4-Orono Weekly Times, Wednesday, December 21, 1988 Yppjrrs 1 1111111 1111 Orono Tykes in stage of turning things around The Orono Tykes braved the snow last Thursday evening to once more challenge their rivals the Newcastle Tykes. There was good and bad news to report on in this game. First the good news, Orono came up with their second tie game in a row as they matched a strong Newcastle club. The bad news is for the Newcastle club as they lost a star centreman late in the game due to an injury. The first period of the game saw close checking as both teams felt each other out. Strong goaltending at each end of the ice kept the score even at zero. Into the second period was more of the same as once more both goaltenders kept the opposing attackers attackers from the score Sheet and strong forechecking and backcheck- ing kept opportunities to a minimum. It was halfway through the period before Jimmy Conboy of Newcastle broke down the ice and flipped a shot over the stick of Orono goalie Andrew Reid. This was the end of the second period scoring but not by any means the excitement. Fans were treated to some fine rushes with several breakaways foiled by excellent goaltending at both ends of the ice. The third period was to be the most action packed. Orono came on the attack and found a weak stop on the Newcastle goalie as Bobby Witheridge broke down the ice and scored unassisted to even the score at one. Newcastle wasted no time in getting right back on top again as one minute later Jimmy Conboy scored his second goal of the game unassisted. Newcastle came on with a flurry as they really tested Orono's Andrew Reid in goal. Finally Newcastle's Nicholas Stacey found a hole to put them up 3-1. Shortly after this goal, about the mid point of the period, Mike's Place" Mid nix win with a loss Newcastle 5 - Bowmanville 3 Thursday, December 8th saw the Mike's Place Midgets play host to Bowmanville andcome away with a sloppy 5-3 victory. The third period saw Bowmanville outscore the local lads 3-1 to end a yawna of a game 5-3 for Newcastle. Scoring for Newcastle was Daryl Burke with his hattrick assisted by Jason Carroll. Come on guys let's start skating and staying out of the penalty box. Newcastle 2 - Millbrook 3 Thursday, December 15 saw Newcastle host Millbrook in another haekhustle performance, •iioks like the holiday celebrations have started carlv for some. The first period was a scoreless tie with both teams having numerous chances but unable to put one home. The second period saw the visitors come up with two unanswered goals to, go ahcjtd 2-0. Scoring for Millbrook were: Rob Hooton and Brian Bendall. The third period saw the local lads come up with two of their own to tie the game at 2-2, only to see it last only 0:50 seconds as Millbrook's Jason Gay put in the winner for Millbrook. Scoring the Newcastle goals were: Marty Robinson and Rick Black with assists going to Jason Carroll, Tony Burnoski and Mike Pearce. Special mention to Roger Palmer between the pipes for keeping the local lads in the game, and to the line of Rick Black, • Anthony Burnoski and Dwayne Foster for a much improved improved effort. Come on guys - games won on the ice not in the dressing room before games. At this time the coaching staff and players would like to wish everyone a Merry Christinas and a Happy New Year. "Newcastle Mike's Place Midgets" Tri-County Pee Wees with two impressive wins Newcastle's Jimmy Conboy went down just after the face off in the Orono end zone. He was in obvious pain and we later found he had broken his leg. This seemed to take a bit of wind out of the Newcastle sails and Orono, inspired by some good goaltending that had kept the game close, began to apply some pressure of their own, Orono's Michael Gibson fed into the Opponents Opponents net. This narrowed the Newcastle lead and further fuelled the Orono fire. Orono kept the pressure on but Newcastle would not give up. Orono, got some good defensive efforts from Kevin Copping, Copping, Clint Hawkshaw and Jonathan Black. Kyle Beacock was doing everything he could 'legally' get away to keep Newcastle out of our end zone. Forwards were working hard too as Jamie Parry, Andrew Beacocé, and Greg Shetler skated hard back checking and forechecking forechecking their Newcastle opponents. Finally with just two minutes to play in the game Orono's Alan Robb broke down the ice and fired unassisted into the Newcastle goal. Both teams kept the other at bay for the rest of the period to end the game a 3-3 tie. Congratualtions to Orono on à game very well played. It was the best team showing to date with a great personal effort put forth by each and every team member. To Newcastle's Jimmy Conboy we extend extend our sincere regrets and hope that you will soon be right back into the team line up. Orono, don't forget the father and son game this Friday at 6:15 p.m. and the Newcastle tournament coming up next Wednesday, December 28th. Everyone have a very Merry Christmas and boys work on those shots in your spare time over the holidays! Manvers visited Orono Friday night for what turned out to be the best hockey game of the yar. Jason Mercer converted a pass from Paul Woods to op en the scoring at the 8:00 minute mark of the first period. Scot! Hentig finished the first period scoring in the last minute of play, when he pushed the puck under the goalie in a goalie in a goalmouth scramble. John But- tigieg earned an assist on the third goal. The period ended with Orono leading 3-0, but if it wasn't for Chad Puk's exceptional goaltending goaltending it would have been a much closer game. Orono built on their lead in the second with Jason Mercer getting. his second of the game on a pass from Cameron Tomkins. Four minutes later Mike Schoep fed the puck to Stephen Shetler and Steve made no mistake, pulling the goalie and putting the puck in the open net. Manvers fought back with 3 goals in the second and only outstanding work by Chad Puk kept the game close. Each team scored twice in the third, Steven Shetler, his second and Scott Hentig completed the hattrick with Jason Mercer assisting on both goals. The final score of this game was 7-5 Orono. The star of the game was Chad Puk. He faced faced seven breakaways and made many other very good saves, especially in the first and third periods. Congratulations Chad! Saturday night Orono travelled to Lakefield with only eight players. The Lakefield team was pumped up for this game and only a good team effort allowed Orono to take a one sided victory. The first period ended with Orono leading 2-0 on goals by Steve Shetler and Jason Mercer. Orono stacked their lead to 5-0 in the second with Jason and Steven each scoring again.
