of the anglers. These surveys provide valuable information to managers on the condition of fish stocks and intensity intensity of fishing.
