OMB gives approval for BFI garbage pick-up The Town of Newcastle has received approval from the Ontario Municipal Board which now allows BFI. under contract with the Town, to proceed with the town-wide garbage garbage pick up commencing January 1989. The contract covers some 12,739 residential stops and 400 commercial/industrial commercial/industrial stops throughout the whole of the Town. For this service BFI are being paid, in 1989, a sum of $4.97 per stop per month. Tipping fees for disposal at the Brock West landfill site will be paid directly by the Town of Newcastle. Other charges will include administrative administrative costs associated with the contract and billing. The Town-wide project is to start as' of the first of the year. An annual review of charges with the contractor will be undertaken undertaken using a formula and based on figures supplied by .Statistics Canada's Consumer Price Index as ç they would relate to wages', selling price of trucks as well as operation of vehicles. The Town staff would not verify this figure but it does appear appear that the total cost could be some $114.64 plus administrative charges. Orono Times Roy, Elaine, Chris Orono wants to proceed with Woods Walk Park A request from the Orono Downtown Business Association for financial assistance and a survey of property for the proposed Woods Walk Park in Orono has been referred to the planning department and the treasury by members of council. Through a letter to council and a verbal presentation by Ann Dreslin- ski the D.B.I.A. has asked for a sum of $3000.00 for a clean-up and the establishment of trails and a possible bridge to be undertaken in 1989. The D.B.I.A. stated that $2000.00 had been raised hy the local group for this purpose to be used as well. The proposed Woods Walk Park is intended to be established on town lands lying to the west of the business section through which the Oroqo Creek flows. Ann Dreslinski stated that the undertakings for 1989 would be the enhancement of the property which would be left in a natural state. She also pointed out that it was the intent intent to plant Rhododendrons as , part of the project. She also said that a committee had been formed and that the committee represented a wide spectrum of the community and was not just representative of the Orono-D.B.I.A. A parking* lot is a consideration of the plan. It was stated that the plan was a long-term project. The Woods Walks Park has also been dealt with in the Orono Hamlet plan which now is completed. completed. An Open House is being held in the Orono Town late in January at which time the hamlet plan will be on display. At this time the general public will be able to make comment. Town supports full dump expansion hearing Council on Monday night gave support to the volunteer group of the Committee of Clarke ■ Constituents Constituents who sought petitioning of the Ministry of the Environment. David Scott, chairman of the CCC, briefly ,ran through the history of garbage dump proposals in the Newton ville area and in particular particular the expected, application from Laidlaw Waste Management Inc. for a landfill site expansion. Scott said the site was unsuitable for such an expansiori and had in fact been turned dpwn on two former occasions. He explained that _ the CCC organization was a volunteer group of some 200 members. He said this group had assembled a former petition petition of 1000 signatures opposed to any proposed dump proposal m the area. In speaking of the proposed site he said it was seriously flawed. Scott also said that the Ministry of the* Environment Ijad, in the past, noted deficiencies of a dump proposal on the chosen site. The chairman suggested that the proponent of the dump could well seek a Consolidated Hearing which would by-pass the Town of Newcas- „ (Continued page 2) Two Citations presented Helen MacDonald and Susan Elston, both deeply involved in environmental environmental concerns • relating to waste 'disposal and nuclear energy, were presented on Monday night with Citations of Merit by the Town of Newcastle. The presentation was made by Counc. Diane Hamre on behalf of the Town. Helen MacDonald gave a brief outline of' activities that both her and Susan Elston had undertaken for recycling week. Following her presentation the awards were presented for their outstanding efforts and achievements. Diane Hamre said she did not know of any other two women who had exceeded their achievements in recycling. "We owe much to you and other former volunteers who started the program in this community". Susah Elston said, "We do what we do because it has to be done." "This award," she said, "is my first Christmas present."
