PeeWee News On December 29th, the Orono Matthews & Associates Pee Wees travelled to Douro to take part in a 12 team tournament. Orono's first game was played at 8 in the morning against one of their league rivals Millbrook. Due to thte absence of Henry Kaldeway Orono was left to play with just one extra forward and one extra defenceman. Orono came out flying in the first period and took a two goal lead by the mid-point. Both goals came off the stick of team leader Trevor Lomax, assists going to Chris Yeo with two and Daryl Reid and Mike Landers with one each. Midway through the third period, fatigue started to show on the Orono team and Millbrook took advantage to score two quick goals tying the match at 2 all. However, as they have done all year, the boys dug down deep and the extra effort resulted in the game winning goal by Trevor Lomax assisted by Jay Hansen. Trevor received a stick as Qrono's M.V.P. This victory moved moved Orono to the "A" side of the tournament. There was a five hour wait with the next game scheduled for 2 o'clock. Orono's next opponent was another league rival, Manvers. This game turfted out to be another nail biter, with no scoring until the 7 minute mark of the second period when Trevor Lomax connected assisted by Chris Yeo. At the 7 minute mark of the third period Orono widened its lead to two goals when Chris Yeo scored unassisted. With Orono tiring and struggling to maintain the shutout, Manvers managed to score a goal with 2 minutes remaining. Orono again* had to show what they were made of and they came through with flying flying colours. The final score was Orono 2 Manvers 1. Orono's M.V.P.-was Chris Yeo. This was an excellent team effort. The forwards back' checked, the defence stood their ground and the goaltending of Chad Maartense and Jarrett Aus was outstanding. After two rounds of play 3 teams remained undefeated. One was to receive a bye into the Championship Championship final. The bye would go to the team with the least penalties in its previous two games. This turned out to be Bowmanville, with Orono / facing the hometown Douro squad to decide the other finalist. Orono flew out of the gate and took a 3-1 lead in the first period. Goals were scored by Mike Landers, Trevor Lomax and Daryl Reid with assists going to Chris Yeo and Trevor Lomax. Orono upped its lead to 4-1 when Daryl Reid scored his second of the game .early in the third period. With Orono looking to be well on its way to victory, the local referees decided a shift in momentum would be beneficial to the home town Douro squad and handed Orono their penalities in the space of 1 minute. Douro took full advantage of this gift and scored 2 quick goals to cut Orono's lead to 4-3. This being being their 3rd game of a long day and playing with only 7 skaters, the Orono team was unable to overcome overcome their fatigue and frustration. Douro went on to score 4 unanswered goals in the third period to win the game 7-4. Orono's M.V.P. was Daryl Reid. The team played an excellent tournament under trying conditions and Coach Pete Landers and all the parents were justifiably proud of all the boys. The Orono O.M.H.A. Pee Wees hosted Manvers on January 2nd for their first game of the new year. This match up has turned into a strong rivalry. After three previous league meetings, Manvers held a two to one edge in games. However, Orono managed to knock Manvers out of the Douro tournament and Manvers* would be out to avenge that loss. Chris Yeo gave Orono a lead they would never relinquish midway through the first period on a perfect set up from linemate Trevor Lomax. This game was a real crowd pleaser with play going from end to end at a very fast rate. Outstanding goaltending at both ends kept the score from mounting until Chris Yeo scored his second goal of the gahje early in the second period. No further scoring took place until until the midway mark of the final period when Manvers managed to score a goal. This turned out to be the final goal of the game and Orono emerged victorious by a score of 2-1. On January 4fh, the Orono Matthews Matthews & Associates O.M.H.A. Pee Wees travélled down the 115 for a game with their arch rivals Newcastle. Newcastle. In three previous meetings between between these two teams, Orono had been victorious twice and the teams had skated to one tie. This being their final regular season meeting, Orono was looking for a sweep while Newcastle wanted revenge. Orono's chances took a turn for the worse when it was learned that Mike Landers was ill and didn't make the trip. Mike's scoring touch and aggressive play would surely be missed. The first period started with Orono having a territorial advan- J&M Custom Framing Tykes hockey update The Tykes played a lot of hockey over their Christmas holiday and came up 'B' Champs in a Newcastle tournament. Over the Christmas New Year's week they played a total of four games and gave parents and fans alike some entertaining, closely matched hockey. First there was the Newcastle tournament December 28th where we found ourselves matched with the Port Hope Tykes in the opening game. This game was a close match all the way. Orono had some fine scoring chances but the Port Hope goalie had an excellent game and was not about to be easily beaten. Orono got some good goaltending as well, Bobby Witheridge kick- ingout his share of pucks. The first period was played to a scoreless tie and it was not until halfway through the second period that Port Hope scored the games first goal. The rest of the game was a close battle as Orono put the pressure on but kept us all in suspense until with just 2 minutes left Andrew Reid fired a puck into the Port Hope goal. This ended the game a 1-1 tie and forced a sudden death over time period 'with no goalies'. Orono ended the game in a hurry however, as Alan Robb scored on a perfect shot just under 2 minutes into into overtime. In game two Orono faced their Millbrook rivals. This was truly the game of the tournament for our boys as they really gave it their all. The two teams felt each other out in the first period ending a scoreless tie. Early in the second period Orono found the net first as Bobby Witheridge scored assisted by Jonathan Black and Paul Landers. Millbrook soon answered the Orono goal and the period ended in a 1-1 tie. In the third period both teams got some golden scoring, opportunities. opportunities. Millbrook scored first at the 5 minute mark of the period. Orono's Andrew Reid played an excellent excellent game in goal, keeping Millbrook off the score board until Kyle Beacock was able to score. This was Kyle's first goal of the season with a beautiful set up in front on a perfect pass from Tyler Robinson. Also assisting on the goal was Alan Robb. This tied the game at two. Millbrook kept the pressure on however and with just over a minute to go scored the win- tage but being unable to put the puck in the net. Newcastle hit the scoreboard with the only goal of the first period. Things opened up considerably in the second period wkh a total of 8 goals being scored. Scoring for Orono were Trevor Lomax with 4, Henry Kaldeway 1 and Chris Yeo with 2. The score at the end of the second period was Orono 7, Newcastle 2. To start the third period Coach Pete Landers decided to let a couple of his defencemen have a little fun. Paul (The Flash) Flintoff and Jay Hansen moved up to forward while Trevor Lomax and Chris Yeo played defence. Orono's onslaught continued as they netted 3 more goals. Scoring for Orono in the third were Daryl Reid with 2 and Paul Flintoff with 1. Trevor Lomax led the Orono scorers with 4 goals and 2 assists. Paul Flintoff who is playing excellent hockey this year scored 1 goal and asssisted on 3 more. David Crozier added to the line up to replace Mike Landers, played an excellent two way game and the team thanks him for helping out. Aaron Staples played a very strong game on defence, while the goalies Jarrett Aus and Chad Maartense - were very solid in goal. ning goal and then to ensure the win scored another goal with only 40 seconds remaining. It was a hard fought game and our boys did very well against a strong Millbrook squad. The third game of the tournament tournament matched Orono with their 'arch' rivals, the Newcastle Tykes. Unfortunately Orono was put at a great disadvantage in this game as they had to play Millbrook and Newcastle (both very strong teams) back to back. Newcastle scored first early in the first period but our boys held them off until the middle of the secdnd when Mike Patrick scored a second and then a third goal. It was obvious at this point that our boys had burned themselves out and were now just N playing on sheer desire. It just wasn't enough to hold off a now inspired inspired Newcastle Club as Nicholas Stacey closed the second period with a goal and scored twice more in the third.
